Every Scout's first book. Scouters reviewed each new edition of the handbook, compared it with the ones they grew up with and shared how their Scouts used it.
Last month I finally broke down and bought an iPad (the newest version). I have been having fun with it. It looks great and works well. I have to admit, playing Angry Birds on an iPad is a lot more fun then playing on an iPod Touch.
The new 2016 13th Edition of the Boy Scout Handbook should be in the hands of every new scout joining your troop this year. The new edition made what I believe to be some nice improvements, along with just a couple things not so much.
I've had my copy of the 12th Edition of the new Scout Handbook for a couple of weeks now and I recently added the Scout Handbook to my Ipod touch. I have also looked over the website bsahandbook.org . As the way we use and manipulate information changes I applaud the BSA in attempting to keep…
The ninth edition of the Boy Scout Handbook was the one I used as a scout. It holds a special place in my heart because of that. I've read that is one of the better versions, written by "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt.
I think it is important to have "Hero's" in life. People that we look up to or try to learn from chapters of their lives. William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt is one of my hero's. His love for the Scouting program drove him and in the end elevated him to a father of Scouting in…
After being excluded in all previous editions, the 13th Edition of The Boy Scout Handbook features the Japanese Mark II Square Lashing —a very good thing! Referred to simply as “The Mark II Square Lashing,” it’s included along with the other lashings in Chapter 12.
I know that many different bloggers have already written about the new 12th edition of the BOy Scout Handbook but I would like to say a few things about the handbook. First off lets take about the organization of the handbook.
So with the BSA's 100th aniversary we have a new handbook that will bring us well into the 21st century. This new handbook has alot of great information and it is a great resource that every scout and scouter should have on their bookshelves.
From an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal; Boy, the Scout Handbook Keeps Changing by Tony Woodleif ' A succinct and thoughtful evaluation of what Scouting means to a Scout and his family I suppose a handbook won't determine whether my sons have an enriching Scout experience.
Testing the Scouts BSA Handbook on my Kindle e-reader. (It works great!) Carry hundreds of pages of Scouting knowledge right in your pocket. The Scouts BSA Handbook for Boys and Scouts BSA Handbook for Girls are now available on Kindle, making it easier than ever for you or your Scouts to find essential information in…

When he wasn’t helping Sheriff Woody corral bad guys or annihilating aliens alongside Buzz Lightyear, Andy Davis was a normal kid. He went to school, helped his mom with chores — and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America.
We’re now just weeks — not months — away from the launch of Scouts BSA. In anticipation of the program’s Feb. 1 debut, Scouts BSA uniform items and the Scouts BSA Handbook for Girls have begun arriving at Scout shops and will soon be in stock at scoutshop.org .
There’s room for everyone in Scouting, especially Scouts who are blind or visually impaired. That’s why the Boy Scouts of America has released Braille versions of all four Cub Scout handbooks: Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos. Now every Cub Scout can follow each chapter of his or her Cub Scouting journey.

