Family Friends of Scouting

BSA Innovation Engine ·

-1 Vote On Idea To enhance the council's 2009 Family Friends of Scouting campaign we designed a family specific pledge form and envelope. The pledge form contained suggested giving amounts each connected to helping to support a Scout. Pledge forms were personalized for each family using the data from MyBSA fundraising.

Website Errors should not be such a BIG DEAL

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea BSA must improve communication between departments! This is especially important with regards to volunteer/national office/website development communications. When massive website changes occur such as the change June 1st to user id's, more should have been done to notify volunteers beforehand to prevent the overwhelming number of helpdesk requests for login assistance.

International Good Turn

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea How about the BSA or the World Scout Association partnering with Rotary International on its Polio Plus project to eradicate polio in the world? Rotary has made great progress and is working to meet a challenge grant from the Gates Foundation.

Merit Badge Requirement Updates

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea I had a leader ask me about how to know which merit badge books and their requirements are up to date and which are out of date. I told him that probably the easiest way would be to look in a current edition of the merit badge requirement book and take…

legal name vs nickname: searching

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea As with viewing multiple addresses in a search, I believe it would be beneficial to also see a Nickname for an individual. Many times a person submits their legal name for registration, but is submitted for FOS using their nickname.

Data Entry Made Easy

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea As a registrar and an FOS clerk, why when entering in to a data base program such as Scoutnet or even the new Funding program in MYBSA is it that we have to use the mouse as much as we do?

Scouting Magazine for transfer adults

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea When a leader transfers his primary registration to another unit his Scouting subscription ends because he no longer has a fully paid registration. Why deprive our hard working volunteers of this valuable resource because they have a transfer registration? Comments (0) Applications & Registration

Healthy Living

BSA Innovation Engine ·

3 Vote On Idea This is not really an innovative idea, but it seems to me that since we are stating that we are going to try to improve the fitness and health level of our employees, perhaps we should stop serving doughnuts, muffins and cakes, etc.

Merit Badges and Scoutmasters

BSA Innovation Engine ·

6 Vote On Idea I've been working on a special summer session of our normal merit badge classes here at the museum. I ran into some issues this past week with scouts wanting to take the Personal Management class that is this Saturday.

On-Line Video Lessons for Merit Badges

BSA Innovation Engine ·

-9 Vote On Idea Let's take the information that is in our merit badge books and turn them into a series of 3-5 minute lessons that boys can view when needed. It is proven that people learn better through multimedia.

Unit Facebook Pages

BSA Innovation Engine ·

8 Vote On Idea Let's provide a webinar for and encourage units to produce unit Facebook groups for their members. This will help them in communications, but more importantly, can be used as a recruitment tool. The unit can create an "event" for their fall sign-up and have all of the parents/youth invite other parents/youth…

Broken Web links

BSA Innovation Engine ·

14 Vote On Idea It sure would be nice to have a place to notify someone of all the broken web links. Comments (1) Technology

Employee, Petty Cash, Activity Reimbursement Reporting System

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea Current Environment: Expense reports were being filled out on excel worksheets by computer and some by hand. There was inevitably numerous mathematical errors and the professionals were not separately breaking out sales tax which is refundable from the state of Utah.

Volunteer Ownership of Budget/programs Restructuring

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea Given the signficant percentage of the Northern Star Council operating income that derives from foundation grants and distribution from council endowment, our budget has seen significantly reduced income that will continue on a downward trend for the next few years - as a result of the market losses in 2008.

Southern New Jersey Council creates new Vice President for Corporate Governance Position

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea In order to ensure that our board is perceived by the public and our customers as engaged, effective, and transparent; in 2009 the Southern New Jersey Council created a new position, Vice President for Corporate Governance.

PAS Find Many Years Ago

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea Not sure why PAS Find only shows the last few years of membership history for an individual, but it would be great to see ScoutNET's entire history on a person in PAS Find. Currently seems to go back to only 2005. Comments (0) Technology

Updating crucial district & council used national forms

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea Many of the forms that are used on a regualr basis by district & council volunteers that are supplied by national are not user friendly according to today's times. I.E. The Whitney M. Young national form is a fillable PDF document, but is not used very much.

