One hundred days of doing something for Scouting, and writing about each one. Scouters took the challenge for the centennial in 2010 and came back for second and third rounds.
Sorry to disappear for several days there, but I’ve been incommunicado. I wasn’t abandoning my 100 Days of Scouting efforts, I was immersed in a totally new (to me) Scouting environment: Girl Scout encampments. I’ve stopped counting how many bag nights I’ve had camping as a Scout leader since getting back into the movement in…
Day 8 Tonight is our meeting night. I have a Bear den as part of my weekly hour...followed by our troop meeting...another hour...and change each week. Before the den meeting a mom called me aside to discuss her son's behavior.
Left for Camp Cullom on Day 46 (Friday) at 5pm. We had 83 Scouts in tow with about 25 Adults to drive and some stayed. We got there with no problems and set up camp. What a great surprise it was when the 1st Year patrols (3 of them) set up their sites with the…
I have been wondering about my legacy as a Cubmaster. I haven't been in the role of CM for almost 4 years…yes, I am an Assistant CM now, but it's really not the same. When I came in as CM, I implemented a lot of different programs….summer camp, ISAs (individual scout accounts), more engaging pack…
So while I prepared yesterday, I ended up writing my thoughts and it evolved into my scoutmaster's vision statement. It will take a while but I hope to get the Scouts to come up with their own vision of our success.
I am beginning to panic. Just a little. Boy Scout Troop 68, along with Cub Scout Pack 68 of Melrose, are planning to hold a Scouting Open House on Monday, April 18th. That is only a little over a week away!
100 is a powerful number. 100 years of Scouting. 100% is everything. 100 degrees is hot weather, no matter where you are. On the 100th Anniversary of Scouting, I started a new blog: 100 Days of Scouting . The purpose is to record the positive things I do for Scouting each day--big or small.
Days 4, 5, and 6 were eventful and plenty of good Scouting Moments... Unfortunately I have not taken the time, till now to sit down and jot down the thoughts... well I am going to claim that time and space was the reason.
Day 10 We have waited for this weekend for a very long time. Four and a half years, to be precise. A brand new troop of three Boy Scouts, all former Lone Scouts, and two Webelos Scouts who were about to make the jump to the troop began what is still our best project: backpacking…
Today I: Continued to line up folks to run “booths” at our May Program Planning Roundtable Added Scouting in Winchester to the list of 100 Days of Scouting blogs to the right (welcome Charles ) Was asked to join our District “Key 3” meeting next week.
Day 13 Just wanted to share this logo for the Catholic Committee on Scouting. Today was a down day, recovering from an unpleasant stomach bug. Managed to finally get a lot of drafts finalized and posted, so I hope you are enjoying them.
Day 12 ...and then it was my turn. Everyone seems be recovering from a 24 hour stomach bug, so they can help me like I helped them. Today's Scouting will consist of reading email and trying not to share the illness outside of my home. A Scout is courteous...
Day 11 Those reading these posts know that yesterday was a tough day. My fellow Scouts are to finish our great trip, while I am home tending to the sick. At 7AM, my son, the Life Scout, comes up the stairs quite unexpectedly.

Day 9 Just take your eye off of the ball for a little while, and what happens? A granny knot instead a square knot. I'm kind of exhausted after last night , and keep replaying it in my head. Scouting became a big struggle for me after the 100 Days ended last spring.
Day 7 If this picture looks a little familiar, it is the same as yesterday's but back when the pool was still full of water, and the world was a lot more black-and-white. Not a lot of Scouting today. I cleared a lot of Scouting stuff off of my desk, and got all of the…
Day 6 Spoke with one of our Eagle Scout candidates. This almost 18 year-old was one of my original Cub Scouts that we began the pack with 8 years ago. He was a Lone Scout for 2 years while we built up enough Webelos Scouts to get a troop started.
Day 5 Love the jacket on this book. My wife is ill with pneumonia, and I spent the day quietly reading about Scouting trends and updating my pack and troop on odds and ends while watching over her. Recommended to our pack that we pull together a more robust camping plan.
Day 4 Spent today doing some investing of time into our pack and troop. Sent out the list of requirements to the den leaders and den chiefs for the Den Chief Service Award . I think most of them have either earned it or are really close.
Day 3 brings fruit already. Welding merit badge announcement yesterday to our troop resulted in a merit badge counselor and two Scouts eager to get started. I have to admit, I'm surprised. Welding doesn't really appeal to me, so I have a hard time projecting enthusiasm.
