One hundred days of doing something for Scouting, and writing about each one. Scouters took the challenge for the centennial in 2010 and came back for second and third rounds.
• heard from a father that he had dates confused and son would like to go on next weekends campout. The irony is that last meeting I ha a discussion with the scout on why he should still take part in the planning even if he couldn't attend. • got my next series of time
Photography Merit Badge Today is the best day of the week! Sun is shining, birds are singing, and Scout meetings are in the works. We are coming into the end of our Cub Scouting year, so I'm working hard on wrapping things up and planning a great crossover ceremony for the last pack meeting.
The PLC Meeting is the most important meeting of the month...it is the planning for the Troop that happens here! We've had a little issue with noise during the meetings and the PLC is taking some steps to make sure we follow the 'see one show one' method of Signs Up :) It is great to…
Well, I am just going to post when I can…too many thoughts running through my mind to put them into words and post them here. I have been a pretty hearty blogger at times, other times, not so much…and the task of doing the 100 Days has kept me a bit more on task.
Pets Merit Badge Do you ever get frustrated because other people in your life don't live by the Scout Oath and Law? Today was that day at work. Frustrating to work with people who lack a little accountability...and courtesy. Maybe we should add it as a new Eagle merit badge?
It is PLC Prep day... Looking at the month, getting together the agenda and putting on there the issues the PLC needs/wants to address... Yours In Scouting Bryan Permalink | Leave a comment »
Personal Management Merit Badge Pretty hectic day today, getting caught back up with life after the convention. The news was pretty interesting, too. Wow, finally. Today I: Cleaned more Scouting stuff out of the shed. Scheduled time to meet with a Scout about Citizenship in the Nation merit badge.
Personal Fitness Merit Badge Last day of the 111th Virginia State Knights of Columbus Convention. I was surprised by two positive mentions of Scouting while I was there...and this morning's session did not disappoint either! The State Deputy had a strong encouragement for the Knights to consider Scouting units if they didn't sponsor one already.
Painting Merit Badge Scouting happens in the strangest places and ways. I'm at the 111th Virginia Knights of Columbus State Convention, and Scouting keeps popping up. The Knights of Columbus have encouraged Scouting, sponsoring a unit as early as 1913.
I have had plenty of stuff going on this week, just really couldn't put things into words. Frustration with your surroundings has a tendency to do that to you. I have been out of work since January 1st, but I am getting calls about positions…just not offers or start dates.
Orienteering Merit Badge Today begins the 111th Virginia State Convention for the Knights of Columbus. I'm pulling duty here for our council. I tell the Scouts that the Knights are like the Boy Scouts, but for the old guys and no camping.
Started the day with the latest and greatest from Scout Nation; Registered Troop for District Camporee; Completed paperwork for summer camp registration; Did some Troopmaster data entry; Worked with Cubmaster to track down BSA ID#'s for Scouts who transferred in from the Pack; Wished a Happy Birthday to one of my favorite PTC Media Scoutmasters!
The Lion's Volunteer Dinner Eymard, my assistant scoutmaster, and I attended the Lions Club's annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner held Wednesday night at the American Legion. The dinner of roast beef, gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, cookies, and milk was much better then what I would have made myself.
Oceanography Merit Badge Wow, huge storms last night! After I posted my 100 Days of Scouting yesterday, we shifted into a tornado watch and flash flood warning. So, I made the call to cancel our meetings at the last minute.
Recording Scout Nation episode 4 was a blast last night. While the podcast itself is only an hour we talk for about 2-3...a nice recharge of the Scouting Batteries. I worked the 4am-1pm shift so I was able to get in some office work when I got home.
How does Tuesday get here so fast! Tonight was a strange one in that I had A LOT to do with the meeting. It was the Summer Camp presentation. A quickie for the Scouts with me and the SPL and then they are off to their meeting and then I stay behind with the CC…
The Eagle in The Newspaper I was looking forward to receiving this week's Melrose Beacon, our local weekly newspaper. An article about Dakota, our newest Eagle Scout, was included in it. I was curious as to were it would appear in the paper.
