Some say there is a fine line between being the Scoutmaster and a Dad when your boy is in your troop. I think this is an interesting discussion and one that I live with every day. I have two sons that are in my troop and my Jamboree troop also.
And before you know it it is the end of June... geez where does the time go? Well let me give you an update of where I am. First, the Jamboree experience is a lot more than I thought it would ever be, and we are not there yet.
Last night as I was driving home from our Annual District Awards Dinner, I thought I would do a quick audio tweet. Some thoughts about an amazing week of Scouting. Listen here . Have a Great Scouting Day!
I got a Food dehydrator this year and have been experimenting with many new recipes for the trail. I found this cool video on You tube. Great ideas and great meal.. I tried it. Have a Great Scouting day!
Welcome back the Scoutmaster Minute. In this show we are revisiting an older show of mine, show number 4. It seems so long ago. This podcast focuses on Bullying. With the new Scout requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class all centered on Bullying, it was time to get a podcast out there.
Once again, I find myself way behind in the maintaining the blog and once again, it is not for a lack of ideas, thoughts, or want to... well anyway, lets get on with it... Last night I had the pleasure of practicing one of the great truisms of Scouting..
Now, as most of you know, I am a big fan of Alvin Townley Jr. the Author of Legacy of Honor and Spirit of Adventure. It is refreshing to see this advocate of the Scouting movement out there telling the Scouting story.
It's getting to be that time again that we need to worry about those pests in the woods getting at your food. Racoons, Bear, and the worst of all Chipmunks... Here is a good video demonstrating the PCT method of hanging your "Bear" bag or Food bag. Have a Great Scouting Day!
The Scouting Heritage Merit Badge is a new merit badge and a great way to allow Scouts to learn about the rich history and heritage of not only the Boy Scouts of America but the Scouting movement. Join Scoutmaster Jerry and his new co host Scott as they go through the requirements of the Scouting…
As most of you know, this year I have the privilege of not only being the Scoutmaster of my home troop, but also a troop heading to the National Jamboree. Now I am not saying that money buys success, attitude, or enthusiasm, but I am have noticed that about $3000 makes a pretty big difference.
When we teach the Scouts about task organization and what right looks like, it is important to teach initiative. What I have seen and learned over the last few years is that most of our Scouts, or young men in general lack initiative.
The Scoutmaster Minute Podcast Show 54 A listen in on Scoutmaster Jerry and his Assistant Scoutmasters as well as a few of the new Dads talking about what their expectations are in Scouting and of course.. no good camp discussion would be complete without a few great camp stories...
Ok, it's Youth protection month and everyone should be checking their training cards to make sure they are current in their training. The online version is actually pretty good and while it is a bit long, it sure is better than dedicating a Saturday Morning listening to a less than dynamic trainer ramble on about…
Sunday I had a discussion with a Scout in my Jamboree Troop, he was conflicted because of his commitments to both his High School band in which he is a leader, first chair and peer leader etc. and his opportunities to be a leader within our Jamboree troop.
The Scoutmaster Minute Podcast- 53 The PLC fixing the Train Wreck - April 13, 2010 Welcome back to the Scoutmaster Minute, in this show we will talk about fixing your troop with the PLC. Inspired from an email I received from a loyal listener, we talk about the success of a Troop and that it starts…
Prompted from discussion from my podcast with Mike Walton, the World Scout Crest Emblem raised more than an eye brow. Let me give you some background (I am not going to rehash the discussion from the podcast, you can listen to it using the link on the left).
Hey there.. check out the Scoutmaster Minute Facebook page for a little video of my Troop and I camping out on the East Side of Mt. Hood. We were looking for another snow camp out.. turned out to be dry and warm and no snow.
Just take a look at any Norman Rockwell painting, Scout leaders with Square jaws sitting by a perfect fire, scouts praying under the dining fly and a Scoutmaster standing vigil over sleeping Scouts on a perfect star lit night. Takes our breath away when we imagine what that time in Scouting was like.
Ran into this video awhile back... rediscovered it and need to share it. I originally ran into it from www.scoutmedia.org . Some really great life lessons common to all of us in the Scouting movement. Enjoy the Video. Have a Great Scouting Day!
OK.. we know what we must BE , we know what we must KNOW and now it is time to DO ... The Scoutmaster gives direction.. but understand this direction comes from many angles. Unlike a conductor, the Scoutmaster is not standing in front directing the band, he is offering advise and using Guided Discovery to get…
In our last post we talked about what a Scoutmaster must BE. An easy enough concept to grasp that a Scoutmaster must be an example of what right looks like, whether that is wearing the uniform correctly or pitching a tent, the Scoutmaster is not a Master of Scouts, rather a Master of Scouting and…
Today I spent the better part of it assisting with New Scoutmaster training. On the training team, it is my job to lead the discussion on the role of the Scoutmaster. As we wrapped up today's session, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss on the blog some of the basics of…
Well.. not absent minded... but at least absent, and not for a lack of creativity or idea, it's perhaps the worst excuse of all.. time. I ranted and raved over people that use the time excuse some time ago. At issue was people that say that they don't have time for this or that..