Day 2 of this year's 100 Days of Scouting brings news. First, it quit snowing yesterday as soon as I sent out the notices that we would cancel our meetings. I wish I could say it was the first time that had happened!
Today is the anniversary of the beginning of Scouting in the United States. Each of the past two years ( 2010 and 2011 ), I've marked this day with beginning a series of 100 daily posts, each noting the large and small ways I commit to Scouting.
And that's a wrap… In a couple of senses… First, the 100 Days blog…it's over for me, not blogging, but blogging everyday for 100 Days. I will try to post regularly, but for now, I will be scaling it back.
Finally! To be honest this was not as fun the 2nd time around for me. I had gotten into a nice schedule with my blog and it felt very rushed to post every day for 100 days...which I truly did not (missed a few there).
OK, so almost everyone else has finished up their #100 Days, but I started late, so I will finish a couple days after everyone else. Today, the #ScoutNationFitClub morphed into the #100DaysStrong…not that it matters, but it seems that some scouters from Twitter-land have decided that Dunlops should no longer be a part of the…
Safety Merit Badge First, my thanks to @ScouterAdam and @SM_Phil for declaring yesterday @Scoutsigns Day! Now if I'd just finished on time for my own "holiday"! Please take a minute to post comments about what you plan on doing with your newly found success in finishing up the 100 Days of Scouting this year.
The end of the 2011 "100 Days Of Scouting" has arrived. This is the second year of the blogging event, but the first year for me. Twenty four blogs participated this year, including Scoutsigns , the originator of 100 Days of Scouting.
One more day!!!! Day 99 was supposed to be a Scout Nation Record day. I have been so busy that I had to postpone it. Luckily Scoutmaster Shawn (my Co-Host) and I work so well together that we will not miss the posting date next Friday of the new Podcast.
Rowing Merit Badge One day to go. Hard to believe. Last year, 100 days seemed to last near an eternity. Then, waiting 265 more days to begin made me question if I could even do it again. Perseverance. Now my 2nd 100 Days of Scouting is rapidly coming to a close--although delayed by one day…
Last night was the Troop Meeting. It went very well. However a little dry as it was part two of our Gun Safety skills demo and we had NRA Trained Adults teaching. Last week was a little better as it had adults and Scouts demonstrating how to hold a gun, range commands and stuff like…
Today marks the last day of the second 100 days of Scouting blog campaign. But as I thought about it, I remembered back to what my good friend Mike Walton who at the beginning of the #100daysofscouting blog campaign wrote about the first one.
I got to looking more into JTE, the Journey To Excellence. I am sure that I am the last one in the world who doesn't really know what this is, but I decided that it's time for me to figure it out, if not at least investigate it a bit more so that I can…
The Troop 68 committee met tonight. The troop's two newest Boy Scouts attended for their Tenderfoot board of reviews. They were very excited. In fact, they arrived before the committee did. The committee holds board of reviews at the beginning of their meeting.
Not a lot of motivation today…I don't know why. Sonia is actually off, but for the most part, non-productive, non-scouting day. I perused some scouting information, and looked at the PowerPoints for this weekends training, and I would imagine that I should do a little more to prepare myself for the training.
Robotics Merit Badge OK, not quite the day I had planned, which means it is a Scouting day! I'm feeling some pressure about closing the 100 Days of Scouting out on a good note, but I seem to be falling behind in everything.
I usually get a bit irritated when only three of the ten members of the troop show up for a troop meeting, but tonight it worked out very well. It was a true boy run meeting. The boys in attendance were the assistant senior patrol leader and the two newest boys.
Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Some days you cannot win for losing. Two steps forward, three back. Fortunately, tomorrow is a new day...and even the rain won't matter. Today I: Spoke to a new family at church that has a boy old enough to be a Tiger...and they are interested.
Another weekend offline...life is keeping me busy! Thursday: - submitted Advancement Report for several Life Scouts getting ready for Eagle - talked with Outdoor Chair about June Campout...need to get with SPL about possible issues Friday: - looked over Script for one Eagle Court of Honor this weekend.
Reptile and Amphibian Study Merit Badge Who's afraid of a little rain? Not us! We survived our Fun with Son Cub Scout weekend! A lot of wet, but no worse for the wear. Drying out shall commence...in time for a Scout meeting tonight...and then some much deserved sleep...and a warm shower.
