That's where you will find adventure and success. Life is hard enough for an 11 year old with out standing on the edge of a cliff. But that is where the Scouts of Troop 664 find themselves every year when we climb at Smith Rock State Park in Central Oregon.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution…" a great approach to being a part of an organization. You truly are either part of the problem or part of the solution. When we teach our Scouts how to lead, being part of the solution is the driving force that they need…
Character is something that I talk about a lot with the Scouts of my Troop. It is a subject worth discussion often with these young men that are influenced by popular culture, peers, and sports figures. Now, if you have read this blog for any period of time, you know that I am a huge…
Everyone that is a volunteer or has ever volunteered has heard the quote "One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like, but the world may be…
When I became a new Scoutmaster a good friend took me aside and gave me some great advice. He told me that its all about the Troop program. We were building a Troop from scratch and so he assured me that if we built a great program, the Scouts would come and we would have…
I just took a peek at the current results of the Poll on Training… and I think it is right where I thought it would be. "Leaving us wanting More". We talked a lot about training at the annual meetings and just how bad it needs to be upgraded and changed.
Welcome back to this weeks SMMPodcast. This week I share some thoughts about the 2011 Annual Meetings of the Boy Scouts of America. It was a fantastic experience. This weeks Podcast is sponsored by The Other Scoutmaster's Handbook . A couple take home points from the meetings.
First of all I want to thank all of you for reading the blog. I want to especially thank those of you that have recently subscribed to the blog and podcast. We just saw a big bump in "membership". That's great and thanks.
Memorial Day has always been a day that our family observed beyond the BBQ and long weekend event. My Dad was a career soldier and served in Vietnam, and having lost many of his friends there, Memorial Day had special meaning.
Well, its been a few days since the last post, and not for a lack of trying or ‘want to' rather the National Meetings of the BSA had my attention. Over the next few posts I will be discussing some of the things I picked up, but for now I just want to say thanks…
The symbolism is great in the Boy Scouts of America, great tools for reminding us to do what is right. When describing the Scout Badge a Scout needs to explain the major components of it. The top of the Scout Badge for example symbolizes the Point of a compass.
A young man sits across from you at a table, he is new to the Troop and seeking that first badge.. the Scout Badge. He sheepishly asked for a Scoutmaster conference, and now he is stepping off on the Trail to Eagle.
Yesterday was a great day. The world did not come to end and I had a great time with a great group of kids. Yesterday I was shown just how special the kids of today are. My youngest son is on a Relay for Life team.
And I feel fi ne… I can't seem to get that REM song out of my head today… I wonder why? In the wake of all the hubbub surrounding today being the end of the world I thought it interesting when my youngest son asked the question about whats going to happen.
That point in the Scout Oath that is often over looked.. said real fast to get to "Mentally Awake.. Morally Straight". Yep, I'm calling you out! But just as the old adage says.. when you point a finger, three are pointing back at you.
Thanks for participating in the last Poll… It looks like there are a lot more Eagles out there than the rest. Followed by Beavers and Bobwhites! This time we ask about your High Adventure favorites! Let us know what you think. Have a Great Scouting Day!
In this show I share some reflections on the past Wood Badge Course and of a young man that is being presented his Eagle Award. This weeks Blog Roll is Bobwhites Blather . I really enjoy this blog and encourage you to check it out!
I am shooting you this link to a great post on another Scouting Blog. He hits the nail on the head with this one and its worth sharing. I would love to repost the whole blog.. but go visit this site. Bobwhites Blather Have a Great Scouting Day!
Today marks the last day of the second 100 days of Scouting blog campaign. But as I thought about it, I remembered back to what my good friend Mike Walton who at the beginning of the #100daysofscouting blog campaign wrote about the first one.
Values, Mission, Goals…. at the fore front of my mind right now as I assist a group of new Wood Badgers in the working of their tickets… Tickets? In Scouting, if you are not familiar with Wood Badge then this is a foreign concept.
Home from the most emotionally charged Scouting event I have every seen. Wood Badge course W1-492-11 has left Gilwell and are now working their tickets. The ax has been pulled from the log and the staff is either home or on their way home.
Here is a quick video on me getting the Hammock ready for my week up in the Oregon Coast Range for the 2nd session of Wood Badge. I removed the stock Hennessy suspension from the hammock and replaced them with Whoopie Slings.
When I was a young Scout there was no better moment at Courts of Honor than being able to pin the "Mom's" pin on my Mom. Having earned a rank and being able to share that with Mom was a special thing.
