Merry Christmas everyone! Are you stuck on what to get your favorite scouter to fill his or her stocking? Here's a few ideas. The first one is a very cool item I stumbled upon this morning while picking up spices for pumpkin pie.
Its been over three years since I became an Assistant Scout Master in our troop. That entire time I have been effectively stalked to go to Wood Badge. Each time it came up, there was something always in the way; which didn't entirely disappoint me.
So the boys all got together a few weeks ago in their re-formed patrols and voted on how they wanted to be identified. We were really excited because a visiting scout, who has now since joined our troop, joined in on the fun.
When older scouts Eagle, it can leave a hole in the Troop. With a gap between older scouts and younger ones, with mixed ages in between, the troop faces some leadership challanges. Lucky for us we have two new Eagle's who have decided to become ASM's.
Tonight, our Troop Committee Chair presented a talk to the scout leaders who attended the Boy Scout Round Table on Genealogy. Unfortunately I missed it but I am eager to get the details from him. From what I hear, he presented several websites, aside from the normal ones that come to mind, so as soon…
Illustration by Jamie Givens It's this simple: sore feet and neglected shoes lead to poor performance. Climbing your best means paying attention to footwork before the rubber touches rock. Revive your footwork in three steps: get the right rock shoes, treat those shoes like your firstborn, and give your feet some TLC along the way.
If you have done any amount of geo caching at all, you are familiar with finding cache in film canisters, prescription bottles, snap top or screw lid containers, and disguised with tan, black or camo duct tape. They're in the whole at the base of the tree, dangling off the limb, or under the lamp…

Wow, where to begin. Let's start with Eagles. In the past 6 months (off the top of my head) Cameron, Corey, Tim, Sean, Dillon, Kyle, and Hunter have reached the honorable rank of Eagle Scout. We're very proud of each and every one of them and their unique methods of reaching Eagle.
Be sure to take a moment to thank your mother today for all she has done for you. She's helped to mold you into the man you are. If she was a scout leader…. Why are you here reading this?
You're only over-equipped if you never do anything
How is your scouting unit celebrating the centennial? Are you including the scouts in the celebration? I think it'd be incredible to keep a board of 100 good deeds.
Boy Scouts Of America is one of the foremost educators of camping for young boys ages 12 through 18. Even before a child is old enough to be a boy scout the organization has activities for younger boys that help them develop good camping techniques. The other organizations are known as Cub Scouts and then
In addition to track, baseball, football, and basketball, Isiah Jenkins makes time for rock climbing, hiking, and camping. This exceptional Scout, and honor roll student, from Troop 100 at Atlanta's BEST Academy also makes time to give back to his community.

FEAR & ACCOMPLISHMENT………….. It is okay to be afraid. It is not okay to let the fear hold you back from accomplishing great and wonderful things.
Members of our Crew got the scouts so interested in learning Geo Caching, and the fact camping plans for January kept getting moved around we opted for a day trip to Spring Creek Park. The Crew went out a week earlier and planted 5 caches for the scouts.
You have new friends. In Dece mber, our Venture Crew went to the Atlanta area and I had a great opportunity to introduce them to caching. The boys who went are all over this new activity. As always, the first hunt, they wonder if its like a snipe hunt, but as soon as they find…
Historical merit badges help Boy Scouts celebrate Scouting's past A merit badge called Computers would sound just a crazy to a 1910 Boy Scout as a merit badge called Tracking sounds to Scouts today. That's because the BSA's list of available merit badges has evolved through the years as the interests of boys have changed.
If you saw the Boy Scouts of America float in the Rose Parade this year, you know one thing: It was a work of art. And like any masterpiece, it shouldn't end up in a trash pile. Fortunately, after being paraded in front of the world and winning the award for "Best Depiction of Life…

