That's the clever concept behind Scouting Around , the new show from the century-old mainstay in the life of boys and the Boy Scouts of…
Working the patrol system is a challenge no matter where you are. I think that the scenes with Scouts huddled together in a dim room and feeling hopeless speak volumes! I laughed out loud when the Scouter says "A written test?!?
I recently attended an online webinar called "Baptist Scouting Ministry: Growing & Retaining Membership in Baptist Churches" that was hosted by P.R.A.Y. In the season of Wise Men, you won't find many wiser than Chris Hunt, advancement team leader for the Boy Scouts of America. Whatever advancement-related question I throw at him, he answers right away. He's one of the big reasons my Ask the Expert series has been going strong for years.
Greg sent in this Pack meeting plan for Citizenship so I could share it. The plan includes this note: A Citizenship-themed Pack meeting need not be boring. Add a little fun to your teaching, and good luck! Yours in Scouting- Webelos I Den Co-Leaders Greg, Joe and Gretchen, Pack 230, Washington, DC.
Merry Christmas everyone! It is time for my favorite Scouting themed Christmas story – The Christmas Scout . In spite of the fun and laughter, 13-year-old Frank Wilson was not happy. It was true he had received all the presents he wanted.
Happy holidays to all of you! Thanks for your loyalty, support, and friendship over the past year as we continue in our quest to become better Scout leaders. Enjoy your holiday with the ones you love. Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday
I stumbled across this today, don't know that it has ever been brought to my attention before: Navigating the Eagle Scout Service Project Information for Project Beneficiaries . It's a pretty useful looking letter that your Life Scouts can hand to the Beneficiary as they are wrapping up their Proposal approval.
________________________________________ Two years ago, instead of my usual column, my Christmas gift to you was a short story titled "A Winter Tale." It was based on a story I'd read as a boy, in a 1921 Boy Scout Yearbook passed down to me by my father, who had also been a Scout.
We spend a quiet day at home on Christmas Day. It's kind of become the family tradition. I thought about it the other night, when I was informed by my wife that we were going to the in-laws on Christmas Day.
Boy Scouts who prefer a hands on method to learning about the past should check out the Archaeology merit badge . Archaeologists are detectives who study how people lived in the past. They figure out what happened, when, how, and why.

2013 is coming to an end and as always we tend to reflect on the past year and make promises for the coming year. Wrapping up a year for me always brings hope for the next year and the excitement of what it will bring.
Scouting isn't easy to get at first, and it never has been. The "small voice" inside us says "this will be great fun, let me at it!". Our success as Scouters hinges on what we do next. John Thurman muses on how the information he provides should be used in introducing his book Pioneerng Projects…
________________________________________ It's 9:15 Saturday morning. The Scout should be arriving momentarily; he's earned Communications merit badge, so I'm hoping his counselor added to his knowledge-but not the requirements-by letting him know the best way to show respect when you make an appointment with anyone is to arrive ten minutes early-especially since this also gives you nine…
It is only five more weeks until Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs around the country celebrate B.S.A. Scout Anniversary Week. Local units will be setting up displays in their communities to promote their Scout programs. We will probably be doing the same here in Melrose.
If you are not aware of the Scouting and Autism Group based out of Vancouver, WA in the Cascade Pacific Council, you should be. It was created and run by two of the coolest people who I have come to know. This past weekend they had their first annual summit on Autism in Scouting. I
I was working on my second patch blanket today and came up to a spot for which I needed a patch. Along the edge of the blanket I have been placing patches that do not really fit with an activity I have attended.
I recently purchased new trekking poles, and being me, I did a lot more homework on the purchase than most folks looking for camping gear. I have been looking for some time (since we got back from Philmont in 2012) for new trekking poles as I bent one of my trekking poles while at Philmont.
Happy New Year! I hope you had a great holiday season and maybe enjoyed a little break from weekly Scouting, or perhaps a change of routine if your troop planned any special activities. You'll be back at it soon enough, …

I really enjoy hearing how our Scouts come up with thoughtful projects during the holidays to help people in the communities we serve. Service has been one of our legacy values for over a century, but the need continues to be strong in many communities for the support and good cheer Scouting can provide.
________________________________________ Hi Andy, I read with interest your latest column about the Scout needing to reschedule his appointment time because his mom decided to change the time she could drive him. Unfortunately, this sort of parental dysfunction is all too common.
An Opportunity Identified: Last spring, on April 12-14, a Scout Expo was held on the extensive grounds of the Myrtle Beach Speedway in Myrtle Beach, SC. for the purpose of increasing public awareness and celebrating Scouting throughout the eleven counties of the Pee Dee Area Council .

For the new Cooking merit badge, which becomes Eagle-required on Jan. 1, 2014, Scouts will prepare meals using the MyPlate food guide, understand and explain food allergies, and learn about cooking…
The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog. Here's an excerpt: The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 24,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 9 sold-out performances for that many
In less than 24 hours, 2013 will be in my rearview mirror, and 2014 will be in the windshield. As with driving a car, it does no real good to look in the rearview, but maybe only as a reminder of what happened in the past, to look out for in the future.
If you're new to the raceway this year, consider what it would mean if there was one day designed to take Pinewood Derby novices from timid to intrepid in no time! And if you're a veteran of the PWD track , this is your day to refine your design, boost your building supplies, and check out…
Before you watch Times Square's big countdown tonight, take a look at three big changes coming to the Boy Scouts of America at the stroke of midnight. Effective Jan. 1, 2014, you've got a new list of Eagle-required merit badges, a new membership policy for youth, and new membership fees for Scouts and Scouters.
It is done! That is correct, the second of my patch blankets is complete. I picked up the last patches this morning from the Scout Shop. Now I am waiting for the glue to dry. This new blanket contains 144 patches.
Decisive answers to questions about Scouting finances can be difficult to find. While researching an answer to an email question I found this PDF document: Fiscal Policies And Procedures For BSA Units dated August 2013, that provides answers to most common Scouting financial questions.
