So I posted the other day about a 'payday' moment. During a SMC for Eagle towards the end the Life Scout looked at me and said he enjoyed talking with me. It was different from talking with the old Scoutmaster, it was more like talking with a friend.

Day 12 was a full day of Scouting! It was Day 2 of Troop Leader Training Weekend. We would be he all day if I recalled each and every Scout thing we did but here are some highlights: - Talked about The 8 Methods of Scouting - Servant Leadership - The Leading EDGE and Teaching EDGE - The 4…

One of our ASMs always likes to address the Scouts at this time of year! He says it's time to do a good turn, go our and find the local fire hydrants and dig them out. Take your shovel and lay it down with the handle touching the top, and then make sure you dig…
It was just one of those days... - sent files to get printed for TLT Book for this weekend. - called SPL to remind him about Fish Fry this Friday and find out what he would be teaching at TLT and any thing he wanted to change or get rid of - took 30 minutes to organize paperwork…
Welcome my friends to the show that never ends: - Continued working on the TLT handbook - talked with SPL about TLT and PLC meeting - edited TLT powerpoint to add some changes I've been thinking of - went to PLC Meeting, ran most of it as it is a portion of TLT training.
Home again home again jiggidy jig.... - today I put together the Agenda and Worksheet for the PLC Meeting tomorrow. This is the first for the new PLC so I set the agenda as part of the Troop Leader Training Weekend...
They call me the Working Man....that's what I am.... - updated Troopmaster for Leadership positions to reflect the elections last Tuesday - started building our Troop Leader Training book for TLT Weekend - updated Troop website, new Scout Webmaster starts soon. - worked on Gettysburg trip roster...all filled up and we have a waiting list!
It's one small step for man: Awoke at 5am to make it to Camp Red Wing for Wood Badge Staff meeting. Spent the day developing my Troop Guide skills and getting my assignments. I'm an Eagle (both an Eagle Scout AND a Wood Badge Eagle) and will be the Troop Guide for Buffaloes!
And the beat goes on: - prepped for Wood Badge Staff weekend tomorrow - read Aids to Scoutmastership by LPB (34 edition I picked up at local Trade-O-Ree last week) - talked to Council about being part of the new Scout Education Center being built.
Continuing the Adventure: - Worked on the roster for our October Gettysburg trip - picked up 37 new neckerchiefs for our 37 Webelos crossing over in March - talked to one Scout and offered him a Troop Guide position (the only Leadership Position in our Troop assigned by the Scoutmaster) - went to Roundtable were I: - approved an Eagle…
And so continues the celebration! Today I organized the Leadership position wants and needs for the SPL to pick his Quartermasters, Historians and Librarians. I then went to the Troop Committee meeting to give the Scoutmaster's Report. I had to attend my son's Band Concert so was late, emailed my report to the CC to…
First off, let us stopping using Boy Led! We are making men here so let us stop labelling them as children. I have made an effort to call them 'guys' instead of boys and Scouts at ceremonies instead of "this kid" or "this boy".
So it starts, the next Scouting century! Day 1: Assisted the Troop in elections tonight. We elected a new SPL and 7 new Patrol Leaders. Also am working with a Life Scout putting together his Eagle Book. Remember: Volunteer for Scouting! It's only an hour a week :) YIS Bryan Permalink | Leave a comment »
First go here for the original website and idea: http://100daysofscouting.blogspot.com/2010/02/power-of-100.html That is an incredible undertaking and a great idea. So much so that I am going to follow along and join in the fun. So visit him and then come back here every day...wish me (and him) luck! YIS Bryan Permalink | Leave a comment »
So last night to celebrate 100 years of Scouting the PLC planned our Winter Court of Honor. Since it is the 'off' season' one there are few awards to give out. But the SPL felt strongly that we should all be together on the 100th Anniversary.
Today, February 8th, 2010 is the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America! In 1910 William D Boyce brought back from England Lord Baden-Powell's Scouting For Boys. Getting together with Ernest Seton and Dan Beard (and other like minded folks) that took the fragmented youth groups of the time and formed one big organization…
Most think of money when saying the Scout Law, but one can be thrifty with many things. I had a Scoutmaster Conference with a 2nd Class Scout this weekend and when I asked him which part of the Scout Law he needed some work on he said "Thrifty".
Like all Troops, at this point in time, we are actively recruiting those 2nd year Webelos. We have a Webelos Transition Chair, the former SM and other Volunteers all working with the Webelos. We had several campouts and one meeting a month dedicated to bring in Webelos and their families in and expose them to…
