Campouts, cooking, backpacking and Leave No Trace. The outdoors is where Scouting happens, and these posts are full of gear lists, Dutch oven recipes and lessons learned on the trail.
Three Fires Council has a great Cub Hiking Program. It encourages packs to have a Saturday hike each month , to keep track of each boy's miles hiked , and to do recognition (such as a patch) at each hiking milestone. The suggested hikes are usually two to four miles each .
Here's a great idea from The Trainers Corner blog: A game backpack is filled with games and various items for quick game ideas. As you can see from the picture, which has some of the contents of my backpack, there's a lot of things that can be turned into games.
Hello fellow Scouters, Whether through Scouting or personal camping, dutch oven cooking is a great way to prepare meals in the outdoors. But many don't know how to get started cooking. It can be intimidating at first. If you are interested in cooking with dutch ovens, but don't know how to start, I have one…
Having a monthly campout or Saturday hike has been very good for our pack. An active outdoor program is what many families are looking for when their son signs up for Cub Scouts. But a Saturday event in December is more challenging attendance-wise because people are busy with so many other things preparing for the…
Staying with the theme of Winter Backpacking or Camping this week we are going to discuss the camp site. One of the biggest challenges in a cold weather environment is Wind. It is one thing, like rain or driving snow that you can not change.
Hello fellow Scouters, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Here's a tip I learned at our council's 2005 Pow Wow, that I wanted to pass along. One of the areas I've struggled with is games, so I took the Pow Wow class on games to help me with this area.
One of the official suggested Webelos activity badges for May is Outdoorsman . Here are the requirements for the Outdoorsman Webelos activity badge : Do two of these: 1. Present yourself to your Webelos den leader, properly dressed, as you would be for an overnight campout.
Hello fellow Scouters, This is part 3 in my take on Webelos to Scout transition, this time dealing with the patrol method of scouting. In Boy Scouts, the patrol method is used to teach the boys to work as a team, sharing responsibilities to help achieve success for the patrol.
Backpacking puts you out into the wilderness, away from the hustle and bustle of every day life.. away from cars and phones and immediate care. It is important that we enter the wilderness area with a solid foundation of camping skills.
Hello fellow Scouters, Happy Monday to you all! As I wrote on Friday, we had our Webelos Woods campout this weekend. The Boy Scouts did an excellent job of providing an experience that mixed Scouting skills and plain old fun for our Webelos.
We had our fall Pack 19 campout this weekend. I think it went very well. We stayed at Devil's Den State Park . This was our third pack overnighter, and it was our largest camping group yet . We had about 20 Cub Scout families camping with us Friday night.
Our Scouts enthusiastically take on the challenge of preparing, launching and completing a backpacking trip. As a Scoutmaster I appreciate the Patrol and skill building opportunities but the real reason we go backpacking is the sheer joy (often achieved through great effort and discomfort) of the experience.
Twenty years ago I bought a game called Scouting Mania, which is a trivia game based on Boy Scouting and camping knowledge. We used the game as an interpatrol activity for many a troop meeting. Now the trivia book is somewhat out of date, but much of it could still be used.
I received an invitation by email in August, 2007, to participate in a Scouting-related podcast called The Leader's Campfire . The subject of the podcast would be Webelos Transition, and would include five pack and troop leaders from around the country.
The training for high adventures or weekend hike-in campouts should include proper pack weight distribution skills. It makes sense to most people to pack the heaviest things in the bottom of the pack, but that isn't correct. A quick demonstration is all it takes to convince them that high and close to the hiker's back…

It is hard to believe , but next week I will head out to attend a week of summer camp for the 25th time. That includes three weeks as a Boy Scout, and 22 times as an adult leader. That does not include the five trips to Philmont Scout Ranch, the trip to the BWCA, or…
Opportunity Knocks #85 - IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!
Isn't it funny what we remember? Memories become so embedded in our lives that sometimes we forget that they may or may not be true. Sometimes what we think is absolutely true, is not. Sometimes the stories we tell around the campfire, when based on incorrect information assumed to be facts, becomes true in the…
#43-Feedback This time we talk about communication, Boy Scout Roundatalbes, fundraising, Boy Scout podcasts, Wood Badge, . The e-mail letter we discussed: Den Update ——— * We did a first cut plan for meals for the campout. * We made a secret code and passed messages to each other.
