An 11 year boy walks into the meeting hall with his mother. He see's a big group of boys joking and laughing, telling stories about summer camp and some of them are frantically getting items signed off in their handbooks.
Troop 664 after the Polar Bear Swim Last week at Summer camp, my SPL and I had the chance to sit in a row-boat together for 1 hour and 12 minutes. During that time we talked about the week, leadership, attitudes, and his future.
Ok.. so fair warning.. I am going to rant in this post. I know that I try to keep this blog positive.. but this is something that I must get off my chest. Why you may be asking? Well its because what I am about rant about is a fundamental part of Scoutmastership.
Break is over, Summer camp was an awesome experience and I need to share more with you once I collect me thoughts. I will share this with you today however. Shared Experience! One of Scoutings treasures is the shared experience of your Scouts and you.
Break Time… Break Time”¦ Those few words used to be music to my ears when I worked in the hub at UPS.. Today, they mean something a little different. Remember a few weeks back when we talked about everyone needs to take a break..
I spent the better part of the weekend at Camp Pioneer. This weekend, among other things, the camp celebrated its 75th Anniversary. I received an invitation along with other Scoutmasters and folks throughout the Council, so I RSVP'd and attended.
This show is about Summer Camp and Annual planning. We talk about providing incentives for older Scouts and getting younger guys to attend. After summer camp we discuss some of the elements of the Annual Planning session and some keys to making our Scouts successful in planning and executing a great year of Scouting.
Every Troop has its traditions, customs, and special awards and recognition. I thought I would share with you a special award that our Troop does every year. This is my favorite award of the year and I take a great deal of pleasure in presenting this at our Court of Honor after Summer camp.
Now you all know that cliché's drive me a little nuts and I really hate most sayings like.. "Boys will be boys".. but in this case I want to write about boys not being able to be boys. I am no expert in all things boy, but I know what right looks like.
Today is the 104th Anniversary of Scouting! Well on or about. Scouting began with 20 boys and an experimental camp in 1907. It was held during the first nine days of August in 1907 at Brownsea Island, near Poole in Dorset, England.
OK its contest time!!! Email me your best Summer camp picture.. Scouts honor, it should be from this years summer camp.. and you should have actually gone to summer camp. This contest is an easy one.. just email me your picture.

SMMPodcast #91 – Sports, Eagles, and Chess anyone?
Show 91 is out and ready for your ear buds. In this show we carry over some topics from the blog. We talk about Young Eagle Scouts, a discussion on Sports and Scouting. I introduce the new Chess merit badge, and we wrap up with taking a break from Scouting.
I have said this so many times it is almost becoming cliche'.. but I'll say it again… TRAIN ‘EM, TRUST ‘EM, AND LET THEM LEAD! Last night the SPL of our Troop held the Patrol Leaders Council meeting. Because of a work conflict, I knew that I was not going to be able to be…
I posted a response to a post that my good friend Adam wrote on his blog. Check out his blog here . In his post, and many other posts of his and not surprisingly other Scouting bloggers out there is a recurring theme of separation between the "Scouting life" and the "Normal or Family Life".
Leaders aren't born they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal" – Vince Lombardi Every Coach I have ever met wants his team to win.
The other night at our Troop meeting I was approached by a frustrated parent. He asked why I continuously gives the boys the "run around". I asked him what he meant, even though I kind of knew where he was going.
This weeks poll follows the discussion about the Age of Eagle Scouts. Vote in the poll and leave your thoughts in the comments section of this post. I am curious to hear what you all have to say about this issue. Have a Great Scouting Day!
Monday night I had the pleasure of sitting down with a young man and talking with him about his up coming Eagle Board of Review. The Scoutmaster conference went well.. but then again, shouldn't it? After all this is his seventh conference, he has completed all the work and at seventeen years old, the Scout…
Every Camp out our Chaplains aide conducts a Scouts own service. Recently he shared this. Not new.. but worth repeating. Dear Lord, Bless all those everywhere who contribute to shape the hearts, minds and bodies of young people. Let us remember what they have taught and apply it daily.
From our Friends at BSA Internal Communications Here is a repost of a recent article that can be found on the Scout Wire. It is two new resources have been created by Membership Impact. The New Unit Retention guide and a Guide for Strengthening Organizations Through Scouting.
This is the "Tweet3″ Show. A few weeks back I asked you all to send in your questions via Twitter or email. Anything you wanted to know, Scouting related, personal… whatever. Well, this is the show that you helped make.
Funny how time fly's when you're having fun. This week has been an amazing week of Scouting and thus, I have not been on the computer much at all. The Outdoor channel is currently filming Scouts from my Troop on an amazing adventure for the series Scouting for Adventure .
