The Friday that I had been both dreading and excited about had arrived. It was time to go to the first weekend of Woodbadge training at Camp Stearns in central Minnesota. I was dreading it because I did not know if I would know anyone in attendance other than Paul, the culprit who signed me…
I am veering away from the usual song or skit video found on the Melrose Scouting Productions Podcast to bring you something created by Eagle Scout Doug Gray. A couple years ago Doug's father, Fred, asked me for some assistance in finding some Scouting videos that his council could not find for him.
I was beginning to feel a little burned out after serving as the scoutmaster of Troop 68 for six years in the fall of 1987. I told Paul, a great Scouting friend of mine, how I was feeling about Scouting.
I think this explains one of the reasons that some of us participate in this adventure called Boy Scout (or Cub Scouting): One hundred years from now it will not matter what your bank account was, the sort of house you lived in, or the kind of car you drove; but the world may be…
Yes, you read that correctly. The Boy Scouts of America now has an official Youtube channel. As I write this, the channel has twelve videos posted, eleven "Words to Live By" videos and the "State of Scouting" video. You can even watch them in HD.
I just discovered this video on Youtube featuring behind the scenes pictures from Scout Camp: The Movie , which is being released on dvd this month. I am looking forward to seeing this movie. I think the troop will be having a movie night after I get a copy.
The rank of Eagle Scout , Boy Scouting's highest honor, is something to be taken seriously. The family, troop, and Eagle Scout will spend a lot of time planning the Eagle Court of Honor. In recent years, a video of the Eagle Scout's years as a Cub and Boy Scout has become a common part of…
The first time I visited Philmont Scout Ranch was in 1984 when I attended Scoutmaster Fundamentals Training. The training center had been built near the Villa Philmonte, Waite Phillips home. It was a wonderful example of a southern home, complete with a courtyard and swimming pool.
Disney is conducting some very special promotions this year. They have chosen people from around the country for some special recognition. I recently discovered it was my turn to receive this honor, and I AM very honored. I guess it pays to be a scoutmaster for nearly 30 years.
The sixth episode of Around The Scouting Campfire is now available. It is time to join Scoutmaster Steve and Buttons, the radical Boy Scout, for another 20 minutes of fun and reflection on Scouting. During this show we discover what advancement rank Buttons holds in Scouting as he and Scoutmaster Steve talk about his upcoming…
T his note is more for myself then anyone, but " A Scoutmaster's Blog " reached a total of 100,000 visits this morning (since the counter began in June 2007). It has been a little under four months since it reached 75,000 visits.
We have all heard of famous Eagle Scouts like Neil Armstrong, Steve Spielberg, and Ross Perot. But today's Boy Scout may have a little trouble identifying with these gentlemen. After all, they are (dare I say it?) old. How about someone younger, someone 20, 30, or 40 years closer to the age of today's Boy…
You may have read the previous three-part posting of Boy Scout Troop 68's adventure at the Central Minnesota Council's Ripley Rendezvous this year. Yes, we had a few problems, but to tell the truth, we also had a pretty good time, and that is why I have chosen to post this video to the Melrose…
Melrose Boy Scout Troop 68 held a recruitment drive in the city park last Saturday, May 9th. We had a model campsite set up, dutch oven deserts prepared, and the council's bouldering wall for the boys to climb. Seven of our nine Boy Scouts where on hand to assist.
Wow, I almost missed a couple of dates that I probably should not have forgotten. On May 18, 2006, I posted the first article to " A Scoutmaster's Blog ". It is hard to believe that it has already been three years of sharing Scouting stories (430 posts) with you.
I plan to see the new Star Trek movie this weekend. Although I am a fan of the series, I am not hardcore enough to be considered a Trekkie or a Trekker. I am more of a Star Wars kind of guy.
The new Around The Scouting Campfire audio podcast has been up and running for nearly two months, and I have to say that I am both pleased and surprised by the response to it. To tell the truth, even though I had a couple people tell me that I should create an audio podcast I…
The fifth episode of Around The Scouting Campfire has been posted. That means it is time to join Scoutmaster Steve and Buttons, the radical Boy Scout, for another 20 minutes of fun and reflection on Scouting. This show begins with Steve and Buttons talking about feedback they have received.
It looks like the Boy Scouts of America may be heading back t the Supreme Court of the USA. Occording to information found on the BSALegal.org website: Boy Scouts of America and San Diego-Imperial Council, Boy Scouts of America have filed a petition for a writ of certiorari with the Supreme Court of the United…
After supper on Saturday, the Order of the Arrow set up several "carnival" style activities to keep the Scouts busy until the evening's Call Out ceremony was scheduled to begin. Stations included activities like throwing a ball to knock down the stacked blocks, throwing a football through a hoop, and throwing darts at balloons.
Saturday morning at the Central Minnesota Council's Ripley Rendezvous started out well. The Boy Scouts awoke, got dressed, and made it to the dining hall a little early for a great breakfast of french toast, scrambled eggs, and sausage links.
This year's Central Minnesota Ripley Rendezvous proved to be challenging for me as the scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 68. It almost felt like Murphy's Law was trying to prove to me that it still applies even after nearly three decades of being with the troop.
What song is the most common song used to close a Boy Scout campfire program? I would have to say that it would be "Scout Vespers". Vespers has probably been used by Boy Scouts since the program began. It is a great song.
That is the slogan Boy Scout Troop 68 will be using during a spring recruitment drive to be held on Saturday, May 9th. The Boy Scouts, troop leadership, and committee are planning an afternoon of fun at the city park to introduce new boys and their parents to the adventure of Scouting.