ProSpeak Notification

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea Can the ProSpeak editor mass e-mail all professionals monthly when a new edition is posted online? Now that it is no longer coming in paper, I am trying to hunt it down. Now did I write down that link? Comments (0) Internal , prospeak

Sorting Online Tour Permit Information

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea I just heard from a volunteer that said she has pages of drivers and training in the tour permit program but they are not organized in any way. It would be helpful if they were alphabetically sorted instead of being sorted by order in which they were entered.

Arrow Points

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea Never understood Arrow Points. When a Cub earns all he can get, in order to display them proudly at a Pack Meeting he has to keep his uniform shirt untucked. The leaders all tell him to tuck in his shirt and then he has to hide all of his Arrow Points.

Membership cards for non-unit registrants

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea Currently if a member in a unit needs to replace a membership card, I can go into the unit, highlight their name, and print a card. Easy. If a non-unit registrant, such as a District Chairman, needs to replace his/her card, I must go into the Registration Print Que and go…

Family FOS Council Comparison

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea National and Region should be able to track the following and share it with councils monthly on MyBSA: the number of Family FOS gifts, the percentage of families giving, and what the average gift is. This info has been helpful for our council.

Passwords from Volunteers

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea I don't think it is a good security item that passwords are needed to be given to anyone from the end-user for their assistance when there is a problem, the computer security community (outside of scouting) has spent years telling users that they should never have to give out their passwords.

Monmouth Council- Generating Revenue From Council Assets

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea Monmouth Council has developed several sources of sustainable and diversified revenue through innovative use of the council's assets. In the Scout Service Center's back space, the council has partnered with Garden State Rocks, an indoor state-of-the-art rock climbing center and has a 5 year lease.

Texting

BSA Innovation Engine ·

-1 Vote On Idea How about the ablitity to send out texts to people the same way mass email is an option. More and more texting is used. Another tool to reach those that use Texting. Comments (0) Technology , communication txt

Mobile web pages for scouting.org and other bsa websites

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea As we use mobile devices to access the internet, mobile website options would be good to be able to access and view the various websites. Comments (0) Technology , mobile , internet

Boy Scouts of America Patch

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea If you look on the old uniform, there was a patch that said Boy Scouts of America. It has since been replaced with glued on letters. These letters begin to fall off after awhile. I think we should return to having the Boy Scouts of America placed on a embroidered patch…

Prospects List

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea Would it be possible to have prior year total on a prospect list? There are many times when my District Executives are looking to wrap a campaign and need a list of their unworked prospects and giving history.

Adventure Base 100 Miles and Miles of Waves

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea Unfortunately, the Adventure Base 100 traveling exhibit will not be stopping in our council. However, it will be traveling through our council twice. Our folks are disappointed about it not being able to stop here, but understand the scheduling and time constraints involved.

School Information collection

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea The Youth Membership Application asks for the School's name. I do not know of a place where this information can be manually entered into Scoutnet. Recently, one of my District Executives asked me for a breakdown of his units, by school / school distrist.

Computer Compatability with GL/AP/Personnel

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea The incompatability with Internet Explorer v. 8.0 needs to be addressed. When purchasing new computers it will be difficult to downgrade the browser to a prior version that was never installed in the first place. That puts us in the position of retaining old, outdated computers in order to maintain compatability…

Correct the Venture Oath

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea As a Venturer, I promise to do my duty to God and help strengthen America, to help others, and to seek truth, fairness, and adventure in the world. There is something odd about those last two lines.

Support for Support Staff in local councils

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea There are great resources and training put into the development, retention, and growth of our executive staff yet there is very little for local council support staff. In every local council the support staff play a key role in the success of a council.

