Philmont treks, Northern Tier canoe routes, Sea Base sailing and The Summit. Crews came home with stories, gear lists and training plans, and wrote them all down.
They’re carried on Philmont’s trails and clipped to canoe thwarts at Northern Tier. You’ll find them on every Florida Sea Base trek and Summit Bechtel Reserve adventure, too. But you might be surprised to learn that Nalgene water bottles were created as lab equipment — not camping gear.
Editor’s note: This guest blog post was written by Suzanne Tiernan, communications director for the Sea Base Alumni and Friends Association. First, there was Hurricane Harvey. The news was full of damage reports and people helping each other. Then came Hurricane Irma.
Escape the chill of winter while acquiring the latest tools to help your Scout unit succeed. That’s the promise of a volunteer training conference at the Florida Sea Base. Pick from five weeklong conferences, each held in January 2018 at the BSA’s Florida home.
At first I thought it was a misprint. In several places on the Northern Tier website, participants are told not to bring waterproof boots. The Northern Tier National High Adventure Program involves canoeing around the beautiful lakes and rivers of Minnesota and Canada.

Each time I share an update about how the Florida Sea Base is recovering after Hurricane Irma, the comments pour in. Everyone wants to know how they can help Sea Base get back to doing what it does best: offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences for young people.

An aerial image, taken after the eye of Hurricane Irma passed nearby, shows the BSA’s Brinton Environmental Center on Summerland Key. All sailing captains who work with BSA’s Sea Base in Florida and in the U.S. Virgin Islands are safe and accounted for after Hurricane Irma passed over the Caribbean and the Florida Keys.

Guest post: This story of an Eagle Scout’s heroism at Philmont Scout Ranch was written by Jane Parikh, public relations manager for the Michigan Crossroads Council. Josiah Bakker isn’t a doctor, but the Eagle Scout from Suttons Bay, Mich., knew exactly what to do when a Philmont hiker showed up on the front porch of…
Photo by Evan Winter Scouting’s programs and values are best delivered outdoors. It’s been that way since the worldwide youth movement was just a twinkle in Baden-Powell’s eye. But things have changed since Baden-Powell invented the program that became the Boy Scouts of America.
It was the kind of once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ll only find in Scouting. Five Venturers from Crew 999 of Plano, Texas, spent a week in the U.S. Virgin Islands earlier this summer. The five young women, joined by three female adult leaders, sailed to beautiful beaches where they hiked, swam, snorkeled and toured historic sites.
On Wednesday, some 25,000 Jamboree participants will join the 6,000 staffers already onsite at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. Volunteer staff members, who expended their own money and vacation time to be here, have spent the past weeks, months and years preparing for this quadrennial event.
The 2017 National Jamboree will be the most-shared Jamboree in history. Scouts, Venturers, staffers and visitors will write blog updates, stream live video and post to a number of social networks, including some that were relatively unknown four years ago at the 2013 National Jamboree.
It’s hard to believe, but the 2017 National Jamboree is less than a month out. If you’re heading to Scouting’s main event in the hills of West Virginia, (or even if you’re still on the fence about making the trip as a visitor to spend a day or two at the Summit Bechtel Family National…
Dan Moore, a volunteer in the BSA’s Montana Council, has seen his share of first-rate trails for all-terrain vehicles. He even helped build five miles of ATV trails at a Scout camp in Montana. All this experience means that if you want to get Moore’s heart racing these days, your ATV trail better be world…
It could be the most epic summer in Scouting history. Ben Pycraft, a 19-year-old Eagle Scout from North Ridgeville, Ohio, will travel solo to all four BSA high-adventure bases this summer. But, true to Scouting values, the trip isn’t all about Ben.
Some have names you know: Robert Baden-Powell, Charles Lindbergh, Hank Aaron. Others are Scouters whose names are less universally known but whose impact on Scouting has been just as transformative. Their common bond: the Silver Buffalo Award — the Boy Scouts of America’s highest honor for adult volunteers.
Philmont is a land of starlit skies, aspen-covered hills and wind in whisp’ring pines. That’s how John Westfall, who wrote “The Philmont Hymn,” described the Scouting paradise in New Mexico. Westfall was a teenager in 1945 when he wrote the song.
If you have a passion for Scouting and love to take photographs, then make plans to attend the Visual Storytelling Workshop at Philmont Training Center, August 6-12, 2017. There, you’ll learn how to capture and share decisive moments in Scouting to help with recruiting and retention.
Consider for a moment how many images you come across in a single day. Add up each post on Facebook and Twitter and Snapchat and Instagram and Pinterest and … That’s the cluttered online landscape into which those of us who want to grow Scouting must venture.

Are you or your Scout (or Explorer or Venturer ) heading to the 2017 National Jamboree this summer? If the answer is “yes,” then one thing’s for certain, no matter if you’re a staff member or attendee: you’re going to be busy!
Scouting Heritage merit badge requirement 4B asks Scouts to write or visit the National Scouting Museum in Texas. As the museum prepares to relocate to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, the procedure for completing this requirement has changed. Effective April 1, 2017, Scouts seeking information for this requirement should send correspondence to Philmont at…
Fifty years, to the day, after an Eagle Scout was the first human to set foot on the moon, the Boy Scouts of America will create a permanent high-adventure base there. Tranquility High Adventure Base — the fifth jewel in BSA’s high-adventure crown — will open July 20, 2019.
We’re mere months away from the summer, aka the Greatest Scouting Season. And while it’s too early to pack your bags and load the trailer, the time is right for one essential step in summer Scouting preparation. It’s time to get your physical.
The Scouts of Troop 251 — now full-grown adults with Scouts of their own — wanted to host a reunion of their 1981 Sea Base crew. They read the Bryan on Scouting post about the Philmont crew from Tennessee that re-created a photo taken 34 years earlier, and they wanted to do the same.
If you have Scouts on your council’s 2017 National Jamboree waitlist, but not enough to constitute a full contingent, the Jamboree Team may have a solution for you: “half troops,” consisting of 18 youth members and two adult volunteers! Due to high demand in some councils across the country, those Scouts in your council who…
Whether we’re talking about Scouts or adult leaders, Boy Scouts of America always encourages personal and professional development through learning and leadership opportunities. Luckily for Scouting volunteers and professionals, we have three exciting advancement education conferences taking place at the Summit Bechtel Reserve and Philmont Training Center.
It seems like an ideal troop outing. A trip to a local ski area for a weekend of snow sports. The slopes are not too steep but still full of fun and challenge. They offer downhill and cross-country skiing trails, snowboarding runs, ice skating and tubing.

Story contributed by Kevin V. Hunt, a Scouting historian, author, camp director, blogger and speaker. For almost fifty years I have heard the lore of the magnificent Philmont Scout Ranch and have had a lifetime dream to go there. I have done almost everything in Scouting, but the illusive Philmont has been one thing that…
A Scout covering some breaking news at the 2013 jamboree. Some Scouts and Venturers will share jamboree stories with friends on Instagram and Snapchat. These 2017 National Jamboree participants will do one better, sharing their first-person jamboree experience with local news organizations back home.
Please join us in congratulating Todd McGregor, who will serve as the next director of the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia, effective March 1, 2017. Todd will succeed Dan McCarthy, who has chosen to retire following successfully serving as the director of the Summit since the spring of 2012.