Nuclear Science Merit Badge Well, by now you know what Wednesday is--meeting day! Today started off with a final check for awards due at the Pack Meeting tonight. There is usually a late arrival, but not this time. Storms are coming, but we are going to talk about Faith (April's theme) and the power of…
The Cub Scout Meeting . I went to Cub Scout Pack 68′s pack meeting tonight. At least, I thought it was a pack meeting night. You could say it was more of a den meeting involving the whole pack. The pack meets at the meeting room at the city firehall.
Nature Merit Badge Today was the greatly anticipated arrival of a future Cub Scout...home. Yeah, I spent much of the day that I wasn't working having an extended-family dinner and holding my new grandson. Still there was some Scouting to do.
A skip day...Sunday did not hold much Scouting as it was Easter Sunday and it was spent at Church and with the family. I did not even see a Scout (outside my son) all day. Sometimes you need a day away and doing this 100 Days of Scouting a second time I realize I spend…
Music Merit Badge Sometimes opportunity knocks and goes away. That's what I had thought happened recently to a position someone asked me about: District Commissioner. Well, today it showed signs of life again...we'll see. I tweeted my fellow Scouters for their advice or opinions about what a DC should do, what makes a good one…
The PLC Meeting . The patrol leader council held their monthly meeting today to review April and plan for May's meetings and activities. Although they did get sidetracked a few times, they were able to plan next month's meetings and service project.
• Listened to the latest episode of the Scoutmaster podcast • Continued to work on my presentation on Shelter Box and Scouting for the upcoming trade-show • Received and started reading May/June issue of Scouting magazine, (dangerously tempted by ScottEVest discount) • Added the Outdoor Channel (the irony) to my cable subscription just so i
Not a lot has been happening over the course of the weekend. Actually, I only did a brief update on the pack website and that was about it. Sonia is off this weekend and it is Easter weekend. I have remained pretty quiet on Twitter, but everyone have a great day.
A quiet Saturday Scouting wise. Another afternoon in the garage and office. I had planned to build a fence and mow the lawn. Our landscape guy came by to feed and treat the lawn so NO mow until Monday :( and then the threat of rain the rest of the day kept me on inside projects.
Motorboating Merit Badge Easter is upon us, and a quiet day for everything. My new Cub Scout (grandson) will be in the hospital for a couple of days, but all looks well. Happy Easter! Today I: Updated my Scouting calendar.
I'd like to say that I've been deep in meditation on the Paschal Triduum but the reality of it is that it's just been uneventful the past few days as far as Scouts. I did a little prep for on Troop Leadership Training, some window shopping on a backpack for my son, a little work
Model Design and Building Merit Badge Still waiting on that grandbaby, and today pretty much has to be it. She's just over 2 weeks overdue now, so everyone is watching closely. Today is the 75th day of the 100 Days of Scouting.
Still on a high from Thursday Night's Eagle Boards. The Laundry List: - exchanged emails with the District Eagle Chair about another Eagle Candidate - emailed a few Scoutmasters and Scouters about Eagle Boards and thanks :) - talked to the CC about some new Volunteers in the Troop Yours In Scouting Bryan Permalink | Leave a comment »
Who is your CO? Does a good CO really matter? I can say that it does. When my son and I first joined the pack, we were chartered with the local school district. Then less than a year later, we lost that charter (separation of schools and scouting) and we were looking for another CO.
Metalwork Merit Badge OK, still waiting on the grandbaby. Thanks to my well-wishers! This is definitely not the Holy Week we had planned. The baby was due 2 weeks ago, and we thought we would be getting ready for family to come over on Easter for dinner.
I did a dozen things for Scouting yesterday but none more important than my duty as a Father. Tuesday, April 21, 2011 at 8:14pm my son walked out of his Board of Review as an Eagle Scout. As a Scoutmaster I am proud of all my Eagle Scouts but as a Dad I was on…
The Redcoats are coming, the Redcoats are coming!"… Not really, it was the British, but we all knew what Paul Revere was talking about. I am following up with my post from yesterday…I got a lot of feedback, and glad to see that I do have followers.
