As 2013 comes to a close, I'd like to take a moment to thank each of our employees and volunteers for their perseverance and hard work during one of our most exciting – and challenging – years. Together, along with our chartered organizations, we worked each day to truly demonstrate the Scout Oath and Law.
The BSA has always put a high value on people-both employees and volunteers. Our training methods have evolved to take advantage of new technologies and techniques. We are continuing to evolve to move beyond training in the traditional sense and create "learning experiences" that will prepare our employees and volunteers at every level to succeed…
In this episode, I'm discussing change, and how it affects all of us in the BSA. Just as you are forced to evaluate and improve your practices on the local level, we must do the same on the national level.
Our members have an amazing diversity of opportunity for outdoor adventure at our national high-adventure bases and local council facilities. Our new Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base at the Summit is no exception. To learn more about what is offered, go to www.summithighadventure.org . As always, please share your thoughts using the comments function.
Now that a new membership policy has been adopted, what exactly will that mean for the BSA? Specifically, what will and will not change? Above all else, every member of Scouting is expected to live up to the high standards of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, exemplify the highest level of good conduct, and…
Anticipation and emotions are high as we prepare for the membership standards vote this week. Regardless of which way the vote goes, the important question for each of us is, where will we stand after the ballots are counted? To help provide some perspective, I'd like to share a letter from Ray Capp, chairman of…
The National Council Executive Committee developed a resolution to be presented to the voting members of the National Council at its annual meeting next month. As was expected, there were a variety of opinions on just about every aspect of this topic.
We are in the listening phase of our Membership Standards Study Initiative where we are giving everyone in the Scouting family an opportunity to share what they think and feel about this issue. We are surveying or interviewing seven groups and will compile the results into a summary report to be given to our volunteer…

Two years ago, in December 2010, I introduced the BSA's six operating principles, and asked each of you to incorporate them into your daily activities. Since that time, I have witnessed countless occasions where our employees have exemplified these principles.
The BSA's National Executive Board recently approved a recommendation to use the Scout Oath and Scout Law in the Cub Scout and Venturing programs. While the changes will be phased in over the next several years, it's important that you understand the reasoning behind this effort, as well as the process we used to arrive…
In this episode, I address a few of the questions I receive about the rapidly approaching 2013 National Scout Jamboree : Will the Summit be ready by next summer? Is it too late to register? What if my council's contingent is already full?
What do we mean by being relevant? We have many organizations we serve, but I want to focus on the young people. The conversations I have with folks on this topic revolve around three broad categories: program, delivery, and marketing.
In this episode of WBtv, I find myself in an interesting situation. I had planned on interviewing the new Chief Scout Executive … Since I was chosen to fill that spot when Bob Mazzuca retires later this year, I'll spend my time in this episode discussing the reasons I wanted to be Chief, as well as…
In this episode, I introduce our new Summit group director, Dan McCarthy, and talk about the progress being made at the Summit as well as how things are shaping up for next year's National Jamboree. Don't forget to register your council's contingents as well as encourage your volunteers to join as jamboree staff members; there…

In this month's episode of WBtv, I'd like to discuss a topic that seems to be a hot-button issue for just about everyone within the BSA: technology. While it's something that we take seriously-as evidenced by our recent hiring of the first chief information officer in our history-it's also something that takes a tremendous amount…
