Council shoulder strips, event patches, jacket patches and the trading blankets that showed them off. Scouters shared new designs, rare finds and where each patch belongs on the uniform.
The time has come. The selling begins today. This week I am beginning to sell the Order of the Arrow Tonkawampus Lodge Patches that I wrote about a week ago. As far as I can tell, these are had to come by, especially since this lodge does not exist any longer.
If scouts in your troop or Webelos den are tired of the same old choices in official BSA patrol emblems, have them take a peak at ScoutStuff.org patrol emblems where they may find something new and fun. Maybe the BSA will regain some of the market lost to custom patrol patch manufacturers with these new…
I recently had a great visit with a couple of old Scouting friends of mine. We had not seen each other for a few years so it was great to get together for a few hours to reminisce about the "old" times and catch up on how we have all been doing.
I was a little nervous before that meeting on Monday, September 29th. It was to be my first time as acting as a cubmaster. Being a scoutmaster was no problem. I did that for 30 years. But this was a whole different age group, and a new set of parents and family members.
I know many of you collect patches, be they council strips, Order of the Arrow lodge flaps, or activity patches. One of the several patch collection I have is of the 2001 National Jamboree. I collect from that event because I attended it with nine Boy Scouts from my troop.
Maybe I should not have done it. After all, it has been 13 years since that event was held. But I had a good time and a great group of Scouts along so I will always remember the 2001 National Jamboree fondly.
It is inevitable. If you are in the Scouting program for several years you will start collecting something. It could be activity patches. Maybe it will be council shoulder patches (csp's) or Order of the Arrow lodge flaps. It might be coffee mugs or bolo ties.
This morning President Obama will officially dedicate the National September 11 Memorial & Museum . It opens to the public May 21. Two years ago this month, I blogged about a special-edition council shoulder patch that the Greater New York Councils created to remember the attacks of Sept.
Scouting family takes pilgrimage to Baden-Powell's grave in Kenya
Tracing the life of Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell takes you not only to his birthplace in London but also to Kenya, where he spent the last few years of his life. My recent trip to London and Gilwell Park , provenance of the Wood Badge training course, inspired Idaho Scouter Steve Jung to share photos and…
The season is a' coming. Soon, sons and daughters will be buying greeting cards to give or to send to their mothers and fathers as the months of May and June come near. Hallmark sales will once again go through the roof.
Yep. It is that time of year. Boy Scout councils are conducting their annual Friends of Scouting campaigns to raise money to support the local council and its program. Our district executive from the Central Minnesota Council visited our troop's court of honor on Monday, March 24th.
A merit badge sash is like a trophy case you can wear. Each tiny circle represents one of the 136 interest areas a Boy Scout has conquered. But what restrictions are placed on merit badge sashes? In what order should they be sewn on?
Drink Right, Move More, Snack Smart. Those six small words hold big power. Power to make your unit, and therefore your Scouts, healthier. Changes you employ today could have positive rewards that last Scouts a lifetime. And speaking of rewards, if you make three health-conscious changes over the next three months, you'll earn a special…
A Cub Leader in England left me a message. Tracey will be visiting Orlando, FL (I wonder what's there to visit? :-) ) in April. She has asked if any Scout Leaders in the area would like to swap patches and badges during her visit.
Only three of these patches were ever made. Baden-Powell's granddaughter sewed each one by hand using thread from a jacket once worn by James E. West." Does that patch-trading pitch make your Spidey sense tingle? In the past, you might have just laughed, said "no deal" and walked away.
Mining in Society merit badge won't officially launch until Feb. 24 at the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration's Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City. But I've been given the OK to release the merit badge patch and first two requirements today - just to give you and your Scouts a sneak peek at the all-new merit…
A troop's tradition of passing the same position patch from one Scoutmaster to the next has been forever encapsulated in a beautifully written poem. The piece, from the pen of Troop 159 Assistant Scoutmaster Nick Dorosheff, ponders the Scouting magic stored in that "small circle of tan cloth."
A reader sent this question in: What do you call the little activity patches that that circle around a larger patch "Great Activities" that goes on the red brag vest? I have quite a number of different little patches that I would like to give out to my scouts.