It is funny that the first response is from the Scouter that gave me the idea for the post in the first place. While March is some time away I needed to start thinking about that Roundtable presentation. Between now and then I have 3 classes to teach at University of Scouting, WoodBadge Staff meetings…
Hello fellow Internet Scouts and Scouters. At the March Roundtable I have been volunteered to give the presentation. The theme for the month is Scouting On The Internet. I have tons of resources (podcasts, blogs, websites, twitter, etc). But am still looking for more.
Here is a shameless plug for my Troop's website, www.troop199.org . Please visit it. I only say this because of the photo on the front page. This photo is special. Every month I usually get the entire Troop together right before we get in the cars on Sunday afternoon and take a picture.
It has been non-stop since our return from Ireland Monday night. Tuesday brought our PLC Meeting and my son is the SPL, so we were both there at our 1am planning the rest of the month with the PLC. Come Saturday instead of sleeping in on my day off, I was up at 6am and…
During my recent visit to Ireland I had the opportunity to meet up with a Scout Leader and his son (recapped here in an earlier post, look for it) and I noticed broken down to the basics, without the ranks and merit badges, the patches and uniforms, the pomp and the circumstance we shared Scouting's…
Yes I know we are on Day 5 of the new year but I just got back to the states and back into the Scoutmaster mode (PLC Tonight). I keep telling the Troop to get ready for a great 2010!
It started easily enough, my son was Life and looking at Eagle. I was on the District Committee as the Advancement Chair and looking to make a dent in the MBC process. I was the AdChair for my Troop, working my Ticket and helping some Scouts to Eagle.
We have been in Ireland since Christmas Day. Seeing the sights and exploring this great country. The food is incredible, thesites breathtaking: the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle, Muckross Abbey and the towns of Killarney and Dingle. I could go on but today was a special day.
Last weekend at our annual Lock In we had 33 Webelos show up with 74 members of the Troop. It is a recruiting tool and a way to give those Webelos an opportunity to see Scouts in action and help with the Arrow of Light.
Every year the Troop has a Lock In at the lock High School. Outside our Ski Trip it is the one 'campout' the guys look forward to! Woke up early yesterday and completed my final prep. We arrived at 6:30 and set up the High School.
This is an Eagle Scout! Tonight at the District Eagle Boards of Review this Scout passed with flying colors. When the his Court of Honor rolls around we will talk about his time in Scouting, his Merit Badges, the Leadership he provided, his Nights Camping, the High Adventures he went on, etc.
Last night was our annual Holiday Party. 70 Scouts gathered for the meeting, broke into Patrols to finish planning for our Lock In Saturday and then came back in for our Holiday Party. Every Scout brought a gift for a needy child, every Scout brought a gift for the Troop Gift Exchange, every Scout brought…
What do your Troops do for High Adventure. We do trips that are outside the 'traditional' definition of High Adventure, sure we do Philmont every other year and send Scouts to Boundary Waters and SeaBase either with the Council or set up by the Troop.
Today was the Eagle Court of Honor for 5 incredible Scouts. While I have just only been their Scoutmaster since March I have known and worked with them all for several years. It was a great celebration of several Scouting careers.
So we did not get a spot on the 2011 Philmont treks. For the past 6 years we have send 2+ crews to Philmont every other year and I guess our luck has finally run out. The fortunate thing is that our Council has 60 slots in 2011 and we can already easily fill 1…
Service is a big part of Scouting, service to one's self, one's Troop and one's Community. This is the season of giving and many people do their annual thing around this time, be it a Giving Tree or Adopt-a-Family for the Holidays.
Our monthly Troop Committee meeting was last night. While a Troop should be Scout-led any very successful Troop has a well organized Troop Committee behind it. Last night's meeting was an odd one in the fact that the usual suspects were not in attendance.
Today in Indiana is our Annual Governor's Luncheon for Scouting. I, unfortunately, am unable to get some time off work to attend. However I was able to get 3 of my Scouts to go as part of the Ceremony. They will be recreating the "Unknown Scout", complete with Lamppost and Smoke machine (which we will…

Tis the season", it seems Christmas started early this year, like before Halloween! There are lights and trees and Christmas music and sales and Black Friday and Cyber Monday all happening right now like a whirlwind. Now I enjoy great light displays and Caroling and a 42in plasma TV for $399 but this all confuses…

The 18th Perfect Game As you know I love baseball and last week something very special happened in the Majors. Pitcher Mark Buerhle of the Chicago White Sox threw a Perfect Game. That means that he faced 27 batters and not a one made it on base.
