A few things came to mind as I took a late evening walk around Melrose tonight that was different from taking a walk at Philmont Scout Ranch: 1) It is a lot more humid in Minnesota then it is in New Mexico.
A Week at Philmont Training Center (opens in a new tab)
Well, the week is now a part of history. Last week I spent my vacation at the Philmont Training Center at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. It was awesome! Sunny every day. Not a drop of rain. Great Scouters and instructors everywhere.

My first trip to the Philmont Training Center (PTC) was shortly before my 24th birthday in 1984. It was my first trip on a plane. It was my first trip away from Minnesota on my own. In fact, it was my first trip anywhere on my own.

I had been a scoutmaster for only two and a half years when I received a letter in the mail inviting me to attend the Philmont Training Center (PTC) for the Scoutmaster Fundamentals course. I had always wanted to go to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico so I jumped at the opportunity.
Making history: First campers arrive at the Summit today
Northern Tier, 1923. Philmont, 1939. Sea Base, 1980. And now: the Summit, 2014. Remember this day, because today - June 8, 2014 - the first Scouts arrive at the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base at the Summit in West Virginia.

It almost seems unfair. A few older teens and 20-somethings will work at Northern Tier, Philmont, Sea Base or the Summit this summer, and they'll get paid for it. Most of the summer staff is locked in for 2014, but the BSA's four national high-adventure bases still have a few spots they're looking to fill.

Sea Base Announces 2014 National Aquatics Workshop
The 2014 National Aquatics Workshop will be held Oct. 22–26 at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base in Islamorada, Florida. The schedule includes ample time to enjoy the warm climate and natural beauty of the Florida Keys. The conference is especially well-suited for council aquatic chairs and National Camping School staff members.
