Bryan on Scouting / On Scouting ·

The stars of a Broadway show get the credit. But the people working in the wings deserve a chunk of the praise. So this week we're pulling back the curtain to reveal someone who does his work behind the scenes so that the stars of Scouting-the Scouts, of course-can shine.

Sewing on Scout Patches

I picked up a new centennial uniform shirt this summer and have only just now put together all the patches and started sewing them on. The new unit numbers and square knots have a slick plastic backing that looks a lot like it could be ironed on.

Ten Reasons To Be A Leader (opens in a new tab)

A Scoutmaster's Blog · archived copy

Three years ago I wrote a blog post that became one of the most read posts I have ever written. It was during the time when many packs and troops were conducting recruitment drives and school nights. The article listed some reasons on why a parent should get involved as a leader in Scouting.

To Blog.. or Not to Blog... that is the question?

The Scoutmaster Minute ·

Not quite Shakespeare. . But it's all I had... Yesterday while listening to the radio at work the talk show host began a rant on Bloggers. Actually, he always rants on bloggers because he is a writer for the local fish wrapper and feels that blogging has in many ways destroyed the "Legitimate News media".

Leak-Proof Plastic Bottles for Backpacking

Scoutmaster Clarke Green ·

Here's a great tip from Trail Divas I don't know about you, but I carry a few plastic bottles for things like sunscreen, alcohol (the fuel variety, of course) and various other sundries. I learned the hard way a few years ago that in rare cases if you squeeze the bottle hard enough or somehow…

We're an awful lucky group when it comes to campfires. There's never a lack of enthusiasm for skits on Saturday night. UK Scouts, Knives, Reportage, Objectivity, Reactivity, and Equanimity

Scoutmaster Clarke Green ·

If one reads this story in Britain's Daily Mail they will get the idea that UK Scouts have adopted a hyper-reactive policy to what the Mail calls 'blade culture' that bans pocket knives. The story is followed with outraged comments predicting the end of the world.

Scouts and penknives

The Daily Mail is, as usual, misrepresentating people. This time it has picked on the Scout Movement and is " reporting " as the fight against Britain's growing blade culture intensifies, Scouts have been told not to take penknives on camping trips.

How does one control a group of Scout-aged boys? Boys are known as experts in mischief, subterfuge and misdirection. Physically they lack the gray matter required to make mature decisions. Rationality often looses out to the influence of hormones. They cannot calculate or analyze risk reliably.

When do I get results?

The Scoutmaster Minute ·

I was talking to a couple parents of Scouts in my Troop the other night when the discussion led to when they would see the results of Scouting in their sons? It made me think a little about just when Scouting manifests itself in our boys, or the boys that pass through our Troops.

If you're planning a trip to Texas, what should you see? For the boys of Troop 229 of Winamac, Ind., the answer was simple: everything! Twenty-one Scouts and 12 Scouters took off on the 11-day trip that sent the group through seven different states, with most of their time spent in the Lone Star State.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND GOAL SETTING

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea Just a thought and looking to see what others think.
