The history of HalfEagle

I registered halfeagle.com in August 2004, and the site went online in 2005. It started as a service project with one test: it had to be useful to me. I took the Scouting blogs I was already reading, put their newest posts on a single page, and linked every one back to the person who wrote it. The goal was always to send you off to their blogs, not to keep you here.

It grew. Scoutmasters, Cubmasters, commissioners, trainers and Scouts wrote about patrol method, Wood Badge tickets, Eagle projects, Jamborees and Monday-night troop meetings, and they answered each other in the comments. HalfEagle added photos, podcasts, topic pages, a Twitter bot and a UK edition along the way. Looking back, those years were one big Blogoree.

Today HalfEagle isn't a live feed anymore. It's a place to look things up: search by topic, browse by year, or follow one blogger from their first post to their last. For what's happening in Scouting now, Keep Up points you to the official channels.

About me

HalfEagle.com is a service project of Gregg Hilferding. I am an Eagle Scout, U.S. Army veteran, and Appalachian Trail thru-hiker. I served as the Scoutmaster for Troop 72 in Zephyrhills, Florida, and as the Gulf Ridge Council Advancement Chair. I've also been a Wood Badge course director and an NYLT course director. Today I volunteer at NOAC and Jamborees.

Thank you

To every blogger here: thank you. You wrote after the meeting ended, from the campsite, and between all the other things a volunteer life asks of a person, and you gave it away for free. Your posts helped other Scouters run a better patrol meeting, plan a better trip and keep going on a hard week.

Thank you to the Scouting bloggers who power this site and to the tools the original HalfEagle.com ran on:
