It's Monday! The start of another workweek. The day of blogging about Scouting Memorabilia. This time I go back to the 1940′s and the Boy Scout of America handbook. I have been lucky enough to add two of these to my book collection.
I was a Boy Scout for about three and one half years. While I had fun as a Scout, and even learned a few things, I did not get very far in the advancement program. Advancement was not pushed much in my troop.
Cub Scout Pack 68 of Melrose will be holding its Blue and Gold Banquet later this month. To provide a little entertainment during the evening I have volunteered to produce a slideshow of the pictures I have taken when I attended their den meetings and the Pinewood Derby.
Here is something you do not see everyday, or even more then once in a lifetime. It is something special when four brothers in one family each receive Boy Scouting's highest award, the rank of Eagle Scout. When the four brothers are quadruplets, well, that adds a whole new meaning to special.
It is the fifth week of 100 Days of Scouting, 2011. Time to dig out that 1984 Boy Scout Handbook for another ten questions from the Scout Mania trivia book. Today's subject is General Trivia. (Keep in mind that these questions were based on the 1984 edition of the Boy Scout Handbook.
Our local community access television station, Mel-TV, and Boy Scout Troop 68 have worked together during the last 23 years to provide programming about local Scouting. Courts of honor, troop outings, and Laughs For Lunch Shows were regular features. It was a great way to keep Scouting in the public eye.
I know the 2010 National Jamboree is now a part of history, but there is a video posted by the Boy Scouts of America that packs a lot of activities into a minute long video. It is called "Dear Mom", and it is this week's featured video.
If you have been following me on this blog, you know I like to collect Scouting patches. On this Memorabilia Monday I would like to present my collection of Order of the Arrow lodge patches. Of course, I am not going to show the whole collection.
I sat with with Dakota, the troop's next Eagle Scout, this weekend to begin work on the slideshow presentation that will be shown at his court of honor next month. We quickly discovered this was not going to be as easy as past slideshows.
Boy Scouts will do a lot of things for the first time. It could be the first time tying a bowline, or the first time climbing a wall, or the first time away from home for a whole weekend. Even adult leaders will do many new things for the first time.
Wow! I never expected to see something like this posted to Youtube by the BSA. But I think it is very well done. Welcome to Patrol Z, an action comic strip to promote the next Jamboree at The Summit. This video kicks off a program by the BSA to recruit Scouts with tech savvy skills.
It is the fourth week of 100 Days of Scouting . That means it is time for another trivia quiz about Boy Scouting, based on the 1984 edition of the Boy Scout Handbook. Will you do better this week then you have with the previous quizzes?
This entry to the YouTube Tuesday Boy Scout video was actually placed online two year ago. It features Boy Scout Troop 80 singing their song about root beer to the Cub Scout Scout pack. I had never heard this before and got a chuckle out of it so I thought I would share it with…
As we enter the third week of 100 Days of Scouting , it is time to ask you more trivia questions. As in previous trivia posts, the questions come from the 1986 Scout Trivia book. Today's questions are taken from the "Basics and Badges" section of the book.
Scout Vespers is a song sung by Boy Scouts and Scout Leaders to close a campfire program, to end a meeting, or to finish an evening on a camping trip. It is a great song that is beloved my millions.
On this Memorabilia Monday I would like to present four books of my collection that share a theme of Scouting History. The first book is The Boy Scouts: An American Adventure , written by Robert W. Peterson, and published in 1984.
Adults leaders need training. I think most people would agree to that. We need to be trained so that we may properly train our youth leaders to do their job well. Call it "train the trainer" if you want to.
Once you have been a Boy Scout or Cub Scout leader for awhile you may notice something that starts to occur. Slowly and gradually, Scouting begins to take over your house. It may start with a few items in the corner of one room.
In addition to reciting the Scout Oath, Scout Law, or the Outdoor code as an opening for their troop meetings, the patrol leader council of Troop 68 has looked toward other ways to start their meetings. One code that seemed to make its way into a meeting every month or two is a little thing…
When I was a Boy Scout in the 1970′s there was no such thing as a home video recorder, so there was not a Cinematography Merit Badge. There was the Photography Merit Badge, however. I like taking pictures so I thought I would try earning that badge.
As we enter the second week of 100 Days of Scouting , I thought it might be fun to ask you all a few trivia questions and see how you do. Just like in previous trivia posts, the questions from this one come from the 1986 Scout Trivia book.
When Mike Rowe attended the 2010 National Jamboree Arena Show the Boy Scouts went nuts! At that moment he was more popular then a rock star. And to top it off, he is an Eagle Scout. Did you know that a couple of Scouts had the chance to interview him while he was at The…
Monday nights are troop meeting nights. Tonight the older boys will be reviewing things for the Personal Management merit badge. Our two younger Boy Scouts will be finishing their Tenderfoot Ranks requirements (at least, that it the plan). I am hoping that the boy who came to our meeting last week to "test the Scouting…
I collect Boy Scout handbooks. I started collecting them shortly after I became a scoutmaster. I would check out any used bookstores that I would come across to find any Scouting themed books; handbooks, history books about Scouting, fictional novels.
The Scouter Mom blog posted an article today that caught my attention, and moved me to action. The article was about Cub Scout Trading Cards, similar to baseball trading cards. She described it as a possible den or pack project.
Today is the fifth day of the 100 Days of Scouting program. What do I write about? Hmmmmm. How about a quick shout out to Boy Scout Troop 68′s Charter Organization? For over thirty years the Melrose VFW Post 7050 has supported our Scouting program.
I usually try to keep this blog in an upbeat mood, but I received a letter today from Justin Szalsa, the director of 759: Boy Scouts of Harlem, with some unhappy news this morning. One of the stars of the film, Colin "KC" Byers, has passed away.
A few days ago I wrote about a full page ad in the weekly newspaper celebrating the anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and the local Scouting program. The spread featured pictures of the local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.
Around The Scouting Campfire #22 is finally released. In this episode, Scoutmaster Steve talks about the Scoutmaster Award of Merit and a scout leader's reality check. Buttons answers questions from a few Cub Scouts from out west. Buttons also reads some feedback left on the PTC Media forums about his awesome pictures from summer camp.
If you have been following me for awhile you are aware the I have a Flickr account to which I have posted thousands of pictures featuring over thirty years of Scouting in Melrose. I also belong to several Flickr Scouting themed groups, and I am the administrator for the Flickr Wood Badge Photos group.
Cubmaster Chris and I are co-hosts of a little audio podcast called The Leaders Campfire. We love having guests on our show to talk about Scouting. Last month, we were able to interview Larry McLaughlin, the producer and director of the recently released The Philmont Documentary Collection, which is available on both DVD and BluRay.
The Melrose Beacon, our local weekly newspaper, arrived in the mail today. I was pleasantly surprised to see a full page "ad" celebrating the anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, along with pictures of the Melrose troop and pack.
Happy Birthday to the Boy Scouts of America! Today, the organization is 101 years old. That is quite an accomplishment for any organization, but it is really something for a youth group to accomplish. It is awe inspiring when you sit and think for a moment about all the boys that have been a part…
Most Scouters enjoy their cup of coffee in the morning. I never started drinking coffee. Hot chocolate was more my thing. I do, like many Scout Leaders, have a collection of Scouting themed coffee mugs. It seems that every Scout Leader I know has a collection of Scouting mugs.
When I volunteered to become an assistant scoutmaster for my local troop way back in 1980, the main competition we had for boy's time was the school sport programs. Some boys were just too busy playing football, basketball, or baseball to join the Scout troop.
I was contacted by Dave Lavell as he was creating a video for a new song he had written. He wanted to make a video using the song and photographs found on Flicker. One of the photos he chose to use was a picture from summer camp that I had taken many years ago.
In 1997, Melrose Boy Scout Troop 68 spent a weekend at Eagle Cave in Wisconsin. The boys had a great time exploring every nook and cranny within the cave, as you saw in the last video. Saturday evening, the staff invited everyone to the dining hall for a slideshow and a fun filled program.
Cub Scouts like BB guns. Boy Scouts like rifles and shotguns. Check out the shooting ranges at Scout camps if you do not believe me. They are usually very busy places. Boys enjoy shooting at targets. If you are a registered Cub Scout or Boy Scout leader you receive Scouting Magazine , an official magazine of…
It is a gadget I would like to get, but I do not have one yet. Even my mother would like to have one after playing with the one my sister-in-law owns. I am sure many of you would like one if you do not already own one.
Several years ago, the patrol leader council included a winter troop activity in their yearly program plan that became know as the overnighter. It was an all night outing that would begin at 6:00 Saturday evening and end at 7:00 Sunday morning.
Before there was the internet, dvd's, or even vhs tapes, council and district training sessions used filmstrips to assist training adult leaders. I happen to own four filmstrips used by our council in the 1980′s. The council was going to throw them in the trash until I said I would take them.
A long time ago (1997, to be exact) in a land far, far away (somewhere in the wilds of Wisconsin) a great adventure took place. The Boy Scouts of Melrose Troop 68 visited a location known as Eagle cave. They spent the weekend crawling, exploring, and getting pretty dirty as they found all the tunnels…
Last night, Tuesday January 25th, Cub Scout Pack 68 held their Pinewood Derby. Six Cub Scouts competed in the event. Each of the Cub Scouts took home a trophy. Three Boy Scouts of Troop 68 also held separate races for the fun of it.
Bryan Wendell, the writer of the Bryan On Scouting blog (formally known as the Cracker Barrel) wrote an article today that I found to be quite interesting. He wrote about Memorabilia Monday. He encouraged readers to send in a picture of something from their Scouting collection along with a short description.
I have been doing a lot of thinking about patch blankets since the last blog post. In fact, I took out my two Scouting blankets over the weekend to see if they would work. I received both blankets as gifts, one from my sister for Christmas, the other from a couple of Eagle Scouts at…
I have collected a lot of patches during thirty years as a Boy Scout leader. The council shoulder patches are alphabetically arranged in a three ring binder. So are the Order of the Arrow lodge patches and the patches from the 2001 National Jamboree.
I would guess that Capture The Flag has been a popular game among Boy Scouts since the beginning of the Scouting program. I do not recall playing it as a youth so when I discovered the game in a Scouting game book I introduced it to the troop.
The Boy Scout and the scoutmaster sit down by the campfire ring for a scoutmaster conference. The sun is shining brightly. The birds are singing. A squirrel watches them from his high perch in a nearby pine tree. During the conference the scoutmaster asks, "What is the Boy Scout Motto?"
This is fantastic news, or as Buttons the radical Boy Scout would say, "Totally awesome!" The World Jamboree will be coming to the United States this decade. According to the Boy Scouts of America Facebook page: Great news! The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve has been chosen as the site for World Scout Jamboree…
Once in a while you just gotta sit back and enjoy a good cartoon. Here is one from 1938 called Good Scouts, from Walt Disney. It features Donald Duck as the scoutmaster of his nephews' troop. They go for a hike but things do not go as planned for Donald.
