Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and the Network. Posts from UK leaders and The Scout Association bring a different flavor of the same movement, with plenty to borrow for any troop.
First of all, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and Santa brought you what you asked for! Looking through the business section of Sunday's Telegraph , I saw this article (it is also in Monday's Independent ) about the revival of Bob a Job week or Scout Job week.
I'd like to wish everyone who visits my site, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Many thanks to those of you who have taken the time and effort to comment on my posts and I hope to see you all in 2011. Alternatively, please have a Merry Non-Denominational Winter Festive Period
In a year that started and ended with a big freeze, Scouts have proved that a bit of snow doesn't deter us from enjoying camp or helping others in need.
Hello Dear Reader I recently saw a comment on a scouting website asking "What do adult get from Large Scouting Activities", I immediately started to type a response along the lines They get Networking opportunities, a chance to have fun and be a kid, a chance to meet like-minded scouting adults.
As many of you will know, one of the things I'm interested in is the history of my Group. So the other week this letter in the local newspaper caught my eye. It was about the filming of the then Chief Scout's (Sir Charles Maclean) visit to Kibblestone Camp site in 1963.
Continuing my wander through our current work plans and a reminder of some Christmas messages you should have received. Don't forget to ask questions, or seek further clarification ...
Hello Dear Reader Well what to tell you about the Desert? Firstly it is not a Desert as you may think. It is not soft sand rolling dunes, the sand here is quite hard more like a beach within the tide mark.
A busy week of catch up meetings with friends and colleagues, a trip to Zurich on business, Cardiff and London for Scouting and the chance to catch up on some sleep!
Great Tower, situated in the Lake District, and Woodhouse Park, Bristol, are to join The Scout Association's National Scout Activity Centres from 1 April 2011 offering new and exciting Scouting adventures.
Today I came across a new online radio station I'd not heard of before called Red Shift Radio . It's based just up the road from me in Crewe and they have a show on Saturday lunchtime called 'Scout and About'.
Christmas is always a busy time, in Scouting as much as everywhere else. This year, my Scouting Christmas is very nearly over. My group's annual Christmas Bazaar was very successful, making over £400 – our best ever! I also found out that the Scouts are submitting bids to paint the leader's faces, and apparently I've got…
It was very sad to read today that our close neighbours, 1st Kidsgrove Scout Group , had suffered an arson attack. It seems someone had set fire to one of their outbuildings which was used to store archery and air rifle shooting equipment amongst others.
Having boasted last week that nothing keeps me awake at night, I paid the price this week! With snow and ice closing the airport in Guernsey (yes, we even had snow in Guernsey – well, 20 mm at least, which of course caused chaos), I had to resort to a sleepless night on the floor of…
Hello Dear Reader I came across this wonderful cartoon about getting young people to tuck their shirts in and I thought I would share it. NOTE: I am not getting into the debate over whether shirts should be tucked in or should not be, that is your own preference and down to your own group/Unit…
I read an article this morning about the Woodcraft Folk taking young people aged 11 / 13 (depending where you read) to the demonstrations about the proposed rises in university tuition fees. The article I read was in the Daily Telegraph (but I can't find it online – p16 of the paper though!)
Hello Dear Reader So having braved crazy driving and enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere of the souq, it was time to head to the desert to actually do some work. However I did have enough time before heading to the airport for my flight to walk down to the beach and dip my toes in the…
A lot is said today about the need for people to do stuff for their local communities. The idea being that by doing things in the community, people are giving back. Of course, Scouts (and other youth organisations to be fair) have been doing this for well over 100 years, from the traditional image of…
With the UK (and various parts of Europe as well, by all accounts) getting snow unseasonably early, the country is slowly grinding to a halt! However, should this mean that Scouting activities should stop as well? No! At the beginning of the year, it snowed quite badly, but our Scouts went ahead with the camp…
Hello Dear Reader Image by (: Kiff via Flickr We I am currently sat in my room with the Air Conditioning on trying to cool down, while I read reports on twitter and the news about how snow is falling in the UK. As I have previously mentioned I have travelled to Libya for about 3 ...
During my activity report to the Board of Trustees on Saturday, I was asked by the Treasurer, Chris, "Wayne, can I just ask what keeps you awake at night?" "Nothing" I replied, but it did set my mind wondering on the rather long train journey to Bristol on Saturday following the Board meeting……………
The 22nd South Shields (Brownsea) Scout Group were last week presented with The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, a major national award that is the equivalent of an MBE for voluntary groups.
It's that time of year again, when snow is forecast, the rain never seems to stop and the carpet becomes caked in dirt from the kids shoes when they've been out playing. Yes, you guessed it, time to start planning/organising summer camp. I have organised 5 summer camps and 100+ weekend camps, I always make ...
Not really! But if you read this article in the Sunday Telegraph , you might get that idea. Now, I was going to write a comprehensive and witty repost, but then I noticed that Chris Hawes had already written about it on his Be Prepared blog .
Take 200 excited, even if nervous, recipients of the Chief Scout Gold Award, a sports hall filled with more than 400 very proud family, friends and leaders and not even the cold and wet weather of Cheshire could dampen the atmosphere on Sunday afternoon…
Here is a short video of the campfire we had at our last Cub Camp ( see here ). This one isn't the longest one I've ever done, nor does it contain much singing as the camera's batteries ran out and I was busy taking photos! Still you get the idea – it was a very dark night!
Hello Readers of Jabbering all Day Long I've been asked to impart some advice for Members of the Movement on what the editors of Scouting are looking for when it comes to articles we publish in the magazine. I hope some of the tips I give here are useful and encourage people to offer ideas…
I recently came across this app for Android phones. It's a very simple (and free) one which shows the UK Scout Laws and Promises for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Useful, for example, for when a passing Group Scout Leader is randomly asked what the Cub Scout Law is!
Sometimes newspapers really do publish things which are just complete and utter rubbish. Just read this Telegraph article , which claims that Scouts are abandoning traditional scouting activities such as camping in favour of video games. As if! The "data" the journalist is basing this on?
Hello Dear Reader I am sorry there have been no posts so far this week, life has been a bit chaotic and continues to be. If you follow me on twitter you will know that I am travelling overseas with work at the end of the week and as such pretty much everything I had…

This year for our Remembrance Day ceremony, we did something we haven't done for quite a few years, we actually paraded from the Hall to the Church. This was something we did regularly in the past, until we stopped parading around 15 years ago.
Our hosts for the evening, Explorer Scouts Hannah Johnstone and Charlotte Reid promised the 300+ guests a great evening as we reviewed their year and presented awards to 100 young people, and nobody was disappointed, but first….
Every year, my group attend the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at Watford Town Hall. This year, it was rather wet as we stood outside the cenotaph – nigh on pouring, in fact. Which was quite annoying, since the morning had been totally dry!