Medicine Merit Badge Another perfect merit badge image for the day! Holding my breath, waiting for a new grand-baby today. More cleaning up of Scout stuff--actual physical items around my office that need a better space to live. My hope is that the 100 Days of Scouting will help force me to focus on the…
Sorry, it was supposed to be a Scout Nation evening but that changed when my son got the phone call...he is going for his Eagle Board Thursday night. That meant a little pep talk and some prep for me, getting my uniform ready and practicing my introduction speech :) I stopped by the Scout Offices to…
Bring your "A" game…that's what I was talking about with a Scoutmaster Bryan. We have a few issues with our district. In our district, we have what is commonly called the "old war horse" patrol…you know these guys. They are the ones that wear the red, wool jackets, have all kinds of awards and expect…
Mammal Study Merit Badge Tenebrae service at the church tonight, so no Scout meetings--parking lot will be full, and a lot of our Scout families will be there. On a personal note, my daughter is very overdue having their baby...and it looks like her kids, my future Cub and his sister, are coming to my…
What a day. Work got in the way of Scouting today. We had some wild weather across Indiana and with the boss on vacation they asked me to help set it up. Nothing sucks worse then being the one who has to call co-workers and let them know they need to either stay to 2am…
I am so bad about writing, or am I? I have written more in the last 2+ months than I have written over the last 2+ years. I have had some good words of wisdom, given some good advice and have gotten a lot of positive feedback.
Lifesaving Merit Badge Paperwork day! Today was all about paperwork. Fill it out, double check, cross-reference, file, save, and send out follow-up emails. It can be so tedious ...but a necessary evil. I should try to find someone to do it, but I'd end up going over it all again anyway.
Tuckered out from a LONG weekend of Scouting but I still managed to get some in today: - worked on the Summer Camp Newsletter - prepared the Summer Camp Presentation PowerPoint for the next meeting - chatted with Co-Host @SM_Shawn - entered some 1st Year stuff into TroopMaster - ran some TM Reports for the Troop Guides and Patrol Advisors…
Leatherwork Merit Badge Man, am I sore. My leg muscles are rebelling every time I to up and down the stairs. The joys of backpacking! This is Holy Week, so a number of my usual things have fallen off of the schedule.
Sorry for the delay...been a busy weekend and a long Monday ahead prepping for the week. Saturday: - helped out our Troop Swim Coordinator at the local High School Pool. Just about all 141 Scouts have taken the BSA Swim test...and passed - sent out a reminder about the Eagle Court on Sunday - tried to fulfill a…
Law Merit Badge Just gorgeous out today! Since today was kind of an unplanned break from Scouting, I had most of the day to recover from the trip yesterday. Managed to get everything in my pack, including the pack, up on the clothesline.
Today was definitely one of the few rare days that's light on Scouting. We worked outside as a family to get the yard and garden ready for summer. After that I spent a couple hours trying to purge the basement. Former Cubmaster now Scoutmaster's basement… Gee you think there was any Scout stuff to be
Landscape Architecture Merit Badge Rain started about 3:30AM. All of the Scouts, ages 11-14, were up and ready to go by 7AM. Last night we had 3 miles of up to get to the campsite. Great view over a rock ledge of a neighboring town a couple of miles away.
Thank goodness for Friday. Fish Fry night (that I missed due to work) but got to do a little Scouting.. -worked on my part of the Sunday Eagle Court - chatted with some Scouter - talked to a Life Scout about his Eagle Board next week - worked with the Advancement Chair on some missing awards Yours In…
Journalism Merit Badge Watching the weather closely. Looks like a lot of storms in the South today, headed this way. We are going backpacking tonight and tomorrow, staying until Sunday. Eleven Scouts and 6 adults headed out for a little adventure--and rain.
2nd Thursday of the month is Roundtable! I love Roundtable! As soon as I walked in I bumped into @mattlackner and we chatted and then someone came up and said how much he loved our Twitter banter, it was @iPublicPolicy.