Recently I got into a discussion with another blogger about numbers, subscriptions, readership etc. He is all wrapped up in the "numbers thing" and extremely passionate about boosting his ratings, getting more readers, and taking over the internet, ok so I made the last one up, but needless to say he does in fact have…
Tonight I was invited by the Patrol that I am the Troop Guide for in W1-492-11 for their Patrol meeting between sessions. They held their meeting at one of the Patrol members place of employment, Coffee Bean International. It was a neat meeting as they embodied the Scouting Spirit of learning something new.
The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been. - Henry Kissinger Boys join Scouting for a variety of reasons, mostly because their parents think it is a great idea, but then they come to the realization that Scouting is fun and that hanging out…
Many of you that follow the Scouter gang on Twitter and at PTCMedia know my good buddy Scouter Adam. Well, Adam got stuck in the F150 recording studio with me on our way home from Wood Badge. This is our chat on the way home.
You can not escape the Wood Badge experience without hearing "Game with a purpose" at least 100 times and the reason is that all of it is a Game with a purpose. Scouting is a Game with a purpose and so when you do Scouting you should always play the game.
Well its been about a week since the last post.. Gilwell called, and I answered! I got back last night from a week out on the Oregon Coast for Wood Badge W1-492-11. It was the first session of the course and my first shot at staffing Scouting's best training course.
There are many attributes that are common to all that lead. Business leaders, Military leaders,Pastors, Scout Leaders.. you get the point. Of those attributes there are 4 that all leaders need to have to be effective in their leading toward the High Performance team.
Yesterday I received an email from a fellow named Thom in PA. I won't post his email here, but the jest of it was that he challenged the idea that the Boy Scouts of America should be inclusive of all religion.
Well I have officially lost count on the #100daysofscouting blog count. I have been trying to get a good blog post daily, but we all know how that goes. Life gets in the way and there is always a lot of Scouting to do.
The BSA has a very good Emergency Preparedness program. It encourages our Scouts and Adults alike to plan and prepare for an emergency. You can read more about it at www.scouting.org. One of the important aspects of the Emergency preparedness program that I find valuable is the extension beyond the family and house.
What do you do when you have Scouts that do want to advance in rank? What about not wanting to go to Summer camp? What do you do when they just show up and hang out? These are age old questions that I hear over and over again at Round table and in discussions with…
In this show we explore ways that we can encourage our Scouts to find their faith. A Scout is Reverent, so how do we help them practice it? In this show we also start our new segment Blog Roll! This show is sponsored by the Other Scoutmaster Handbook Enjoy the Show!
I started a new segment on the Podcast this week.. Its called BLOG ROLL! This weeks featured blog is Scouting in the Great Outdoors By Scouter 945. You can about it in Show #83 coming out tomorrow. I am following this blog in particular as I want to see the prep work they do to…
It seems like playing catch up is the norm these days on the blog, I think once this Wood Badge course is over things may settle down just a bit. So let me share with you whats been going on since the last post on Thursday.
Have you ever seen those TV shows where they have hidden cameras, trying to either catch someone doing something stupid or trapping them in a situation they have to explain away? They are great testaments to how people act and what they will do.
This is Show #82 and I am joined by our District Commissioner and our Program Vice Chair in a discussion about Youth Protection and how it effected recharter. Listen in and then weigh in by leaving a comment, feedback, or a voicemail to the SMMVoice mail 503 308 8297.
Once again, time has passed me by.. I suppose it is true what they say about time flying when you are having fun. So here is a quick update, I am not to sure that anything inspirational or motivating will come of this, well maybe.
I had a nice talk the other night with a friend of mine, a long time Scout and Scouter. I enjoy our talks because they typically get to the heart of what Scouting is all about. We were talking about the Aims of Scouting, you know… Citizenship, Character, and Fitness..
Recently Skynews reported in an article "10 things that we can learn from Japan" I thought this was interesting, because beyond the obvious it is a look in the mirror, a way to judge ourselves and the culture in which we are raising our kids.
In the new Guide to Safe Scouting there has been a rule change on allowing Patrols to camp alone.. without Adult supervision. This was always a great part of my Scouting experience when I was a youth and it is a bit heart breaking to see that the BSA has changed this.
In this show I sit down with District Trainer and avid Backpacker Ken Hall and discuss planning the 50 miler. Lots of great information for planning your next long trip, or short trip too. Leave feeback or drop an email.
This weekend I participated with our District Training team for Scoutmaster Outdoor skills and ITOLS. We had a great group of students (learners) this weekend, the split was about half and half, Cub Scout leaders to Boy Scout leaders. I am a big fan of Training.
I am often asked about how we established the Scout led troop and many questions go start with, "What about the 10 and 11 year olds.. they are not ready to lead". I think that too many Scoutmasters view Scout led as a very fixed leadership model and forget to account for age, experience and…
