Mike Walton from the US Scouting Service Project issued a challenge for 2010 for all of us in the Scouting world. Check it out here. A week or so ago.. I issued the same challenge of the Scoutmaster Minute Facebook site.
In this show we talk about Cold Weather First Aid/Injuries. Jerry discusses the major cold weather injuries, prevention, symptoms and treatment, that you may run into during your Cold weather camping adventures. Topics include; Dehydration, Hypothermia, and Frost Bite. To learn more about Cold Weather First Aid and Cold Weather Injuries check out these sites…
I heard an inspirational message from Lou Holtz, former great Football Coach. He took great pride in teaching young men to be outstanding athletes, citizens, and gentlemen. He shares three keys to success in life.. this is time tested and true.
I should have put the link in for the audio cast of the Boy Scouts of America's Celebration Kick Off. If you missed it on the 10th.. you can hear the entire program at AUDIO CAST! Bravo to Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive Tico Perez, National Commissioner John Gottschalk, BSA National President Jack Furst, National…
Well last night was, I guess, the "Official Kick off" of the Centennial celebration of the Boy Scouts of America!! Extremely exciting I kept thinking to myself as I listened in on to the online rally last night. Listening to the vision and excitement of the presenters.
Every culture has its right of passage to manhood, but there is an ancient Cherokee right of passage in which the father of a young man takes his son out into the forest, blindfolds him and sits him on a stump.
Let me share with you a story about a High Performance team. I recently had the opportunity to help coach a football team. This team was made up from 14 year olds from all over the Portland/Metro area. 35 young men that came together on a football field with one thing in common...
In Show 44 we share some feedback and our 5 star rating on iTunes. We also talk about some Scouting Technology in the news and Cold Weather Camping. I even thow in a great tip for good eats on your next backpack adventure.
There is an on going debate about electronics used in Scouting. While "Traditional" Scouters shun the new technologies and do not embrace what is the future, others seems to grab ahold and run with the new ways to "DO" Scouting.
I would like to wish all of our Nations Veterans a Blessed Veterans Day! Our Nation maintains it's freedom because of those few that stand up and say I will serve. Thank you all. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live…
The Scoutmaster Minute has now hit the big time.. errr.. well maybe not the big big time.. but at least 2009 and Twitter! I have been on twitter for some time now, but until recently have not really used it "to it's potential" as they say.
Recently I had a chat with a number of the Scouts in my troop about their Eagle Projects. Landscaping, fence building, compost bins, flag pole/ memorials etc... were among the list of ideas that hit the table as these young men begin the process of completeling their Eagle requirements.
We have been talking about winter camping at the Troop the last couple weeks in an effort to be prepared for some terrific Cold weather camping experiences. I talked extensively about the word COLD (Clean, Overheating, Loose in Layers, and Dry).
I take credit only for seeing this one. The Circle 10 Council put this video out and if the National Council does not use it, they are missing out. I do not come from a "inner city" unit, but the impact on teen agers in pretty much the same.
It's getting to be that time of year.. time for some Cold Weather Camping. This is one of my favorite times of year to camp. Kind of a weird thing to say, as I love to camp all year long, but camping in the Fall and Winter are great and I look forward to it…
To the dismay of my kids and most... it is true that we never stops learning. No, not always in a class room, but as we move through life there are ample opportunities to learn and to continue to grow.
I recently received a comment from a fellow named Scott. He was commenting on the "Self express yourself out" post. He writes; "You should also be clear about not judging without being judged. We have Scouts from in our city Troop waiting for you to point out how they don't fit in.
WHAT? Real life? Isn't Scouting part of your life all the time? Well you did make a promise to live the Scout Oath and Law, and to do your DUTY, and at the very least to do your best... Right?
The Scoutmaster Minute Early shows are back up and on line. You can get them from iTunes. Shows 1-29 are available for download again after some server changes and adminstrative maintainence the shows are back. I would like to thank all of you that have asked for them.
I had an interesting encounter today at work. I came out of one of my customers establishments to meet a young person that seemed rather upset. He was dressed rather oddly I suppose, he was dressed mostly in black with lots of patches and symbols on his jacket.
Last night at our Troop meeting we took a few minutes to talk about this crazy thing called the internet. The Internet is a wonderful thing, I wish we had it when I was a kid. Homework help, research resources, and social networking are just a few things that I would have enjoyed, and enjoy…
So how many chances do we get? How many mistakes are we allowed to make? At what time does our Character start to erode beyond the point of repair? These are questions that are always out there.. but no one seems to want to answer.
In my last Podcast I answered 20 questions, it was a lot of fun to get the questions from folks that normally listen to the show and a great opportunity to get in touch with them via the Q&A. One of the questions in particular I thought needed more time and thought.
