For 82 days I've wondered what the significance of this post would be as 83 is the number of both our Pack and Troop. Ironically, as far as Scouting goes, today was light. In significance it was not. I managed to find a Scout application I misplaced and a few merit badge books I also
Took care of today's Scouting business early. Went over to the Scout shop to hand in camporee registration, summer camp roster and registration and new Scout applications. While I was there I also picked up patches for PL, APL and Quartermaster and 3 Scout rank patches. I also found a map & compass (orienteering kit)
Started the day with the latest and greatest from Scout Nation; Registered Troop for District Camporee; Completed paperwork for summer camp registration; Did some Troopmaster data entry; Worked with Cubmaster to track down BSA ID#'s for Scouts who transferred in from the Pack; Wished a Happy Birthday to one of my favorite PTC Media Scoutmasters!
• Squared away all the registration paperwork needed (by Saturday) for summer camp and now have a binder of leader materials; • Mailed out a Shelterbox Scout patch; • Thanks to another Scouter got help with my geocaching app conundrum – turns out the feature is there just deviously hidden; • Discovered 2 new Scouting
Todays Scouting activities included: • Getting organized for summer camp registration. The early registration discount ends a day or two after tomorrow's troop meeting. Still hopeful we may get 1 or 2 more Scouts to go. • Researching geocaching apps for iPhone. I love the Groundspeak app but the one limitation is not being able
What can I say some days work gets in the way of Scouts and today was one of those days. With a few emails coordinated participation for Pack and Troop on annual park cleanup. That's it. That and a whole lot of work to pay the Scouting bills.
• Listened to the latest episode of the Scoutmaster podcast • Continued to work on my presentation on Shelter Box and Scouting for the upcoming trade-show • Received and started reading May/June issue of Scouting magazine, (dangerously tempted by ScottEVest discount) • Added the Outdoor Channel (the irony) to my cable subscription just so i
I'd like to say that I've been deep in meditation on the Paschal Triduum but the reality of it is that it's just been uneventful the past few days as far as Scouts. I did a little prep for on Troop Leadership Training, some window shopping on a backpack for my son, a little work
Troop meeting night. A couple of the Scouts have requested to work on the Music merit badge. One of the Scouts asked me if it would be ok for the counselor they found to come to our meeting to give an introduction. Since it was the boys requesting the activity for the meeting I was
Well it took 72 days but I finally had a day that I think was Scout free. A couple emails sent and read up on some Scout blogs (including a couple really good posts) but outside of that my contribution for today was zero. OK that was fun now back to WORK tomorrow.
fielded an email from a Scout (through his parent) about getting a blue card for another merit badge; emailed another parent about permission for scout to attend upcoming camping trips including summer camp. We've got 2 schools of parents in the troop, those who were Cub parents who are very involved as far as troop
Yesterday continued the basement clean-out which meant visits from the ghosts of scouting past, present and future. Piles of personal memorabilia, piles of "hand off to Cubmaster" and lots of ok "I can toss these to the trash." It's a pretty slow process as I don't want to mistakenly throw away a photograph or other
Today was definitely one of the few rare days that's light on Scouting. We worked outside as a family to get the yard and garden ready for summer. After that I spent a couple hours trying to purge the basement. Former Cubmaster now Scoutmaster's basement… Gee you think there was any Scout stuff to be
I'm going to be giving a presentation, manning a booth really, at our council's upcoming Tradeshow of Scouting. My planned focus was going to beoffering activities for units about evaluating different types of shelters and how they can be improvised. It's also about understanding the necessities for survival in a natural disaster and how Scout
• The Troop started working on the Hiking track in Program Resources. Heavy debate ensued as to which camp and trail to take but I'm letting the boys sort that out. • Announced that next week will be our next patrol elections. • Literally took a page from my 1938 SM handbook and played Crows
Being a Scout doesn't make you a hero, but there are a lot of who heroes who were Scouts. Kazimierz Piechowski is one of those heroes. Mr. Piechowski was a young Scout from Poland caught in the wake of Nazi hate. When the Nazis invaded…, in 1939, the scouting movement was seen by the invaders
The bulk of today's Scouting activity was working with myroadtoeagle.com. As previously mentioned this "software" (it's all web based) is in beta but it's really moving along nicely. Several times during the day I found some issues and within hours the developer(s) were able to make updates to address the issues I had. We have
Solicited for some direct advice from Council (and higher echelons I'll be surprised to hear from) on co-hosted activities between Shelter Box and BSA. Considering that BSA has a Memorandum of Understanding with Shelter Box I'm wondering what restrictions there are if any of Scouts participating in a fund-raisers where the proceeds would be donations
This morning I had the privilege of waking up in the woods. There was no urgency to wake my son so i made some coffee an sat down to read a little further in Working the Patrol Method. For as much as I live and appreciate the book I'm ashamed I haven't finished it yet.