Service to others is a part of the scouting program, but I finding more chances outside of scouting. Last night, I did some service for my charter organization. Well, it's the troop's CO, but I am also a member of the Moose Lodge, and one of it's officers.
Reading Merit Badge Today we are camping, and I'm enjoying a rainy day with my Wolf. Archery, BB shooting, camp food, outhouses, and I suspect an indoor campfire ceremony tonight. Great times, with my youngest son. This is what Scouting is all about. I'm wearing my Dad hat today instead of my Leader hat(s).
Railroading Merit Badge Countdown continues on the 2nd 100 Day of Scouting. Hard to believe it will be over before you know it. I'm already thinking about next year, and I'm open to any ideas for improvements you might have, so leave me a comment with your thoughts.
Not much to report today... Attended the Troop Committee Meeting. Was a great meeting, talked about Summer Camp, finances and some upcoming fundraisers. The PLC will have much to do these next few months :) The meeting after the meeting lasted longer than usual.
Pulp and Paper Merit Badge Wow, only a week left! Day 93! Getting ready for my meetings tonight and tomorrow night. We are winding down our Wolf meetings, and the big crossover into the next den level is only 2 weeks away.
Troop meeting night. Great job by all! We covered gun safety for the up coming campout. I did 2SMCs and one for Eagle. Two scouts had BoRs and I handed out one 1st Class badgeand signed one Eagle App and 1 Eagle Project workbook.
Public Speaking Merit Badge I confess, I took advantage of a quiet day today. My folks are in town, visiting to see my new grandchild. Beautiful weather has the garden calling. Scouting is everywhere, and more to take advantage of there, too!
T minus 10... -Talked with a Life Scout helping him with his Eagle Project...'discussed' the project and I think it is pretty good. Now he has to develop the plan, fill out the workbook and get the signatures for approval.
Less than 10 to go. As before, the #100Days process has me wondering what's next. 100 days of anything could be a major step in my life – if I was passionate about it. 100 Days of Reading…. 100 Days of Fitness… 100 Days of Family…. Today I: picked up the District Eagle recognition certificates
Now I can't hardly wait…the first of the communiques from the Wood Badge Staff…nothing major, but it's the first of many letters that I will be getting leading up to Wood Badge. The letter outlines what needs to be done, primarily needing a physical and sending contact information, along with the times and simple "ground…
Public Health Merit Badge Back from a long and hectic weekend. My daughter is officially a college graduate, and starts on her Masters in a couple of weeks. Came home to a bunch of Scouting email and gardening chores to get done.
Another few days of Internet silence. So sorry! It was a busy weekend for everything. There were 2 Eagle Projects this weekend. One Scout cleaned and repaired a Food Pantry. He did a fantastic job and had several Scouts and volunteers help him out.
Not a lot in the way of actual scouting happened, but I did put my entire archives of True North here on the blog. It should make it a bit easier to listen to all the shows right from here.
Pottery Merit Badge Still traveling due to my daughter's graduation from college. Only Scouting today was speaking to my sister-in-law about my nephew, who has dropped out of the Boy Scouts after working all the way up from Tigers as a Cub Scout.
Well, the 100 Days Blog will be done on the 20th of May…it's been a goal of mine to blog more often and I can say that with certainty, I have. I started to do daily posts, but then started to fall short.
Plumbing Merit Badge Attending my daughter's graduation today, so not much Scouting to report. I did get to speak with my Life though, who finished up a day of training for his summer camp job.
Plant Science Merit Badge Today is a crazy day. Work is busy, I'm supposed to leave early to head down to my daughter's college graduation tomorrow, and still Scouting duties are there. What a great life. Today I: Followed-up on my Life's transportation for summer camp staff training this weekend.
Printed off some information on the location chosen by the troop for june campout. It's a bit of a haul as far as driving distance (especially with current gas prices) but I gave them the choice so now let's see if we can make it work. Mailed out a couple of shelter box scout patches.
Pioneering Merit Badge Thursday is always the calm after the storm. Wednesdays meeting night is a flurry of activity, getting from one meeting to the next, preparations, setting up, tearing down...whew! Thursday is the day for catching your breath...all while Scouting!
Oh the week is winding down... Wednesday was a great service project. The Troop worked with a local Homeless Organization and put up 1800 Cut outs of boys and girl representing the 1,800 children that will be homeless in the city of Indianapolis this year.
