Rank requirements, Scoutmaster conferences and boards of review. Leaders worked through the Guide to Advancement and helped Scouts move from Scout to First Class and beyond.

The 2011 Guide to Advancement has been released: The Guide to Advancement is the official source for administering advancement in all Boy Scouts of America programs: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, Venturing, and Sea Scouts. It replaces the Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures and Advancement and Recognition Policies and Procedures, which are no longer…
The 2011 Guide to Advancement is ready. It has a few significant changes and gives individual units more room to define their own expectations: Active Participation requirements updated. Units can set their own 'active' expectations. Position of Responsibility requirements updated.
A Universal Job Description for Scout Youth Leaders.
Is there really a job description for Scout youth leaders? Every First Class Scout is a leader by definition. Three requirements for advancement are common to every rank after First Class: 1. Merit Badges 2. Service to the community 3.
When tracking your Scouts' advancement achievements, you could find yourself in a sky-high pile of disorganized chaos. So what do you do as a den leader, Scoutmaster, advancement chair, or even a parent when a Scout needs proof to backup his next rank advancement?
A young man sits across from you at a table, he is new to the Troop and seeking that first badge.. the Scout Badge. He sheepishly asked for a Scoutmaster conference, and now he is stepping off on the Trail to Eagle.
Day 7 of the #100daysofscouting project ended at our Troop meeting last night. Final preparations for this weekends camp out and Scoutmaster minute that left many of the Scouts wondering if they were ever going to be Eagle Scouts. Ok let me explain...
Advancement is one of the "Methods of Scouting" used in Boy Scouts. I am the Advancement Chair for our troop, so I am always interested in other Scouters' thoughts on advancement.
The Board of Review. Terrifying to the new Tenderfoot Scout. Confusing to the new committee member. How does the Scout prepare? What are the board members supposed to cover and ask? I have been scoutmaster long enough to see a lot of people come and go on the committee.
Here's an excerpt from Ask Andy's December 10th column . Hi Andy: My question has to do with BSA national policies and why so many troops seem to stray... For example, my son recently "failed" his Scoutmaster conference for First Class...
A reader asks: "Our troop seems to think we should hold off the scouts until they are older (ie end of Junior Year) to do their Eagle Projects and try to control the pace of advancement in the troop because they want the scouts to be more "mature" and stick around to lead the younger…
Advancement Report to include advancements in all programs
3 Vote On Idea I reference the District Advancement Report in reporting for grants and United Way. Currently, the District Advancement Report identifies Cub Scout and Boy Scout advancements, as well as separate merit badge section, but does not include Venturing advancement data.
4 Vote On Idea On the MyScouting website, the "Unit Tools" for Cub Scout Advancement - "Internet Advancement" - has no place to enter Tiger Rank and Awards and does not show these ranks and awards when entered by the council Scout office.
I've been thinking about it, and I have a concern with this new requirement #6 for Life rank: While a Star Scout, use the EDGE method to teach a younger Scout the skills from ONE of the following six choices, so that he is prepared to pass those requirements to his unit leader's satisfaction.
I'm not really an advocate of pushing fast advancement on new scouts, but it's important to have opportunities for advancement available so those that participate are not held back from moving ahead. Not much worse than a scout not getting to forge ahead when he's chomping at the bit.
Centennial rank advancement badges now available for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts
Have you ever thought to yourself, "Oh, to be young again?" The time-honored phrase must ring true now for you former Scouts with the release of special 2010 rank-advancement insignia. If you were still of Scouting age, you could proudly sew one of these once-in-a-lifetime patches onto your uniform.
The National Council has announced that all rank patches for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for 2010 will feature special designs. The patches called the ‘2010 Centennial Rank Advancement Badges' feature 2010, Boy Scouts of America, and the rank in text.
2 Vote On Idea Add a leadership development component to each rank advancement. We currently have leadership opportunities, but do not have a lot of training. Each rank could focus on a different aspect of leadership: visioning or goal casting, conflict management, character of a leader, time-management, team communication, team development, etc.
Scout Tracker records individual rank advancement in a Scout's iPhone or iPod touch. The current version includes the January 1, 2010 rank requirements. This simple, utilitarian and welcome way of tracking advancement is another demonstration of how useful an iPod, iPhone or similar device can be in Scouting.