A great day camping with my favorite Scout, my son. Fishing morning to noon. The fish were fat and happy when we left. The worms not so much. After lunch some geocaching. Logged 3 today counting a 2-part "Cache to Eagle" series. We talked about setting up some caches by us featuring recent Eagle projects
Day 59: Troop Meeting: Within our CO we tend to get moved around a lot. Being small helps us be flexible. Thursday night we actually had to set up a table in the coat room. That was a first. It helped that only 2/8 of the Scouts were there. 2 were on vacation, 2 went
? Listened to the SMM Podcast "The 50 Miler with Ken Hall." Jerry puts out a lot of informative shows but this is one of those special ones that goes in the do not delete category. A really good primer on trek planning. ? Discussed with PL (son) his plans for Patrol activities for tomorrow's
Our council has a Tradeshow of Scouting coming up. I've volunteered (awaiting response) to host a booth about Shelter Box and Scouting. Are you looking for ways to introduce your unit to Shelter Box or are working under a theme of Emergency Preparedness? Here's some resources you can use: Cub Scout Activities Boy Scout Activities
? Got to listen to 2 episodes of Clark Greene's Scoutmaster Podcast. Not sure how I fell behind but it was a nice envelope for the work day – one driving in and one driving home. Clark just recently moved the web site. Its a good collection of resources. I'll especially be keeping an eye
Today we celebrated the Eagle Court of Honor of our Troop's 7th Eagle Scout. This was my 4th opportunity to emcee. I was still nervous but it was the least nervous so far. At this point, every Scout that was still engaged in the program when my son and I joined the troop, have become
Today the Troop got to serve as the leading colors for the town recreation parade. Following the parade was the dedication of a new scoreboard in memorial of one of our towns great influencers with the youth recreation program. The Scouts stood by for the National anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Today we had 3
One of the drawbacks of having a small troop is that sometimes there aren't enough Scouts available for an event. We had 0 registrations for our April campout so next weekend it will be just my son and I camping. When it's just the two of us he asks if we can bring along a
Day 52 Continued: Troop Meeting night: Had a great guest speaker from Council to do a presentation Q/A about the Council's summer camp programs. The young Arrowman did a great job presenting and kept his cool (not the easiest of audiences). We have 3 Scouts committed so far and myself as Scoutmaster. It looks like
A couple days ago at the District Web Committee meeting the subject was the initiative by National to have a unified look and feel for Council and District websites. I was the only one there that wasn't a District or Council webmaster. One of the gentlemen there said that it often come up that units
Halfway through 100 Days of Scouting! OK so it's not 50 miles but there's day's where it certainly feels like it. Things have been slow in my Scout world the past couple days but certainly not today. Exchanged emails with Cubmaster on how to handle registering a new recruit and a transfer from another Pack;
If you're into survival, whether due to zombies or Skynet or maybe your tent just washed down the river, this is a good reference book. (Hopefully either you read it already or the book wasn't with the tent). If your a fan of advanced camp craft like building shelters and home made rucksacks you'll find
Uh oh. Despite coordination of calendar's several times a month just realized that the weekend of the District Camporee is the same weekend as a friend's wedding. My ever patient wife is giving me the option… If it weren't a District event I could have some wiggle room. Maybe fate will intervene and I won't
Since crossing over to Boy Scouts pretty much my only function with the Pack is electronically. I still maintain the Pack Website, calendar and photo gallery. I don't mind one bit as most requests I can usually handle in minutes and 90% of them by phone if needed. Yesterday I got an email about a
Troop meeting night: Presented 4 Totin' Chips, 4 Fire Safety merit badges and had 5 Scoutmaster conferences for Scout rank. One's already got a good Eagle project picked out Tried to feel them out as to who would want to go for Patrol Leader at next election. Some interesting responses.
A few weeks ago I used the "Make a Difference to One" Scoutmaster's Minute with my Scouts. Recently those words I read are coming back to me as I think about the situation in Japan. The headlines about Japan may be fading but the amount of people in need certainly is not. According to reports,
? semi-officially put my hat in for position on District Web Committee; ? uploaded the pictures from the Nobebosco Campout ? worked on the reservations for April campout; Not bad for a Monday after camping.
Haven't posted in a few days but that doesn't mean wasn't Scouting – in fact was too busy Scouting to post in detail. This weekend our Troop was camping at Camp Nobebosco. It was an amazing trip. Day 39: Arrived at camp. We were the most remote campsite available which meant several trips back and
Last meeting prep for the weekend campout. Went over checklists of what to (and not) have and then headed out to the grocery store. I had the boys split into 3 pairs and each team take care of 2 sections of the menu. it helped to speed things up and kept me from trying to
Looked up any public geocaches in proximity to this weekends campsite. >> Confirmed with the CC that he can bring the cooler to the Troop meeting tomorrow night; its the traditional grocery shopping before the campout; should be tons of fun with all the new Scouts. >> Registered the Troop for the NJ State
Sent a note to ASM to confirm he's all set to tow the trailer for this weekend's campout – all good; Printed maps and hiking trails info for campsite and backed up copies to Dropbox (offline access); Looked into renting Friday the 13th for our campout but since it's rated R and it's all young
? Answered some questions about this weekend's campout & rough checked the directions; ? Cashed in the trailstop.com gift certificate courtesy of the fine podcasters at PTC Media. If it sounds like a suckup there's a 2nd drawing for $50 at ClassB! Seriously though I'm grateful. I've gotten a lot of guidance over the past
Out of the past 34 100 Days of Scouting today was probably the least "Scouty". I kept up on the blogs and posted a few pictures to the Troop website and that was it. For the past couple days I've really been trying to dig in to Shelter Box work. There's now a permanent page
Today was the Union County St. Patrick's Day parade. The boys looked sharp and did a great job marching. I made a comment about not being able to ask for nicer weather and not a minute later got "bird-bombed." Luckily I was able to get cleaned up before march time. My wife insists it's good
ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide. Shelter Box responds instantly to natural and manmade disasters by delivering boxes of aid to those who are most in need. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent
I'd swear I stand six inches taller when I wear the Scoutmaster patch on my arm. Tonight was Troop meeting night and it was a good one. > Did the opening colors for our COs monthly meeting and introduced the Phoenix Patrol to the VFW. Everyone seemed pleased to see the next generation of the
