One of the more ingenious ideas in Socuting is recognition through the advancement program. Humankind has always had some way of marking achievement through decorations of one kind or another; it seems to be a fundamental impulse. Cub Scouts have no pretence when it comes to badges.

This blog post from the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of National History is a peek into their collection of Scouting artifacts. One is this tunic dated between 1911-14, just a year into the founding of the BSA. I have a similar tunic to the one pictured but mine is probably from the mid twenties.

Seth Godin writes Type 1. You can take a class where you learn technique, facts and procedures. Type 2. Allow me a self-congratulatory moment as, with this post, the Scoutmaster Blog reaches the 1000 post mark. I started writing the blog almost five years ago (here's the first post ) as an exercise in sorting out my own thinking and in the vague hope that someone may find it useful.

Be Safe

Scoutmaster Clarke Green ·

We are Scouts, we hike, camp, climb, build fires, swim, canoe, rappel, sail, ski and take on any one of a hundred challenging activities. There will be accidents, there will be injuries. I am not an alarmist, I am not worried about being sued, I am not obsessed with fear of accident or injury.

The advice of their elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books. Oliver Wendell Holmes I take Justice Holme's thought as a simple statement of fact rather than a derisive evaluation of the vicissitudes of youth.

I have spent some memorable hours reading an advance copy of David C. Mark Twain on the Scout Law (opens in a new tab)

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) was never a boy scout but no one has ever written more poignantly about boyhood. His contrarian, cross grained and curmudgeonly persona could not completely conceal his humanitarianism. Here are some of his thoughts applied to the scout law: Trustworthy “I am different from [George] Washington; I have a higher…
