I have talked about it before.. but I love to pass on "Expert" advice on backpacking and camping gear. I always tell the Scouts that if you take care of your gear it will take care of you. Your tent is more than likely the most expensive or at least in the top three most…
We have been talking a lot lately about gear. I did a couple podcasts on gear and have received lots of great feedback and comments on what is peoples backpacks and what they prefer to use when out on the trail.
Developing in our young men an appreciation for the Out doors is part of the job description of the Scoutmaster, well it's not.. but it should be. I stumbled on this short video that really captures some of those ideas in an interview with Ken Burns. Enjoy. Have a Great Scouting Day!
I have received some great tips and recipes. But I want more... hey, the more I get.. the more I get to try and better yet taste. There is only about 2 weeks left to get your favorite recipe or tip in to qualify for a great prize from Trailstop.com.
I am officially cross eyed and my fingers are numb from signing blue cards and helping get the advancement requirements from summer camp into the Troopmaster program. So bragging for the boys, here is how it broke down: 59 merit badges earned (complete), 10 partials.
Back from a week at summer camp. The event of the year when everything comes together, a time to practice the patrol method. To live as a patrol, hanging out with friends, testing skills, learning new ones and just plain having fun.
We are half way through the month.. Get your recipes and tips into the Scoutmaster minute for a shot at a fantastic prize. Remember.. you do not have to be a backpacker to enter.. any camping tip or recipe will be welcome.
Gone to camp... Enjoying the finer parts of Scouting and helping to deliver the promise to a troop of outstanding young men! I will check in with a full report next week! Have a Great Scouting Day!
Getting ready for summer we are looking at the merit badges offered at camp. It has been a long standing rule of mine that Scouts in their first year at camp take at least one Eagle Required merit badge. Something like Environmental Science or First Aid.
Hey Scouts and Scouters.. I am always wanting to share what's in my pack, ideas, tips, and love to suggest good reading. Here is a must have for every backpacker.. no matter what your skill level is. If you are an expert...
As a Scout leader we teach our Scouts to "Be Prepared".. then we ask, Be prepared for what.. the reply.. "Anything" Typically translates to lots of stuff going into the pack which means more weight. We try to keep the packs of our Scouts down to around 25% of their body weight.
As you all know I am a huge fan of backpacking and camping in general! This month the Scoutmaster minute Visitors have a chance to win a $25 coupon code for TrailStop.com , which includes free FedEx Ground Shipping! About the Prize: The good folks over at TrailStop.com have offered up this month's prize which is…
I dug this one out of the Scoutmaster archives. I really like this meal out on the trail. Just enough pop to satisfy. Tasty, easy, and worth the prep. Give this one a try.. you will not be disappointed. Have a Great Scouting Day!
As Parents we try to raise our children with a set of values. We derive those values from our families, our church, and the way in which we were raised. Important things like respecting our elders, being trustworthy, not stealing, and how we manage our money and things.
Show 39 is out and I am really excited about it. In this show Scoutmaster Jerry invites Tinny from Minibull design into the Scoutmaster Minute for a discussion on Alcohol Stoves. Join us and learn more about ultra light backpacking stoves.
The BSA just rolled out a new patch for the Centennial celebration. I was down at the local Scout Shop and saw this new emblem. I was surprised that I had not heard much about this even though I am a Scoutmaster for the National Jamboree contingent.
I recently posted my 38th Podcast . I was joined by Shawn from Wisconsin, we spent about 50 minutes talking about Unit discipline. The point of the show was to discuss how we maintain discipline in our units and what constitutes a disciplined unit.
But you need to motivate him to drink. Recently we had a fantastic camp out on the gorgeous Oregon Coast. During that camp out we held a contest or competition on cooking a backpacking dinner. The Scouts were judged on planning, preparation, presentation and cooking, and clean up.
My last two podcast on gear have been a hit. And the emails are pouring in about the shows. So I will get more backpacking information, tips, and reviews out here on the Scoutmaster minute. One request that has been popping up is a permeant link to the podcasts on gear.
Try not be become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value." - Albert Einstein. Your worth is not measured in cars, houses, and money. Your worth is measured by the time that you give. The time that you give selflessly to others.
Breakfast in Camp In this show we wrap up a great discussion on gear. Join me and the Assistant Scoutmasters as we continue a discussion on gear. In this show we talk about our camp kitchens, raingear, clothing, and much, much, more.
