Scouts trade with Scouts; adults trade with adults. Along with "trade one for one," "always shake hands," and "don't bring money into a deal," it's one of the central tenets of patch trading. But does that age-old rule still make sense?

I mentioned in a previous blog on the 2013 National Jamboree programming about curriculum and elective events. Since I keep running into people who are not quite clear on the difference between the two, I thought I'd return to that topic in this week's blog.

We often refer to the Summit as a high-adventure base. It is that, but to truly understand what the Summit is all about, you have to look beyond the high-adventure moniker and consider the long-range vision of the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve.

With over 20 miles of mountain biking track, including crosscountry and downhill trails of all ability levels, MTB-action is going to be popular.
We are now less than one year away from the 2013 National Jamboree and are really starting to feel the excitement building. I promised to tell you more about the 2013 National Jamboree programming in my last blog, so here goes: In previous jamborees, activities were largely centered within regional hubs. Each hub had identical activities delivered in action centers and each action center only had one degree of difficulty within each event.

Over 2,000 Scouts and Scouters participated in our recent Summit Shakedown experience. Clearly, it created a buzz as we hoped. It also accomplished our other primary objective to test certain aspects of the Summit and learn more about running program there.

The Summit Shakedown is history. It was awesome to see more than a thousand Boy Scouts and Venturers enjoying a sample of the high-adventure activities in Action Point and Adventure Valley that will be available at the 2013 National Jamboree in less than a year.
A week ago the last shakedown Scout left the Summit. Over 2,000 Scouts, Venturers, and Scouters participated. While we got off to a wet start, the weather cooperated sufficiently to enable us to complete the entire program, including mountain biking, BMX, skateboarding, canopy tours, challenge courses, whitewater rafting, and a challenging hike up to Garden…
Patrol Z reporters tried to photograph the Summit Shakedown from every angle, and many of those photos were broadcast via the Patrol Z Instagram feed . Here are just a few of the sights from Scouts' and Venturers' first experience at the Summit.
It's one thing to read about the Summit or watch some of the jaw-dropping videos from the place. It's quite another to see it for yourself. Trust me. I just got back from West Virginia for my first trip to the BSA's fourth high-adventure base.
What do you get when 1,300 Scouts, Scouters, and Venturers converge upon the Summit for the Summit Shakedown? A great event. What happens when that number becomes 50,000 next year? An epic, once-in-a-lifetime event. One of the best things that the Shakedown has shown is that there is always an activity to do that matches…

With this being our first jamboree at the Summit, even experienced jamboree staffers have many questions. This question keeps popping up, mostly from past jamboree participants and staff. The short answer is "Yes." Jamborees at the Summit will be physically demanding experiences. West Virginia is called the "Mountain State" for a reason. While there are level areas, there are also regular changes in grade as you hike from point to point…

Big congratulations and my thanks to this year's Silver Buffalo Award honorees. At last week's National Annual Meeting, 11 volunteers (nine are pictured above) earned Scouting's highest honor for adults . In doing so, they joined a prestigious list that includes Walt Disney, James E.
To call the 2013 National Jamboree a "transformative experience" is (A) putting it lightly and (B) sounds way too hokey to describe the biggest, coolest gathering you could attend in all of Scouting. But, the national jamboree IS definitely a "rite of passage" that all Scouts should experience as they go from Tenderfoot to the…

The best way to get an insider's view of the 2013 Jamboree at the Summit is to get on staff! The staff of this first-ever national jamboree at its new, permanent home in West Virginia will be history makers - they'll be setting the stage for the next hundred years of Scouting.
