It doesn't have the historical weight of W.D. Boyce's meeting with the Unknown Scout, but Bob Olafson considers his meeting with William Hillcourt to be just as special. Olafson met Hillcourt, known to you and me as "Green Bar Bill," and was never the same.
At the 2010 National Scout Jamboree last July, as I sat down and typed out a blog post for Scouting magazine's site, I wasn't thinking about the wireless network that allowed me to post those words and pictures. I was only thinking about how much fun I was having at my fourth jamboree and how…
The fleur-de-lis, an old-school plane, and some sort of insect. That's it for clues for this week's Name That Council. On Wednesday I asked you if you like tough Name That Council patches or prefer only easy ones. Most of you were up for a challenge, so this is it.
A boy must complete all requirements for the Eagle Scout Award by his 18th birthday, but why? That was the question posed by Scouter Kim. H. She writes: "Why do Scouts have to complete their Eagle requirements by their 18th birthday rather than by the time they graduate from high school?"
One of my favorite memories from Boy Scout camp-outs was gathering around the fire and listening to the assistant Scoutmasters tell campfire stories. I loved movies and books growing up, but there was something about those live stories that was more compelling than the printed word or images on a screen.
Click to view slideshow. You know the Scout Law, but you've never seen it like this. The 1913 Scout Law postcards seen above are a real treat. The cards, originally produced by The Henry Heininger Co., were reprinted by the Northern Star Council in Minnesota and sent to me.
I'm having a dilemma. I can't decide whether it's good or bad when there aren't very many correct answers for an edition of Name That Council. On the one hand, an easier mystery patch, like the Baden-Powell Council , means more people have a chance to win.
We get a lot of heartfelt letters at Scouting magazine, but a recent one has really stuck out in my mind. A few weeks ago I received a large manilla envelope from Arthur Warrick of the Baden-Powell Council. Inside were photos, newspaper clippings, and a two-page, handwritten letter.
Just a few months ago my Scouting magazine colleagues and I were taking the long walk down Thomas Road at Fort A.P. Hill. The 2010 National Scout Jamboree seems like it was yesterday, but somehow, we're already talking about the 2013 jamboree?
Last week, I asked you to dust off boxes, dig through storage closets, and scour your attic for pieces of Scouting memorabilia. But for some of you, I'll bet your BSA memories aren't stuffed in a box somewhere. I'm sure they're proudly displayed in your home.
After 22 months, and nearly 400,000 page views, Cracker Barrel is no more. Scouting magazine's official blog is now Bryan on Scouting, written by me, Bryan Wendell, an Eagle Scout and the associate editor of Scouting magazine. Like you, I'm passionate about the Scouting program and am always looking for compelling stories, fascinating people, and…

Whether it's tucked away in the attic or proudly displayed on your mantel, everyone who was in the Boy Scouts of America has a favorite piece of Scouting memorabilia. Eagle Scout and current Scouter Mark Truax sent us a picture of his favorite item, a Coca-Cola ad promoting the 1937 National Scout Jamboree.
For a patch with plenty of visual clues on it, this one sure was tough. That's because the Pioneer Valley Council no longer exists. In June of 2008, the council merged with the Great Trails Council to form the new Western Massachusetts Council.

The World Scout Conference announced today that The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve will host the 2019 World Scout Jamboree. That means that for the first time in 52 years, the global Scouting extravaganza will be held in the United States.

The Boy Scouts of America this week unveiled its brand identity pieces for 2011: "Prepared. For Life." The trademarked words incorporate the Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared," to show non-Scouts what Scouting is all about. The three simple words convey a clear message: By joining Scouting, boys and girls will be prepared for life and…
To earn the Boy Scout ranks of Star, Life, and Eagle, a boy has to serve in a position of responsibility for six months (four months for Star rank). But not every position of responsibility applies. Assistant patrol leader, for example, is not considered a position of responsibility in this sense.

Any great organization constantly tweaks and adapts its requirements to better reach its members, and the Boy Scouts of America is no exception. To that end, the BSA announced this week which requirements will change in 2011. One big item is actually more of a clarification than a complete change.
The prominent sign for U.S. Route 66 on this week's Name That Council patch is a clue ... somewhat. But considering that the famous road, one of the country's original highways, is nearly 2,500 miles long, it doesn't really narrow things down much.
We hope you enjoyed reading the poem we wrote for Friday's episode of Name That Council . But we know that you'd enjoy winning the free patch even more, so let's get to the results. As you can see above, the patch belongs to the Central Georgia Council based in Macon, Ga.

It was hard for our ancestors to Leave No Trace when building a cabin. After all, the key ingredient in constructing a log cabin was, well, logs. And that meant chopping down a few dozen trees. But it's the 21st century now, and modern technology has presented us with new ways minimize the environmental impact…
Judging by the 98 correct responses we got to Friday's Name That Council , this patch contained, perhaps, too many clues. But we like getting plenty of guesses, even if it reduces everyone's odds of winning the prize. This week's correct response was the Tall Pine Council , based in Flint, Mich.

It's cold outside, folks. That's even more reason to be jealous of the men and women who are members of the Gulf Ridge Council , headquartered in Tampa, Fla. Tampa's highs will be in the mid-70s this weekend, meaning nobody there will be getting out the snow tires any time soon.