Nothing Ventured... Nothing Gained.. That is pretty much how the advancement program in Boy Scouts works. If you don't do the work..you don't get the rank. It's that simple. Unlike advancing in Cub Scouts where the Group works together to achieve, Boy Scouts is different in that it challenges the Scout to do the work…
This is totally a non Scouting post.. but it speaks volumes about Character. I got this in my inbox today and it asked to forward it and keep it going. Well... I hate doing that.. so I thought I would use my blog to fufill the promise of " Fowarding it".
My latest podcast is all about gear and what's in your Backpack. A good discussion with the Assistant Scoutmaster's of Troop 664 and me. We had a blast recording it and think that there is some good information in the show for you.
I hope that everyone had a great Independence Day. Mine was extremely good and let me tell you why. I went camping with my family, my sisters family, and a family that are close friends of ours, almost family in fact.
I have talked about influence a bit here at the Scoutmaster Minute, mainly because I try not to take for granted the influence that I have on the lives of the young men we have in Scouting. Yesterday I was given some shocking news about a few kids in our neighborhood.
I want to extend a Happy Independence Day to the Scoutmaster Minute Family. This is a celebration of Character, Determination, and Will. This nation was born not because of of a piece of land, but because men (and women) were willing to stand for right.
There is a great little book available called The Scoutmaster Minute, Your handbook for inspiring moments by Ron Wendel. I like this little book, fits well in the pack and it has saved my bacon a time or two when I needed something quick at a camp fire or at the end of a meeting.
Now I don't know what has happened to boys.. and you before you think I am going to rant about video games and MTV.. stop. But I wonder when we stopped being physically fit. I remember as a kid there were not to many "Heavy kids".
Not that this is a regular segment ...but I had to make the title catchy... But here is my recipe of the week, can't remember where I got it, more than likely from our friends at Trail Cooking.com Try this one.
In business numbers are everything.. in Scouting... well not so much, but when it comes to impact... I guess a number can demonstrate that you are in fact making a small impact and spreading the word, helping others to deliver the promise of Scouting.
A new Show is out. The final part of my 3 part series on Leave No Trace. You can get more information and down the show here . Or you can download and listen to the show by clicking here . Either way.. enjoy the show. Have a Great Scouting Day!
I love this one. Our Founder truly was a man of vision and insight. "We only have a short time to live, so it is essential to do things that are worthwhile and to do them now." ~ Lord Robert Baden-Powell Have a Great Scouting Day!
Today is Fathers day , ties will be given, maybe a new tool or handy gadget, a gift hand made by loving hands. Today we honor our fathers. Have a BBQ and be nice to dear old dad. I tend to look at fathers day this year from the prospective of the father.
As Scouts develop and grow they acquire skills and better their camping techniques. They learn through the Start, Stop, and Continue process and each and every camp out they get better and better. Right? Well, we would hope so. You all know that old adage, "You can lead a horse to water..."
A Scout can be Trusted , a Scout is Trustworthy. Rule or Reminder? IF I am a person of character, a person that has grown with a set of Values, then do I need a rule to tell me to be Trustworthy?
Not that I am a number watcher.. BUT... I wanted to say thank you to all of you that read and share the Scoutmaster Minute. The numbers do not mean a thing as I do this out of a love for Scouting, as you can see there are no adds that shoot money my way...
Recently Bear Grylls was appointed as the new Chief Scout of the British Scouting Association. For those of us on this side of the pond, this is not a significant news item, except that most everyone I talk to about it seems to think that he will impart his "Survival antics" from the TV show…
I am a fan of the Ask Andy column at the US Scouting Service Project. Andy's no nonsense, straight answers are just up my ally. I was reading his May 26th column and chanced upon this gem. Giving all the credit where it is due..
OK.. so I know that most of you have already been there and seen it... But I just spent some time watching the BSA You tube channel and the new "Words to live by" campaign. I like it. I think it is a great way of presenting Scouts and Scouting and I'll say that I…
It seems that I have been on a LNT kick lately... well yes and no.. I am always on that bandwagon. It helps out unit get better at our camping skills, in particular planning. My last couple podcasts have been on Leave No Trace, and the next couple will also be on Leave no trace.
Recently Nick wrote a piece on his blog regarding politics and Scouting and how the two should never meet. I agree, after all.. there is no such thing as values and moral thinking in the political arena, no offense if there are political types that follow the blog.
The Scoutmaster Minute Show #34- Leave No Trace Part 2
A weekend of trash, with old fuel canister Continuing from our last show on Leave No Trace, Scoutmaster Jerry discusses the next two principles of Traveling and Camping on Durable surfaces and Disposing of Waste properly or Pack it in..
As you know , or may not know... much of our camping experiences seem to hover around when the next meal is. We set camp... have a Cracker Barrel. We wake up... Breakfast. We do an activity until... lunch. We resume activity until it's time to prepare dinner.
