Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and the Network. Posts from UK leaders and The Scout Association bring a different flavor of the same movement, with plenty to borrow for any troop.
It was not just the weather that had a great April, Scouting's month enjoyed great publicity throughout and finished with a flurry of activity over the past weekend which saw Wayne celebrating achievements in Lincolnshire, Scouting's involvement in the Royal Wedding celebrations and another fantastic day in Windsor. Oh, and a lesson in knot tying…
It was a weekend to remember for the United Kingdom's Scouts, with the Royal Wedding on Friday and the annual Queen's Scout Parade at Windsor Castle on Sunday.
Today I went to our District's St. George's Day Parade in Newcastle . We had our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts there, but this year we had something extra to add. Drums! Our Scout Troop used to have a Scout band in the 1930's to 1950's, but not a lot is known about it.
So what did you do for the Royal Wedding? My Group held a special indoor street party for all the members of the Group. The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Young Leaders and Leaders came dressed up as princes, princesses or in their best party outfits and played silly games and had a party tea.
Scouts from across the UK will celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton from their own special area of Horse Guards Parade.
A bit of a technology themed week for Wayne with a meeting with a firm of consultants advising us on our digital strategy and the launch of a My Badges app for iPhone an iPod Touch users but back to earth by learning how inner city Scouting is succeeding in Stirling.
With my finger hovering over the buy button I was thinking it is only £1.19. Then it hit me I have this information already on my phone for free why should I buy the app.
The Scout Association has launched the My Badges app which contains all the information and requirements for each badge and award from Beavers through to Network. This is an excellent idea which means we can have all the badge requirements available in our pockets on our mobile devices.
Wayne has been in Cumbria welcoming a new Scouting Ambassador, toasting Reivers District's success and remembering what it is like to be new and feeling alone...
The latest census of Scouts has revealed that nearly 10,000 new people joined the adventure in 2010. Almost half of the number – 4,330 – were girls. This number for the first time exceeded the number of boys who joined (3,796). There are now more than half a million Scouts in the UK, a 14% rise from…
Following on from the launch of the My Body, My Choice sexual health programme last week, a few thoughts come to mind. I have been reading a lot of the press coverage and the vast majority has been extremely positive.
A bit of a 'light' Scouting week for Wayne this week as the day job has taken over for a change, however he found time to catch up with Malta's Scouts, and dent his in tray.
From the WOSM's website - The Boy Scouts of Libya, around 3,500 in the town of Benghazi, are organized, and able. They find themselves called upon to take on tasks that many would expect of the state – or at least more professional, trained volunteers. That kind of puts all our little 'problems' and 'grumbles' into perspective!
Yesterday, the Scout Association launched the My Body, My Choice programme which is about sexual health. This does not mean that Beavers will be coming home with handfuls of condoms! This programme is aimed at the Explorer Scouts, and it's worth pointing out that it's not a compulsory part of the programme, but is there…
A couple of weeks ago, I was on a camp (well, one-night competition camp) where I was there merely to help out. One of my fellow leaders was running our camp and I was specifically there to help out but not interfere and run it myself – it was his turn to do it!
I came into the living room the other day and my boys were watching the wrestling on the television. The NFL couldn't come on quick enough. Anyway there was a...
Ever since my Scout Group has had its own website, we've put photos on it to show what we get up to. This is a great way to show potential new members what activities we do and, of course, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts like to see pictures of themselves doing stuff.
Scouts are well know for their eagerness to camp in odd places, so as I sit on the train returning home from a weekend in London, let me give you four interesting places where Scouts can stay, and indeed, camp in London.
Wayne dusted off his passport last weekend for a whistle-stop tour with Scouting Ireland's Chief Scout, making good use of his journey on the way and continuing his good fortune with the Irish weather.

Whilst the Big Society is the good-feeling political buzzword of the moment. Yet some councils seem to be lacking the will to live up to this ideal and are planning to use rent increases to cover the cuts that are being applied to their budgets – and this impacts directly on Scout Group, with some massive…
Specialist national support groups are not new in Scouting, the first can be traced back to pre 1948 but today, the Muslim Scout Active Support Unit are leading the way in supporting the development of Scouting within their community and across many others. So how do they do it...

A while back I borrowed an album of old postcards from my Uncle He has some postcards of the area where I (and he used to) live, as I wanted to copy them. Amongst these I found a postcard that I'd actually found for him many years ago.
The Scout Association has just launched a campaign regarding the raising of the rent paid by Scout Groups for the land that their Scout Huts are built upon. Many Group's own their own building, and have done for many years, but the land they are built upon is often owned by their local council (County…
Our new campaign to protect Groups from unreasonable rent increases has received a fantastic response as Scouts and non-Scouts alike spread the message: Don't Raise Our Rents!
A Scout is Helpful, and the people of Japan need our help. Several options exist for individuals who wish to make a financial contribution toward general disaster relief. The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army let donors designate their funds for tsunami recovery efforts.
A couple of weeks ago I went to do the CEOP Ambassador training as a follow on to the Think U Know internet safety training I did in January . Over lunch, we had the usual time to 'network' and I got chatting to a lady from the mobile phone and broadband company O2 (quite what…
A message of support has been sent to the International Commissioner of the Scout Association of Japan following the earthquake and tsunami which devastated the country.
I was reading this post by Scouter Doug in which he talks about donating to Shelterbox . This is an organisation that "provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters at the time when they need it the most".
Wayne was unable to join Sea Scout Leaders in the South East for their conference last weekend, but sent a message outlining some thoughts on Sea Scouting and the challenges we all face.

On Sunday 6 March, hundreds of leaders and young people flocked through the doors of Active8 in Kent for a day packed full of information and surprises.
This year marks the 25th Birthday of the Beaver section. Beavers have been official members of the Scout Association since 1986, but had in fact been around for some time before that. A younger section than Cubs was seen to be needed for some time and was done so in a similar way to which…
