So 2010 is gone! It didn't turn out quite like I had expected for Scouting News. Personal commitments including returing from Iraq, working at a new Boy Scout Camp, moving two hours away from my "home base", and starting a "real job" kept me pretty distracted this past year.
So starts the new year. What do you have in store for 2011? Camping? Hiking? Working on Eagle? Some personal items of note in 2011: - weight loss...serious, long term commitment - career choice...my dream is to teach, I start taking the next steps towards that dream - life change...my son will graduate High School and attend Indiana…
2011 will mark the 100th Anniversary of Boys Life Magazine. I still remember as a kid being able to browse back issues at my local library. They didn't have ALL the issues from what I remember, maybe a few years …
Early Dec. 2010 Time to carve: 2 hours Finishing: 1.5 "If you can't whittle this one, your just not a whittler..." wrote Whittlin Jim. Well, sure it was easy to carve but on the other hand ... Carved from maple with the teeth carved separately and glued on later.
Mid Dec. 2010 Time to carve: ,5 hours Finishing: 1.5 My band saw blade broke and while I was waiting for a replacement to come in, I found this slide in my pile. OK, I don't need anything fancy for this one, just a dowel, my knee (to break the dowel with), thin plywood, and a…
Mid Dec. 2010 Time to carve: 2.5 hours Finishing: 2 With new band saw blade in place, I roughed this slide out and set forth carving. When finished and sanded, I hated to even think about painting this slide. I was so good looking in it's natural state.
End Dec. 2010 Time to carve: 2.5 hours Finishing: 1.5 A day off,a piece of really hard maple and a lot of fun to carve. I've been looking forward to carving this slide for a while because one of my favorite memories as a boy was the pond across the street from my house.

Our Pinewood Derby is next weekend and my den are putting the finishing touches on their cars (hopefully). I've told them they can count their cars as a Craftsman project if they did a significant amount of work on the cars themselves.
Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself." - Edward Abbey (Desert Solitaire)

Have you ever purchased spoof merit badges ? I've looked at them and laughed at them online but was concerned the quality would be poor and they'd just be a waste of money. But, this past month the Boy Scout Store provided me with a selection of patches and they are great.

One goal of the program of the Boy Scouts of America is to provide leadership training to the youth of a troop. This occurs through troop meetings, patrol leader council meetings, weekend sessions, conferences, and the National Youth Leadership course.
In this show we talk about training Patrol Leaders to work in the Patrol Method and training Scouts to camp in the Cold. Lessons that I have learned for the coming year, and a meassage about "HONOR"! Thanks for Listening, I appreciate it. Join the forum discussion on this post Share with Others:
If you have a pet, have your Cub Scout check out the Pet Care Belt Loop from the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. He will have to take care of the pet for two weeks (a positive from any parent's point of view) and learn about his pet.

Any great organization constantly tweaks and adapts its requirements to better reach its members, and the Boy Scouts of America is no exception. To that end, the BSA announced this week which requirements will change in 2011. One big item is actually more of a clarification than a complete change.
Friday's Name That Council took you on a cruise down historic Route 66, but how many of you knew which council featured the highway on its shoulder strip? Fifty-one of you, to be exact. We took all those guesses and picked one winner at random.

To earn the Boy Scout ranks of Star, Life, and Eagle, a boy has to serve in a position of responsibility for six months (four months for Star rank). But not every position of responsibility applies. Assistant patrol leader, for example, is not considered a position of responsibility in this sense.
Ok... so a Scout needs a Position of Responsibility (POR) to complete the requirements for Star, Life, and Eagle, he was not elected to a position so he comes to Mr. Scoutmaster seeking, lets say... Troop Historian. He figures, well I get to wear the patch and in 4 to 6 months I can call…

We should all be trying to keep a scout active, engaged, and growing in character, citizenship, and fitness until he's an adult - that should be the mission of every troop. So, troops basically have identical goals. The way adult volunteers strive to reach the goals, and keep the goals clearly in sight, are what differ.

Back in September I wrote about the health and safety culture that is creeping into Scouting (well all aspects of everyday life really) and how it is being taken to the extremes. The main problem being the 'where there's blame there's a claim' type culture.
We didn't expect a tremendous turnout for January tent camping, but only 3 youth (2 of them my sons) and my husband signed up. So it had to be cancelled.

Disclaimer: When you have an organization that is over 100 years old and has had 85 million+ people associated with it, there is going to be some discrepancy over who was first. New York's Hudson Valley however had the first Boy Scout Troop in the U.S…as far as I've been able to research.