0 Vote On Idea It would be very helpful to have an Advancement Percentage instead of just the raw number of advancement on the District Advancement report. If a pack has 10 advancements in a year is that good or bad?
Hello fellow Scouters, Hopefully you are using a den advancement chart in your den meetings. They are a great way to show the progress of the boys towards their rank, and show off how many electives the boys earn. I used them in my two dens to chart progress.
5 Vote On Idea When looking at the District Advancement report for a whole district, it is impossible to tell how many youth are in the units. The advancement report may say there are "X" rank, "Y" rank, and "Z" rank, and the total is _____.
Improve Reporting of Training & Advancement for District Volunteers
4 Vote On Idea We really need to be able to give our volunteers report updates on a regular basis that we KNOW are accurate. The reports in MyBSA for Training are never accurate for everyone, and we don't have a report that shows what Advancement Chairs need.
Here's the latest from Ask Andy - I think his take on Advancement in Scouting is spot on and important enough to publish here in its entirety: B-P described "advancement" as like a suntan: something you get naturally and effortlessly whilst having fun in the out-of-doors.
Nothing Ventured... Nothing Gained.. That is pretty much how the advancement program in Boy Scouts works. If you don't do the work..you don't get the rank. It's that simple. Unlike advancing in Cub Scouts where the Group works together to achieve, Boy Scouts is different in that it challenges the Scout to do the work…
2010 Rank Requirement Changes 2010 Rank Requirement Changes The centennial edition of the Boy Scout Handbook will soon be available, and with the new handbook come several rank requirement changes that will be in effect as of January 1, 2010.
Interpretation of rank advancement requirements is often an entertaining endeavor. We interpret every word we read. Right now, you are reading and interpreting these words. I was reminded of something this weekend about the Star, Life, and Eagle merit badge requirements.
0 Vote On Idea When the Troops and Packs do not have any advancement, they are supposed to send a NULL report to council saying they had no advancement. IA does not have a way of doing a submission. It would be really easy for them to have a PDF file print out an advancement…
Internet Advancement and Cub Scout Packs Advancement Reporting
1 Vote On Idea I think it would be very helpful for the Internet Advancements to include any and all awards that Cub Scout packs provide such as Sports and Academics Belt Loops and Pins, etc., since it would a selling point for the Cub Scout Pack Advancement Chairs to use because many of them…
1 Vote On Idea Could District Advancement chairs be given an account to the Internet Advancement system where they could learn about the system themselves, as well as potentially monitor unit-level advancement? The current ScoutNet reports are cumbersome and hard to understand for a volunteer and don't give too much detail.
0 Vote On Idea This may be available, but I am not sure where to find it. I would like to see a form which could be shared with my advancement chair that cross-referenced each boy's birthdate with their current rank.
Every Friday five posts from Scoutmaster worth reviewing. This week the subject is Advancement; Holding Scouts Hostage - the 13 year-old Eagle? " Now I'll go further... To artificially and arbitrarily hold a Scout back from his own advancement goals is a form of hostage-taking.
The Scoutmaster conference is the principle contact with between Scout and Scoutmaster: Why does the Scoutmaster engage in this one-on-one review? The relationship between a Scout and his Scoutmaster is important for the troop's health and for the Scout's success.
1 Vote On Idea • Den meeting plans shift majority of advancement focus from family to den • Designed to increase den retention rates through advancement & achievement • Step-by-step plans and non-themed resources for 2 den meetings per month for Den Leaders accessible via scouting.org • Advancement requirements fulfilled by February of scout year Summary: Fast Tracks on the…

1 Vote On Idea For a District Executive and their district committee to better understand the health of the units, keeping track of advancements is the pulse of the success of a district. Currently upon request the district advancement chair can ask someone in the office to run a monthly district advancment report.
Here is the " 2008-09 Tiger Cub and Cub Scout Advancement Plan " from the 2008-2009 Cub Scout Program Helps: "While much of advancement in Cub Scouting is intended to be accomplished within the family, many requirements may be met by attending organized den meetings .
Several weeks ago I did an Opportunity Knocks featuring one of the medals in our medal program. It was the Mark Herhold Camping Medal for excellence in camping. I am following up on that OK with the second one in the Medal series.
