I was thinking about BSA's software solutions the other day after renewing my Youth Protection and found myself asking again the same question that is always on my mind: WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET BETTER TOOLS TO HELP ADMINISTER THIS PROGRAM??
Our troop is slowly recovering from the summer camp experience we had at Steiner last week. Nineteen scouts attended and let me tell you, we all had a great time! The memories that are created by stepping out of our normal routines is absolutely priceless.
Summer Scout Camp for our troop is less than two weeks away. As the PLC works through sorting out equipment needs, meal planning and duty rosters, I'm gathering up things we can do while hanging out around camp. More specifically, stuff for lashing and whittling contests or Stick-Pull and Tug-o-war games.
This past weekend's Scout outing put me at 100 nights of camping… a count I have been tallying since I first got involved with Scouting some twelve years ago. I don't really know if this is a recognition for adults, but I did it for fun at first and then as an example once I…
My Jambo Troop is always looking for ways to help earn the funds necessary to attend the National Jamboree and our East Coast Tour next summer. That said, we were recently introduced to an opportunity called Ready, Set, Dough. This fundraiser looks pretty simple through selling gift cards – no minimum orders, no start-up fees, no…
I recently watched the movie " Courageous " and thought this final scene is an awesome message as we approach Father Day's. I hope that we as fathers, leaders and mentors take our positions of influence seriously and work hard to make a real difference in the lives of those around us.
LDS Scouters, Have you paged through this month's Ensign yet? Did you see the article about Capturing the Vision of Scouting by David Beck, Young Men General President? He makes some great points about the importance of our stewardship. He councils us to get properly trained, do hard things, be someone the boys can trust…
T-minus 400 days until our Jamboree adventure begins! While there's nothing new to report with our east coast tour plans , you might be wondering: What else can a Scout look forward to beyond the other 10 reasons to be excited about this event?
During our District Roundtable last month, one of the Staff members shared his perspective about gold fringe on the flag of the United States with a term I had never heard before: "Admiralty Law". He gave very stern instructions to remove any American flag from our units with this gold fringe, because of what he…
As I think about what makes a good scouting program really work, I see it as a Three-way effort between the Scout, his parents and his adult leaders. If these three pieces don't work together like a three-legged stool, the program really struggles.
Following my proposed strategy for working through Advancement , the next step is to have a plan for completing merit badges. Here are my ideas for helping a Scout reach Life by the time he turns 14 (or very close). This perspective is mostly focused on required MBs since everybody needs them.
I just read Brad's Blog about the study Baylor recently conducted to further illustrate the value of Scouting and its impact on society. Similar to the "Values of Americans" survey that shows a direct connection between a Boy Scout and his …
If I could suggest a strategy for working through advancement, this is what I think would be the best arrangement for an LDS scout. When a boy enters the program at age 11, he and his leaders should set the …
Need an idea for High Adventure? Here's one I wish our Varsity Scout Team or Venture Crew could do…a 13-mile hike to Rainbow Bridge via the South Trail. It starts at the old abandoned Rainbow Lodge that dates back to …
