Baden-Powell, vintage handbooks, old patches and the stories of long-ago camps. Scouting's past was a favorite subject, and collectors shared their finds.
(Many Scout rafting competitions were inspired by Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 Pacific raft expedition. This article, published in The Scout on 17 April 1952, reveals the link between the Kon-Tiki expedition and Scouting. Although Heyerdahl's theories of South American colonisation of the Pacific are generally discounted today, the expedition itself is still an inspiring story.)
I never realized where my time spent in scouting would ever take me, in fact when I was I scout, I thought that the program was just camping, merit badges, advancement, and achieving the highly coveted Eagle Scout Rank. Little did I know that later in life, when my son asked to join scouts, that…
On Monday 8th March various previously classified documents from the 1930' and 1940's were placed in the National Archive. One of these documents concerned the relationship between the Hitler Youth, Scouting and BP. Of course all the media then blew up and started implying that Scouting was hand in hand with the Nazis!
Baden-Powell was a master teacher. I don't know how much of the success of the Scouting movement was due to his instinctual charisma for training and inspiring others to catch his vision, but it certainly played an integral part. He became the world's first Scoutmaster in August of 1907.
One of the fun traditions of Scouting is patch trading. I have been acquiring patches now since about 1978. I would like to say that I have a ton of patches, but I really don't. You see, I did like most Scouts and Scouters do and did, I got a patch for going to Camporee…

I was trying to find something write about today and tried to dig up some history on the internet related to my troop as a youth. And then I stumbled upon something interesting. It shows how just about any of us can find common connections in Scouting.
On this Memorabilia Monday I would like to present four books of my collection that share a theme of Scouting History. The first book is The Boy Scouts: An American Adventure , written by Robert W. Peterson, and published in 1984.
So the last couple of weeks Scoutmaster Steve at A Scoutmaster's Blog and Bryan at Bryan on Scouting have been blogging each Monday about scouting memorabilia. So I thought I would join in on this series. Today's patches are from Conclave 2010 which our lodge hosted at Camp Russell. The theme for this conclave was Arrow…

Congratulations to Andrew Zahn, who will serve as Scout executive of the Dan Beard Council in Cincinnati, Ohio, effective February 1, 2020. Andy began his Scouting career as a district executive at the Hawkeye Area Council in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
William D. Boyce didn’t start the BSA all by himself. Sure, he was the man who signed the papers to make the Boy Scouts of America official — at exactly 11:03 a.m. on Feb. 8, 1910 . But just like the volunteers who start new BSA units every year, Boyce had plenty of help.
Congratulations to Matthew Bull, who will serve as Scout executive of the Baden-Powell Council in Binghamton, New York, effective March 1, 2019. Matthew began his career as a district executive at the Cape Fear Council in Wilmington, North Carolina. He later served as senior district executive, development director, and program director.
You’re helping a relative clean their house, and as you’re digging through an old trunk in the garage, you discover a Scout campaign hat and a merit badge sash stitched with old-style badges. Your relative doesn’t want them; you don’t want them, so what do you do?

Upon hearing the Scout motto, someone asked Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell the inevitable follow-up question. “Prepared for what?” “Why, for any old thing,” he replied. In 1907, Baden-Powell, an English soldier, devised the Scout motto: Be Prepared. He published it in Scouting for Boys in 1908.

As the museum prepares to relocate to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, the procedure for completing this requirement has changed. Effective April 1, 2017, Scouts seeking information for this requirement should send correspondence to Philmont at…
It was a time of idyllic Scouting scenes and uniforms somehow still crisp and clean after a full day of hiking. The Norman Rockwell era was so brilliantly depicted in the 51 original images he created for the official Boy Scouts annual calendar.
The Boy Scouts of America announced that it will move the National Scouting Museum to Philmont Scout Ranch in northeastern New Mexico from its current home in Irving, Texas. The relocation will take place over the next 18 months, with the museum scheduled to open at Philmont in 2018.
Mordecai Brown, Frank Chance, Johnny Evers and the rest of the World Series champion Chicago Cubs were never Boy Scouts. How do we know? Because in 1908, the year they won the World Series, the Boy Scouts of America didn't yet exist.
Unless there are extenuating circumstances keeping you from consuming any news, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ve at least heard about the Pokémon Go craze that’s sweeping the world (you can find out a little more about the game and how to stay safe while playing it in this article from Bryan on Scouting ).
21 boys boarded a boat in Poole Harbor… … they had no way of knowing they were pioneering a movement for millions of young people around the world. Several lived well into old age to vividly recount their experiences decades later.

Prologue: A couple of posts ago in the "Traditional Scouting 101" series, I talked about how true Scouting centers around outdoor expeditions and how these expeditions should always be challenging . In the next post after that, I showed step-by-step how to create Troop meetings and camping programs according to this principle.

We are innovating. I know that can be unsettling to some of you, who are concerned that we are getting away from the traditional Scouting program with initiatives like STEM Scouts and our new Cub Scout Adventure program. On the contrary, I think if our founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell , were still with us today, he…

Honestly, the original Gilwell Park in London looks no different from any other field. Sure, the grass is green, the trees towering and the air clean. But put a normal civilian here, and they won't see anything special. Wood Badgers, though, aren't normal civilians.
Chief Scout of the World: There's no cooler title around. That's what they called Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the worldwide Scout Movement and therefore one of the masterminds behind the Boy Scouts of America. B-P was also the first recipient of the Silver Buffalo Award in 1926, the highest award the BSA gives adults.
Before I get into today's post I want to thank every one for their interest in the review of Scoutbook.com. Unfortunately I was only given three free subscriptions and they went to the first three emails I received. But the response was overwhelming.

The 2013 National Jamboree is all about action, right? Well, right, as long as "action" includes patch-trading action. Just like in past jamborees, and in addition to all the high-adventure activities that will be available to you, 2013 will include classic jamboree activities that you have grown to love, including the ever-popular, vastly competitive patch-trading…