Some of you may already know that Mike Wisdom passed away today, January 8, 2010, about 1:00 pm from a heart attack as a result of the cancer treatment he had started undergoing last Saturday. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend and will be greatly missed.
APPRECIATE THE JOURNEY…………… Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vintage point.
This is a great article that was run in the December 6th, 2009 edition of the Houston Chronicle. Thanks go out to Michelle, who is the proud mom of one of our Eagles, Casey, for finding this gem. After some speculation about the new 12th Edition handbook and its various versions , a helpful comment has cleared up the questions. Nathan, a BSA national scout shop employee, who has seen the "shrink wrapped" books, left a comment on the original Scouting News post .
Our newest scouts came for their first troop meeting last night. I must say that I was quite impressed with Brandon and Timothy and how quickly they warmed up to our 1st Year Emphasis leaders while all the older scouts worked away at their own rank advancements.
Last night at Spring Creek Park, very chilly by the way, at the big fire ring with a large bonfire we watched the Arrow of Light ceremony for about 6 packs and 50+ Webelos. The AOL teams did a great job.
The Boy Scouts of America is considering introducing a Boy Scout shirt made by Under Armour. Boy Scouts could wear the shirt while doing activities such as service projects, hiking, camping, and other troop activities. This shirt is made of fabric similar to other Under Armour athletic wear. https://scoutnet.scouting.org/survey/cgi-bin/qwebcorporate.dll?idx=RZKJS6
Arthur R. Eldred received the very first Eagle Scout badge on Labor Day, 1912. Twenty-three Scouts received the Eagle merit badge award in 1912. Any first-class Scout qualifying for 21 merit badges were entitled to wear the highest Scout Merit Badge, the Eagle. Back in 1912 the Eagle Award was called a merit badge.
This was the main picture on e Scouter. Sam Houston Area Council's e mail news letter. So what is so special about this pic? The Scout is in our troop rappelling off the tower at CIMA, and that is his father standing below. Not to mention I took the photo.

Fourth Boy Scout high-adventure base set to open in 2013 You've hiked through Philmont, set sail at Florida Sea Base, and paddled around Northern Tier. You've done it all, right? Not anymore. Coming in 2013 is the BSA's fourth high-adventure base, called The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve .

In Boy Scouts character is built, so maybe we need bright yellow caution signs with Character Under Construction in big bold letters on them. Character is built by guiding the boys to live by the scout oath and scout law.
We'll be headed to Enchanted Rock this weekend for some climbing and rappelling. Mother Nature looks like she'll be providing the perfect weekend, middle 70's during the day and middle 50″s at night. I'll have my favorite troop leaders there with me and a couple others that are unable to join will be missed.
Thank a Veteran today, give them a hug, shake their hand, buy them a drink. Show your appreciation for their sacrifice to our country.
Political correctness has been killing truth, and common sence. It now looks like it has killed soldiers. As of today I am declaring war on Policital Correctness! I encourage all my friends to join me in this war. When you hear or see anyone with PC speech, stop them, and demand plain truth.
What exactly do Webelos base their decision on when deciding which Boy Scout troop to join. I guess it depends. If the young scout lives in an area where there is only one troop, well I guess the decision is easy.
I'm always looking out for new way's to go lighter when backpacking, camping or just hiking, I have found something new. Colgate Wisp. A very small lightweight toothbrush with toothpaste built in with a toothpick at the other end. I take 3 to 6 these in my pack now depending on how long I'll be…
It's only a lump on a length of line, A snarl in a place of string. But properly tied, by a practised hand, It becomes such a beautiful thing. It is square. It is round. It can slip or hold fast.
Let the climbing begin! Tonight, our three climbing instructors (self included) started our course to re-certify for another two years as climbing instructors. Sadly, what was to become our fourth won't be able to join us. We'll miss him!
As always, when October rolls around, Troop 483 finds itself very busy. Each year, on one crazy Saturday, the troop splits between volunteering at the Webelos To Scout Expo and the church festival at the Christ United Church of Cypress .
We see it all the time on campouts; especially when they cover Wilderness Survival. We teach the boys to be resourceful. Be Prepared. Think things through and be ready to think on their feet. I have a bragging moment on my oldest son that made me proud to be his mom, and one of his…
Today, Troop 483's largest supporter, the Houston Cy-Fair Lions presented the 10th Annual Lions Biking for Sight Century Bike Ride. The ride began at 8 AM at the Montgomery Athletic Complex. The riders cycled through some of the most beautiful Texas landscape in Montgomery and Grimes counties.

After watching a couple of episodes of Man Versus Wild, I couldn't resist looking to see if Bear Grylls had any scouting experience. To my shock, he did, and currently holds the position of Chief Scout in Britian. Not only was he was a Cub Scout, as an older youth, he participated as a Venturer.
Our troop met with a shock a few weeks ago. We met as usual at our charter church, only to find out that it was going to be renovated… beginning in two days. It meant a couple of things to our troop.