The other night I was invited to speak at a local Cub Scout Packs Blue and Gold Dinner. It was a fantastic event and based on the amount of little Orange and Blue hats running around.. Scouting is and will be healthy for some time.
This morning my Troop and I stood in a snow filled gully. The crisp mountain air and the smell of pine filled the air as our Chaplains Aide rose his hand in the Scout Sign, the signal for all to prepare for the Scouts own service.
Baden Powell called Scouting a "Game with a Purpose". The idea in that thought is that boys, young men, well heck.. even us older men, like to play games. There is something about the boy that moves him toward playing, competing, having fun.
100 Years!!! Today we Celebrate the Adventure!!! It is a great day to be in Scouting, no matter the program, today we celebrate the Anniversary of the greatest youth movement in the United States and we look to the Journey that will lead us on an expedition to the next 100!
I do not want to kick the horse to death, every blogger out there has made a comment or had an opinion on the new Centennial Badges of Rank.. so here is my take.. Short and sweet.. I thought at first that the BSA could have some up with something "Cooler" for the centennial year…
For those of you in the New Orleans area... I got this today.. thought I'd spread the word. Boy Scouts of America Adventure Base 100 to Visit New Orleans Take a break from the Mardi Gras festivities and come celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.
In this show we discuss Leadership and how leaders are made within the program of the Boy Scouts of America. Starting in Cub Scouts when the Scout learns the value of obedience, all the way up through adulthood, when the Scout manifests his leadership in his daily life.
Some of the principles that leaders need to know to be effective are: Honesty. The Leader must always be honest in everything he does. The problems with dishonesty are numerous, but when it comes to youth, they will eventually get caught up in dishonesty and will be called on it.
This weekend before we hiked out of camp, our chaplains aid delivered a real nice Scouts Own service. His message to the Troop was to develop good habits. He challenged the Troop to stay away from bad habits, especially when camping.
When I hike or hit the trail on a nice backpacking trip I always use trekking poles. They are great little tools that help climb hills, steady myself through rocky terrain, ease the load when descending and generally, they keep me balanced.
Every once in a while you need to check your compass and determine whether or not you are heading in the right direction, you need to detour a bit, or just confirm that all is well and you keep on hiking.
OK, when you love camping and you have a little time on your hands.. well this is what happens. Here are a couple videos I slapped together to talk about winter gear and cooking... It just does not get any better than that my friends.
Adventure Base 100 is touring America, unfortunately it will not be coming to my Council, but it will be coming to the Chief Seattle Council up North. Fortunately for me I will get to explore Adventure Base 100 at the National Jamboree!
In this show Scoutmaster Jerry gets pumped about our heritage and legacy and prepares to celebrate the Centennial! Share your Scouting story or way that you are celebrating the Centennial email Scoutmaster Jerry at [email protected] or find him on Skype and talk about it..
Wishing all of you the very best in this New Year! As we celebrate all that Scouting has given we look ahead to all that Scouting has to offer in the coming years. 2010 is the year for Scouting.. Lets make the very most of it! Have a Great Scouting Year!
Over the last couple of days, since I posted my Cold weather Camping Card, there has been a lot of discussion and email flying around about techniques, procedures, and skills needed for, in particular, cold weather camping. I would suggest that as Scout leaders we take this very seriously.
I recently posted a "Cold Weather fact Card" that our Scout Troop uses for training and preparing for cold weather camping. The beauty of the internet is that we can share ideas, thoughts, and information.. and most of all we learn (in most cases).
In the PTC Media Forums the subject of Den Chiefs came up. There were some questions from a Cub Scout leader that was looking to have a Den Chief for her Den in the coming year. Here is my response: From a Scoutmasters perspective, Den Chiefs are a fantastic asset to your unit.
This is the Cold Weather Camping Fact sheet or help card that we use at my Troop. It is a nice tool for teaching cold weather camping to the Scouts. We find it helpful to the Scouts so they can use it as a reference sheet.
I think that as long as there are guys like me there will be debates on which is the best type of stove to take on backpacking trips. And as long as there are guys like me.. we will have each type of stove..
I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas. Christmas is such a special time of year for me and my family and I hope that this Christmas, even when times are tough, there is not enough bang in the buck, we are still at war, and jobs…
In Show 46 I have a great interview with an incedible Scouter. Most of you that follow scouting on the internet know of Halfeagle.com . Even more of you know of ClassB.com ... well meet the man behind the scenes in this interview.
PTC Media wishes you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year! Go to www.ptcmedia.net to listen to or download the PTCMedia Christmas special! Have a Great Scouting.... CHRISTMAS!