During lunch today I read an article that was linked in an email to the Boy-Scout-Talk Yahoo group. It was a link to an article written by Rebecca Hagelin titled simply "Boy Scouts". Here is a small portion of the article: " Turn on the television for 30 minutes and show me how boys and men…
I have recently been guided to watch a video placed on Youtube by the Middle Tennessee Council - Boy Scouts of America. The council recently held its 17th Annual Patron Luncheon. One of the speakers at that luncheon was Eagle Scout Daniel Wakefield.
He was a small tenth grader. Many of the eighth graders were as big or bigger then he was. When he received his drivers license at 16 years old he was 5'-2" and weighed only 88 pounds. He was the weak skinny kid who would get pinned during wrestling in phy ed in less then…
The Sauk River runs through the city of Melrose, the home of Boy Scout Troop 68. This river nearly cuts the city in half. It is not very large. In fact, A teenager could through a football across most portions of the river.
It is time for the fourth episode of Around The Scouting Campfire, a podcast about Boy Scouting with a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. Scoutmaster Steve and Buttons, the radical Boy Scout, have put together a full show for you.
Last year, during one of our Boy Scout troop meetings, the whole troop ended up in the emergency room of our local hospital. Oh, don't worry. There were no serious injuries. Our theme for the month was first aid so our committee chairperson set up a tour of the hospital's emergency room and facilities.
Eymard Orth, assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 68 in Melrose Minnesota, was recently recognized by the Minnesota House for his twenty years of service to the troop. The local newspaper, the Melrose Beacon Beacon, reports: "State Rep. Paul Anderson (left), R-Starbuck, presents Eymard Orth, Melrose, with a certificate of recognition for Orth's 20 years…
I received an email from Todd at http://latterdayscout.blogspot.com asking for a few more details about our troop's breakfast fundraisers. His troop has been thinking about conducting a breakfast of their own and are looking for some tips and advice. Okay, here are a few more details.
Another Boy Scout Troop 68 spring breakfast fundraiser has come and gone. The troop has held a spring and a fall breakfast for over 20 years. The two breakfasts are the main source of income for our operating funds and individual Scout credit accounts.
It appears that there will be a new movie making its way around the country this year. It is about spending a week at a Boy Scout summer camp and is called, oddly enough, Scout Camp. From the preview it looks to have some humor and some serious moments.
Just before going to bed tonight, I decided to check a few sites online, including the "Kids and Family" section for podcasts on the iTunes Music Store. I like checking it once in awhile to see how the three podcasts I am involved with are doing.
The Bear Hunt. Through the wheat fields, over trees, through the lakes, into the cave. It is challenging. It is rowdy. And it is loud if you have a room full of Cub or Boy Scouts and their leaders. This skit has been with the Scouting program for decades, maybe even longer, and is probably…
The committee of the Boy Scout troop has recently been discussing ideas about how to get Scouting more visible in our community. The pack has had a few rough years and membership numbers are down. This in turn has hurt the troop since 80 percent or more of our membership traditionally comes from the pack.
Here it is, the third episode of the Around The Scouting Campfire podcast. There is a lot happening in this show. It begins with Scoutmaster Steve and Buttons discussing a new (fictional) video game based on the adventure of Scouting.
If you have not noticed yet, a comic strip called The Buckets is currently running a few days worth of comics about Pinewood Derby cars. The Cub Scout son does not seem to understand that he has to make a car from this block of wood he received.
It is time for the second episode of the new Scouting-themed podcast, previously known as the Melrose Scouting Audio Podcast , but starting today will be known as Around The Scouting Campfire . Unfortunately, this episode was created before the new name so it still refers to itself as the Melrose Scouting Audio Podcast.
It is time to get back into the podcast thing and post another video to the Melrose Scouting Productions Podcast. This video is once again taken from the 2007 Laughs For Lunch Show done by the Boy Scouts of Troop 68.
When you participate in a ten day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch chances are pretty good that you will see a lot of wildlife. I have seen wild turkeys, goats (or rams), deer, a bear, and plenty of chipmunks. In fact, seeing the larger wild animals can easily be one of the highlights of a…
Nearly two years ago I wrote a blog post that reprinted a list by Michael Conkey about the rules for a young man to follow if he wished to date his daughter. The list included that the young man must be an Eagle Scout, follow the Scout Law, and follow the two deep leadership rule…
It has been a long time in the making, but the first Melrose Scouting Audio Podcast (MSAP) is done and ready to be heard. This new podcast will be hosted by me, Scoutmaster Steve, and Buttons, the radical Boy Scout.
Wow. I did not realize this until today, but there are twenty videos that feature Buttons, the radical Boy Scout, so far. That is almost enough for a television season. Does that mean it is time to consider a season #2?
Have you heard about the Scouting Heritage Merit Badge yet? No? Well, that is probably because there is no such merit badge... yet. On the BSA Innovation Engine (found at http://ideas.scouting.org/ ) there are a lot of ideas thrown around for new merit badges.
I visited Philmont Scout Ranch for the first time in 1984 when I attended the Training Center for a scoutmaster fundamentals course. I quickly became familiar with a prayer known as the Philmont Grace, and have used it during the following five backpacking treks to Philmont and many troop outings.
It is that time once again. A new month begins so it is time for another ten questions from the Scout Mania trivia book. The theme this month is "General Trivia". Keep in mind, these questions are based on the 1984 Boy Scouts of America Scout Handbook, not the current handbook.
I recently went on vacation to the four Disney them parks in Florida. The family and I had a lot of fun and rode a lot of the rides. Now that I am getting back into the Scouting mode, I began thinking about how some leadership styles within packs and troops is similar to some…
Whether you like it or not, I am back! I have not posted for awhile because I have been on vacation for the last week. My parents, my brother and his family, and myself all went to Florida to visit Mickey and friends at Disney World.
