Troop 11 won the Punkin' Chunkin' for their class! We were 2nd overall and 1st in our class. We had a great crew of guys who put in many hours to make this a reality. The Scouts who assembled and operated the Trebuchet did a wonderful job and are to be congratulated for their hard…
Great weekend … not a cloud in the blue skies, and crisp Fall temperatures. Good fun, good fellowship, and a few merit badges thrown in for good measure . Here's the video … www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBn1y-oOb7s
I can't believe how far behind I am on my posts. It's just been too hectic to get everything done. Here's several videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTBn4WIfUuk and another www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFoIlIBso7U and finally, the last www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nZezB5zQpA
We got back about 1 PM last Saturday after a week in the mountains at Camp Shenandoah. Great camp, great staff, and a great program. We had hot days and cool nights, with thunderstorms most days. It was a productive week, with 31 merit badges completed, and several other partially finished.
march 26th was the second day of mulch deliveries for our annual fundraiser. We had a good turnout, and every worked hard and seemed to have lots of fun as well. I certainly saw a lot of Scout Spirit. It was a nasty day, with drizzle mixed with occasional snowflakes … especially since we had warmer…
We all headed to Endview Plantation on Friday evening for a weekend of camping. We had several new Scouts with us, as well as some of the more experienced Scouts. Most of the weekend was taken up with cooking, a great service project clearing an area for use as a Confederate reenactors corral, since Endview…
Today we delivered the first installment of mulch for our big annual fundraiser. The proceeds of this sale are used to replace Troop equipment and to subsidize camping and other activities throughout the year. We'll do another, bigger delivery on the 26th of March.
Our December Court of Honor and ScoutBucks Auction had to be postponed due to snow. The "Blizzard" tag is sort of tongue-in-cheek … not a lot of snow, but here in our community, 1/2-inch will stop everything. We did get around 15 inches later, but that's another story .
The 2010 Iron Chef campout at Newport News Park was a great success, in spite of the rain on Saturday night. Lots of advancement requirements were completed by the Scouts and signed off in their books. The highlight of the weekend, of course, was the cooking competition.
Troop 11's Trebuchet for the punkin chunkin at Bayport Troop 11 placed 6th in the Punkin' Chunkin' at Bayport Scout reservation on the 13th of November. They chunked their 10 pound punkin' 343 feet! Good going guys. Wish I could have been there .
Once again we set out for Maryland and another funweekend. We participated in the annual orienteering meet put on by the Baltimore Area Council, and this year we had something to celebrate! Two of our younger Scouts, Dylan and Evan, placed 7th out of ??
Again this year Troop 11 has unloaded pumpkins as their Fall service project for our Chartering Organization. Bright and early on a beautiful Saturday morning, Scouts and church members worked side by side getting the pumpkins out of a tractor trailer truck and displayed for sale.

Here's the Summer Camp video from our week at Camp Olmsted. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhFmrkzpSmM
Several of the boys got up early this morning to go to religious services. I stayed in bed to catch up on missed sleep. Had a boy last night about 11PM wake me to tell me that he felt sick.
Well, we certainly had an exciting day yesterday! We had a fast-moving thunderstorm pass through with high winds and heavy rain. Bradley and Chris were sailing in the middle of the lake at the time, and capsized. To make a long story short, they were upset (literally) and had to wait for a rescue to…
We arrived at Camp Olmsted at the Goshen Scout Reservation in the Virginia Mountains about 2 PM yesterday afternoon. Check in was uneventful, and we were treated to something we hadn't seen at home for a while … RAIN! Thunderstorms and rain off and on for most of the evening, night, and again this morning until…
Off on Friday for a 5+ hour drive to the western part of the state … to Hiwassee (near Radford and Christiansburg) for the 2010 SR7A Order of the Arrow Conclave. The weather is supposed to cooperate, so that would make for around 1000 happy Scouts and Scouters .
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjam_P5g4Z0 Well, we delivered our final 1500 bags or so of mulch this past Saturday. The turnout as not as good as we had hoped for, but all the bags were delivered to the customers by around 3 pm or so.
This year, we decided to to an "earlybird" delivery for those who wanted to get a head start on spreading mulch. We will deliver the remaining mulch on the 27th of March.
Well, we picked a great weekend . Snowed on us … not as bad as the previous weekend … just flurries this time! Before going out to deliver fliers for our annual Mulch Fundraiser, we did the Adopt-a-Spot (the road in front of our Charter Partner).
had a great lock-in at the Rock Gym in Midlothian, VA. Joe shot a couple of vids with his iphone, so I'm posting them here for your perusal .
Mayor Joe Frank of Newport News, an ardent supporter of Scouting and an Eagle Scout himself, has been awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Details can be found here http://www.dailypress.com/news/newport-news/dp-local_eaglescoutjoe_1216dec16,0,5415680.story . Well, the food was great, the Scouts received their well-deserved awards, and the bidding at the Scout Bucks auction was intense. This year, we had several tables of goodies for the Scouts to bid on. The bids came quickly and furiously, with no quarter given.