I am sure that most if not all of you have a nice information board that you use to attract prospective Scouts and their families. You break it out on recruit nights and open houses, take along to community events, and generally show it off when ever the opportunities arise.
I have been working on some DIY gear lately.. not really because I have the need to make my own stuff, more because I wanted the challenge of making it. I took an old synthetic sleeping bag that was rated at 10 degrees.
The results are in for the "What do you do at Summer camp" Poll. And it looks like 68% of you participate in Adult Programs. 26% of you just hang out with a good book and pretty much the rest of you get in the Scouts way (6%).
Here is a quick review of a new peice of gear I just threw into my pack. Let me know what you think. Leave feedback, comments or suggestions. If you have gear that you would like to see reviewed.. let me know. Enjoy the video. Have a Great Scouting Day!
The last line of the Declaration of Independence is often over shadowed by the rest of this powerful document. As the Declaration begins, our founding Fathers set down a path that was treasonous to the crown. As they, point by point outlined the reasons to declare Independence from the crown, they were driven deeper and…
How many times do we see our Scout try to take the "easy way out"? It is a natural thing to seek the path of least resistance. Pop Tarts rather than cooking a breakfast, pre fab meals rather than doing the prep work, planning shorter hikes rather than get to the beauty of a hike…
I think it is important to have "Hero's" in life. People that we look up to or try to learn from chapters of their lives. William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt is one of my hero's. His love for the Scouting program drove him and in the end elevated him to a father of Scouting in…
In this show we talk about Troop Junior Leader Training, Delivering the Promise of Scouting, and Finding that life of serendipity from my hero Green Bar Bill. Leave me feedback, drop and email, or leave a comment letting me know what you think.
In the old Scoutmaster Handbooks, there was always at least a chapter on what makes up a boy and how that boy grows, learns, and develops. I think it is important to know these things as a Scoutmaster. We work with boys becoming young men and each is different.
I am not sure if you all are aware yet.. but there is a website to help you and your Scouts to get and stay Fit. I figured after my last post, that there should be some solutions offered as well.
So says the BSA… Now before I get hate mail.. Raise your right hand in the Scout sign and repeat after me.. "To keep myself physically Strong, Mentally Awake, and Morally Straight." In a minute I want you to watch this video.
The Promise of Scouting and the Journey to Excellence
I am often asked about the "Promise of Scouting". In the title of the Blog and Podcast I declare that I have just trying to help deliver the promise of Scouting. To help you understand what I am talking about when I say this let me show you where I got it.
The balanced Score care approach is nothing new, it has been floating around organizations for some time now and provides a balanced view for organizational performance. Who looks at this? Well really you do. As much as some would like t0 think that Councils and District level leadership are actively engaged in what goes on…
Ok.. so the first post on JTE has been met with some resistance. Let me just say this, then I will move on. As a Scoutmaster or Committee Chair, you need to have a way to measure the success of your unit.
Now before I even get started on this.. let me tell you that as much as I like patches.. this is NOT about a little patch. This is about measuring success. In the world that I live in, working for the Big Brown, I am totally in tuned to everything being measured.
Summer camp is a fantastic experience for the Scouts of your Troop. But that does not mean it can't be fun the adults that go too. Each year we take our Scouts to camp. We limit the amount of Adults, after all, this is a program for the Scouts, but the three or four adults…
The results of the "Elections" poll are in.. 75% responded that they hold elections every 6 months while the other 25% hold annual elections. There was a lot of email and comments on this one. Thank you! As promised I told you that I would weigh in on this after the poll.
Ahh… yes we do need patches.. we love patches… are you kidding me? I have been in Scouting since I was 7 years old. I have always "collected" patches from my Scouting experiences, places I have been, camps, councils etc.
Father's Day Poems Walk a Little Slower Daddy "Walk a Little slower, Daddy." said a little child so small. I'm following in your footsteps and I don't want to fall. Sometimes your steps are very fast, sometimes they're hard to see.
This weeks poll asks the question about Unit elections. Do you hold them annually, Bi-annually? Do you hold them when ever the need arises? How do you do unit elections in your unit? Well…. Lets hear it. Leave your answer in the comments section so we all can get a feel for how unit elections…
SMMPodcast show # 88 is out and ready for your ear buds. I need to apologize for the audio quality of the first part of this show.. The F150 studio was louder than usual. In this show we talk about Stoves and other Stuff including a great Ordeal Weekend with our Lodge.
There are many out there that feel that there is no place for electronics in Scouting.. no phones, ipods, or gps units. Well I tend to disagree with those folks, but with this caveat, training, skills, and appropriate time and place.