There's a lot to love about the 13th edition of the Boy Scout Handbook. There are the 13 things I listed here , and there are many more that didn't make my list. But one bit of feedback the BSA has heard about the Handbook is that the rank requirements section (beginning on page 438) doesn't…
A shift back to traditional Scouting was brought about in BSA’s programming, and this meant the author of the handbook’s ninth edition would need to be a Scout skill expert. Luckily, BSA had the perfect man for the job. Legendary Scouter William “Green Bar Bill” Hillcourt came out of retirement to write the ninth edition…
The eighth edition of the Boy Scout Handbook was first published in 1972, and was the handbook in publication when Distinguished Eagle Scout Gerald R. Ford became the first Eagle Scout to serve as President of the United States. This version of the handbook brought significant content changes in an effort to better serve America’s…
In its seven years of publication, the seventh edition of the Boy Scout Handbook saw several momentous days in history. Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the 26 th Amendment brought the voting age to 18, and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Neil…
Barely a week goes by that I don’t read a headline about Scouts saving lives. In fact, earlier this year I wrote this blog post highlighting just a few of the recent life-saving efforts of our Scouts: What You Learn In Scouting Could Save Lives .
The Boy Scouts of America had been going strong for 50 years when the sixth version of the Boy Scout Handbook was released, and the program was gaining speed! In the years of the handbook’s sixth edition, Scouts flocked to the fifth National Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs, the eleventh World Scout Jamboree in Greece…
A Good Turn can be as simple as holding the door for someone, or as grandiose as a national project. Scouts of the 1950s learned to make helping others a daily habit, thanks to the fifth edition of the Boy Scout Handbook .
Our study of handbooks though history brings us to the Handbook for Boys, Fourth Edition this week, as we discover Scouting in the 1940s! Similarly, to its predecessor, the fourth edition of the handbook is officially titled, The Revised Handbook for Boys, First Edition, although “First Edition” was removed in later printings.
So far, we’ve covered the “original,” first, and second editions of the Boy Scout Handbook on our journey through Scouting history. Today, the handbook’s third edition is taking the spotlight. Officially titled The Revised Handbook for Boys, First Edition, this version of the handbook is sometimes referred to as the “first modern handbook,” due to…
Last week, we shared highlights from the first two versions (“original” and “first” editions) of the Boy Scout Handbook. Today, we’ll take a look at our favorite handbook’s second edition. As you know by now, the Boy Scout Handbook’s second edition was actually the third publication of the handbook, following the original and first editions.
Judging by the tens of thousands of views, by now you’ve seen our #HandbookHack video series on YouTube , Facebook and ScoutingWire . It’s an outstanding series highlighting a few of the many ways Scouts are the ultimate life hackers — using the Boy Scout Handbook as our guide.
Earlier this year, the 13th and latest edition of a rather familiar “face” began appearing in Scout shops around the country: the Boy Scout Handbook . For 105 years — with more than 40 million copies in print — this guide to life and adventure has helped shepherd millions of boys through the ranks of Scouting, and from…
We all discover Scouting in different ways. Sometimes it’s a parent who proactively gets us involved. In other instances, it may be a friend inviting us to join. For me it was the Boy Scouts Handbook . As a young boy I came across the Handbook when I was sent to the library to read after…
We all know and love the handbook. Yours is probably worn out, tattered and always by your side. It teaches us everything from how to start a fire to how to spot a cyberbully. It helps you excel at Scouting adventures – and life.
The new 2016 13th Edition of the Boy Scout Handbook should be in the hands of every new scout joining your troop this year. The new edition made what I believe to be some nice improvements, along with just a couple things not so much.
Gosh! I do not know if you have heard or not but the Boy Scouts of America have changed the requirements for the Boy Scout advancement program. Scout is now a rank, which means there are seven ranks instead of six.
After being excluded in all previous editions, the 13th Edition of The Boy Scout Handbook features the Japanese Mark II Square Lashing —a very good thing! Referred to simply as “The Mark II Square Lashing,” it’s included along with the other lashings in Chapter 12.
#boyscouts #scouting @scouting Second in a series of infographics about the various scouting handbooks, this one deals with the Boy Scout Handbook (or Handbook for Boys depending on the era).
The ninth edition of the Boy Scout Handbook was the one I used as a scout. It holds a special place in my heart because of that. I've read that is one of the better versions, written by "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt.
Next year, your Cub Scout pack will grow in size by one cool kid. Ethan, the newest member of the Cub Scout team, will be a part of each adventure in your boys' new Cub Scout handbooks. He'll always be a year older and one rank ahead of your Cub Scout readers, meaning he'll speak…
The saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" could be used to describe some tweaks coming to the Boy Scouts program in 2016. The merit badge program has been getting stronger with the release of each new merit badge , and the trail to Eagle Scout continues to produce terrific young men.
A new edition of Boy Scout Requirements was released in mid January, 2013. Paul Wolf at the US Scouting Service Project Inc. has published his annual review of Boy Scout requirement changes, a tremendous resource and a great service to us all, thank you Paul!
Yes, a Braille version of the Boy Scout Handbook exists , but trying to find one can prove almost impossible. One of my coworkers brought a copy by last week, barely balancing the three-volume book in his hands. It was the first time I had seen it, and I was fascinated by the pages covered with…
There are several benefits to buying your son's next Cub Scout handbook or manual in the summer. Keep 'em busy and complete some requirements at the same time!
Homemade neckerchief slides are a Scouting tradition. John A. (Cubmaster of Pack 528 in Cascade Pacific Council, NW Oregon/SW Washington) sent me this idea for a Cub Scout neckerchief slide which looks like a little Cub Scout handbook. Thanks John!
Last month I finally broke down and bought an iPad (the newest version). I have been having fun with it. It looks great and works well. I have to admit, playing Angry Birds on an iPad is a lot more fun then playing on an iPod Touch.
I knew Spanish versions of the Cub Scout handbooks were online, but I didn't realize English versions were available also. Browsing around scouting.org I found these huge PDF files. These are the 2008 printings, except for Wolf which is 2006.

This was one of the funnest book reviews I think I've ever done! I always love off-the-wall books that present you with facts and figures you thought you'd never know. And when those facts are zany and trivial, it makes it that much better.
Boy Scout Handbook, 1st edition What is the third best-selling book in U.S. history? Why, it's the Boy Scout Handbook, of course! With over 37 million printed since 1911, the Boy Scout Handbook trails only The Guinness Book of World Records and Dr.
After some speculation about the new 12th Edition handbook and its various versions , a helpful comment has cleared up the questions. Nathan, a BSA national scout shop employee, who has seen the "shrink wrapped" books, left a comment on the original Scouting News post .
For the first time in history, the Boy Scout Handbook will be translated into another language. By the end of the year, the BSA plans to release a Spanish-language version of the official guide for Boy Scouts. It's the perfect time, too, as the organization approaches its 100th Anniversary celebration.
Version 1.1 of Boy Scout Handbook iPhone app now available
On Saturday, the BSA released version 1.1 of its Boy Scout Handbook iPhone app. The app, which we gave a favorable review in early September, gets even better with this update. One of only complaints we had with the original version of the app was the lack of landscape view.

I like being a part of the scouting movement because it is ever changing and evolving into a whole new program. For instance: Baden Powell never taught the original scouts about composite materials nor GPS systems but I am sure that he would have been prepared to teach a course on that.
So with the BSA's 100th aniversary we have a new handbook that will bring us well into the 21st century. This new handbook has alot of great information and it is a great resource that every scout and scouter should have on their bookshelves.