Looks like the guys really did a great job! The Troop placed 32nd out of 63 Troops. The older Scouts (First Class or above) placed 40th out of 122 teams, and the younger Scouts (not yet First Class rank) placed 26th out of 120 teams.
Bill S., our newest Eagle This evening Bill S. passed his Eagle Board of Review, which I had the honor to sit on. All of the board members were impressed with his answers, and feel that he is very deserving of the award.
Well, we got back from the northern reaches of Maryland about 11:30 this morning after a 7 am departure. Only one pit stop along the way . I am told the younger Scouts team placed 30th. That doesn't sound to good until you know that there were 190 other teams competing.
Here's an inspirational video for the 100th Anniversary of Scouting.
Well, when October comes around, we all know what time it is … PUMPKIN TIME ! This year, the church had a Fall Festival in conjunction with the unloading of the pumpkins. There were all sorts of activities for the kids, and most of the church organizations sold home-made wares in support of the mission teams.
Sorry . I posted the videos on the YouTube account but totally forgot to put the links here. Those that were clever enough to go there, saw the videos already … if you didn't, you had to wait until now . It's been hectic since I got back.
Well, another day down and closer to our return! I don't want to make it sound like I'm hoping for camp to be over … I'm not. I'm an enthusiastic camper. While the Scouts are tearing all over the forest and doing energetic things, I'm in the HQ building working on these videos and doing paperwork.
Troop 11 Summer Camp 2009 Well, another day has come and gone. The boys have gotten into their groove as far as their merit badge schedules are concerned, and most seem to be enjoying themselves. There were a few cases of homesickness among the new Scouts, being away from home and parents the first time…
Well, we got to summer camp right on schedule. We left the church ahead of the scheduled time, and had lunch in Hendersonville, NC at a Subway. We arrived at Camp Cherokee in the early afternoon, and after check in and a tour of the camp, we arrived at the campsite and got our gear…
The intrepid group of 7 scouts and 3 scouters set out early Saturday morning for an overnight hike on the C & O Canal footpath. There were dire warnings of rainstorms, but they persisted, and did get in a day of hiking.
An interesting promotional video on YouTube...
I took a day of vacation from work last Friday to attend the retirement ceremony for one of our Committee members, LCDR Dave Y. Quite impressive. Nearly 20 years in the submarine service, and now a civilian . Three of our Scouts and one Cub from Pack 122 performed a flag folding ceremony, and I was…
This past weekend was the SR-7A Order of the Arrow Conclave, where the seven lodges in the section came together at Bayport Scout Reservation in Jamaica, Virginia, for a weekend of fun, competition, and training. I arrived early Friday morning to help with registration of the 235 members of our lodge scheduled to attend.
Take the time to listen to this speech by a 19-year old Eagle Scout. This is what the Scout program has the potential to produce.
Wakeup came early on Saturday. I was up at 6:30am, getting ready for the final day of our big fundraising event … mulch delivery. Sales were up this year, with quite a few repeat customers. I arrived at the church to meet the rest of the Troop at 7:45 and we quickly got under way loading…
Last weekend, the Troop made its way to Shipman, VA, which is between Charlottesville and Lynchburg on US 29. It was sort of an introduction to basic backpacking and primitive camping for the newest members of the Troop. They backpacked in about a mile and then set up camp around a small lake.
Well, I've been busy this week. I supervised an OA election on Monday night, and I can't remember one that I was more unprepared for. I got off very late from work and had to rush to get to the Troop's meeting place in time for the election.
If only we had the weather for a Klondike Derby like this! Of course, the last time we had a decent snow for the Klondike Derby, they cancelled the event! Go figure! Dick
Wel, this weekend was the Klondike Derby at Pipsico Scout Reservation in Surrey County. Our arrival was in the hours of darkness, and after checking in and being assigned a site, we quickly set up camp. The weather was almost balmy.
Last night, I had the honor of attending Pack 11's Blue and Gold Banquet. What a great experience! It does those of us more involved with the older Scout programs a great deal of good to see the enthusiasm of the younger Tigers, Cubs, and Webelos.
We had our weekly Troop meeting tonight, and preparations for the Klondike Derby were well underway. The SPL had the Scouts out in the wind and cold making sure that the Troop equipment was in the trailer and in good condition.
It's been a while since I posted here. Several reasons, none of which are of great interest anymore. In any case, I hope to do better and keep it up a bit better than before. I just took over maintenance of the website, and am slowly updating things.
Tropical Storm/Hurricane Hannah has dealt our Oceanography Merit Badge trip with Old Dominion University and NOAA a blow … not a fatal blow, but definitely a windy blow. The trip was canceled due to the storm, and will have to be rescheduled sometime in the future.
Well, we're off to summer camp at Camp Ottari in about a week and a half. We have a dozen Scouts and four adults going, myself included. Should be a great week in the mountains and hopefully a respite from the 100+ degree heat we've been blessed with this week.
School's out and Summer's here! Traditionally, summer brings a slowing down of some Troop activities due to lower attendance with families on vacation, summer school, etc. The biggies for us this summer are Summer Camp at Camp Ottari in Southwestern Virginia and Sea Base in the Florida Keys.
