Continued... What we accidentally learned was that: 11 year-old Scouts can handle the Wilderness Survival merit badge. This was a great way to stress the importance of the 10 essentials . Wilderness Survival merit badge can be taught well and effectively as a group.

I've spent a lot of time this week working with Scouters on the Internet. That is, helping them to get it . There are so many tools available to us to help make our jobs easier, yet I bet half of all Scouters don't even use email on a regular basis.

[Flexing my Patrol Box opening muscles...ouch!] I think hibernation season is about over, and it is time to get the Patrol Box out again. In fact, we have a big Webelos Crossover this weekend, so there is a lot to do.

Ever stop to think about what your pack's "Pinewood Derby" says about your unit? I know PWD's run the gamut from non-competitive play to competition (and parent) intensive ordeals to be endured. All of them are loud, too! We didn't have a pinewood derby for the first 3 years of our pack.

Each month, the Boy Scout Roundtable has a plan to highlight the monthly themes for the following month. The idea is to give you a "leg up" on material to help your Scouts expand their horizons a bit. I wish they encouraged the units to use it more.

One of the strongest American passions is sports. Exercise, games, magazines, blogs, websites, television and more feed this driving need. And when that isn't enough, we invent sports like "professional" wrestling and roller-derby. We are also a nation growing a bit hefty about the middle.

Archery. Let's get to the point. I've just finished a very good series of novels that take place in the 14th century, following an English archer (not Robin Hood). Seems that English archers were widely feared due to their prowess with the longbow in the Hundred Years War .
This is the last weekend before Hallowe'en, and then the holiday rush begins. Our regular meeting times are on Wednesday nights, so Thanksgiving rushes our month a bit. The same thing happens in December, with Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve falling on a meeting night.

The National Catholic Committee on Scouting has created a new series of patches called Footsteps of American Saints . You do not have to be Catholic to earn them. There are different requirements for 1st to 5th grades; 6th to 12th grades; and for adults.