In this show Scoutmaster Jerry answers 20 questions. 20 questions were emailed from our listening audience and I answer them all. Jerry is joined by a very special guest host for this one. A look behind the curtain and a glimpse of some of Jerry's Scouting philosophy as he answers 20 questions.
Thanks for all the questions.. we have 20 and will be recording the show this week. Look for your question or just for the answers coming real soon. I will have a very special Guest host on this show, you don't want to miss it.
An avid listener of the Scoutmaster minute Podcast wants behind the curtain. In a email, the listener asked me to do a show on questions. SOOOOO.. here we go... we are going to do 20 questions. ASK... whatever you want and I will answer them.
God created Foot ball. Yes fans its Saturday in the fall and time to settle in for football. As I laid out this season, which games I could not miss, the teams that have the best shot at a National title, and interesting story lines, I got caught up in what Football really is.
Losing a game is heartbreaking. Losing your sense of excellence or worth is a tragedy." - Joe Paterno I am a self proclaimed Football freak. I love to watch Football, especially when my son is on the field. This weekend I was blessed with watching some good football games, my son's team won in a shut…
I have started a new Mini Podcast. These podcasts will be tips, recipes, and Scoutmaster Shorts. This podcast is not replacing the Scoutmaster Minute Podcast, but a way that I can get short tips and stuff out for people to enjoy.
In today's paper there was a disturbing article about 5 Coaches from a High School in Portland that seem to forgotten that they have a certain level of responsibility when it comes to their behavior. One of the men was the Basketball coach, it seems that he has an affliction for drinking and driving, and…
In this show Scoutmaster Jerry tackles a couple great topics. First, we talk about when Scouting Manifests itself in our Scouts. Then we talk about Podcasting and Social Media, we wrap it up with where the heck has Scoutmaster Jerry been?
I consider myself pretty lucky. I received an email today from the mother of one of my Scouts. I appears that her son was to write an essay at School. She forwarded the essay to me. I would like to share it with you.
On our last Backpacking Trip we took along with us some honored Veterans. They had served their country with honor and dignity for years and it was fitting to take them on this last adventure for their retirement. The Scouts built a really nice fire, got it hot and established a nice bed of coals.
I was talking to a couple parents of Scouts in my Troop the other night when the discussion led to when they would see the results of Scouting in their sons? It made me think a little about just when Scouting manifests itself in our boys, or the boys that pass through our Troops.
The readers and listeners of the Scoutmaster Minute are the greatest on Earth. I announced the winners of my first contest this morning. This evening I received 50 emails requesting the winning recipes.. I am going to be doing a segment on an upcoming podcast as well as a video.
Drum role please.... I have selected the winners of the First ever Scoutmaster Minute Tip and recipe contest. First of all, I must say thank you to everyone that submitted a tip or recipe. They were all really good tips and the recipes..
Not quite Shakespeare. . But it's all I had... Yesterday while listening to the radio at work the talk show host began a rant on Bloggers. Actually, he always rants on bloggers because he is a writer for the local fish wrapper and feels that blogging has in many ways destroyed the "Legitimate News media".
Today is the last chance to get your Tip or Recipe in... Act fast! Tomorrow I will start the final cut and come up with a winner (or two). A big thanks to all of you that have participated in this contest.
This is the Video that I put together to celebrate a great week at Summer Camp with the Scouts of Troop 664. We had a great week and the video really shows the fun we had. Enjoy! Have a Great Scouting Day!
There is not a Scoutmaster that I know that has not said those words in conversation. We all know of a boy that really does need Scouting. We have them in our Troops, we know them in the neighborhood, we see them in our kids Schools.
What's in My Backpack. Most Backpackers are always tweeking their gear, replacing old stuff with new, looking for lighter, tougher, more useful (multi use) and of course just plain cool gear. Recently I upgraded some gear, namely my backpack. After years of carrying my Kelty External Frame Tioga 5500 I have switched to an internal…
Our first contest is keeping me busy test new tips and of course some good eats. You only have 5 days left to submit your tip or recipe. Trust me when I say that there is NO CLEAR winner yet..
I received a comment on my post about Backpacking Trip planning made easy. The Reader asked a few questions I would love to answer. Here is his comment: Jerry, Oregon must be a great place for backpacking. Tell us how far you have to go to get to the trail heads around you.
Planning for a Backpacking trek can be a chore or a pleasure. Most Scouts shy away from the chore.. SOOOO... here are a few ways to make Trek planning for the Scouts simple and less "Chore like". First and foremost..
By now most of you have read the most recent issue of Scouting Magazine . Bob Mazzuca started off the theme of fitness in his "From The CSE" article on page 8. Then on page 45 there is an article called "Fat Chance".