Cell phone numbers and email addresses

BSA Innovation Engine ·

11 Vote On Idea When entering/creating a new record for a leader (or youth) there is no field to enter the cell phone number on the screen. In order to add the cell phone number you must get to the point where you can 'maintain person' and then go through the steps needed to add…

Varsity Scouting revival

BSA Innovation Engine ·

4 Vote On Idea I've noticed that there is a distinct lack of mention of Varsity program. Just here in the Ideas site alone there isn't a category for it. To my knowledge there hasn't been any recent literature or training to support it.

Training Records

BSA Innovation Engine ·

6 Vote On Idea Training Completed/Training Not Completed Reports Yes, if these reports had email addresses we could more easily contact people et cetera. In addition, this could be one way of getting email addresses into the council system without having our people manually entering in data, which consumes so much valuable time.

Merit Badges

BSA Innovation Engine ·

-3 Vote On Idea Technology series merit badges . Also, make this a whole group, like the citizenship group. Scouting Heritage Merit Badge. Studying history of our organization will develop greater meaning and appreciation for those who are interested. Comments (0) Boy Scouting

On-Line Tour Permits

BSA Innovation Engine ·

8 Vote On Idea On-line tour permits have been a welcome addition, but why are leaders able to submit their tour permits without having Youth Protection and Hazardous Weather training? We get a lot of tour permits without this information and we are left to follow-up and resolve these issues immediately, because after all tour…

Green Friday

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea There is a trend w/ companies adopting a "Green Friday" policy that would make sense for the BSA, too. For Green Friday, the company closes on selected Fridays throughout the year to conserve resources. During the designated Green Friday weeks, employees are expected to complete the week's work in four days.

Unit Roster Print Option Screen

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea There are a number of people making suggestions for things they would like to see added to the unit roster list. I on the other hand find that many times I wish it had less. With Youth Protection concerns and Identity Theft becoming such prevalent issues today, our Council has had…

National Employee Orientation

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea This is not a high priority item except for when you are the employee just hired and you have no checklist who to call to get set up correctly. A centralized tool with staff assigned for each process in place would help make sure the employee's transition is smooth.

My Incidents

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea It would be create if you could search through your incidents for the answer you got before. I look and there is no history under my incidents Comments (0) Technology

Scholarship and Public Speaking for Eagle rank

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea If we're supposed to be turning out the best of the best as Eagle Scouts, can anyone tell me why Scholarship Merit Badge and Public Speaking Merit Badges are not required for Eagle rank? Scholarship goes without saying.

Adult Recruiting Recognition/Incentive

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea I believe a lot of our issues could be solved if we teach volunteers how to identify, recruit and train other volunteers. Part of the process should include recognition/incentives (I know that we have a recruiter patch already-but the following idea goes a little further).

Print an address label or envelope

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea Often I have to print just one label or envelope for a cubmaster or scoutmaster. But, in order to do so I have to open the person's record, write down the address, open up Word, type the address, and print the label/envelope.

Roster and recharter changes

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea It's not a big deal, but I know it really confuses a unit when they see a letter other than a "Y" or a "N" under the Boys Life column on rosters and recharters. Right now there are often "I" under that column.

Cub Scout Uniform Revision

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea It would be greatly appreciated by the parents I come in contact with every day if the Cub Scout uniform was a simple T-shirt. Besides the "wear factor", meaning a T-shirt is easier to care for, the expense of the traditional uniform is getting to be beyond many folks.

Healthy Foods

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea As we all strive for a healthier lifestyle, it would like to suggest that the vending machine downstairs offers healthier selections than the ones currently offered. Some suggestions: apples, bananas, nuts, yogurt, celery sticks, carrot sticks, cheese sticks, and beef jerky.

Jersey Shore Council - Motivating Scouts with Incentives = Higher Product Sales

BSA Innovation Engine ·

10 Vote On Idea The Jersey Shore Council has completely revamped its Product Sale (Popcorn). We have motivated our sales force, our Scouts, with additional prizes based on their sales in addition to their normal, created to Sales clubs ($500 and $750) were they will get recognized with a special CSP, a voucher to be…
