Tonight before I left work I popped into the restroom to clean up, wash my hands etc”¦ I opened the door to find a sink over flowing and about 6 inches of water on the floor. One of the sinks had been plugged with paper towel and the sink left on.
Well not exactly the title to that song.. but its raining here in the great NW and I want to get out and work with my new Hennessy Hammock. My oldest son and I bought Hennessy Hammocks yesterday. For those of you that went to Jambo..
If you are reading this.. well then you have properly been directed to the new home of The SMMBlog. I moved the domain to wordpress for various reasons, but the bottom line is it is working. Much of the "old stuff" is moved, but please be patient while I play with themes and widgets and…
by Bryce Davis, Assistant Scoutmaster Troop 664 We're on the Big Screen... Well – for a few seconds, anyway. Our new advertisement was delivered to the nice folks at Mt. Hood Theatre in downtown Gresham today. Manager Brenda says it will be dropped into the tray tonight.
I was listening to a podcast the other day, it was pretty political in nature, but the guest on the show said something that I thought was pretty interesting. Now, I am not going to get into politics here. This is NOT a political Blog.
Show number 80 is out and ready for your ear buds. In this show we discuss the questions we posted in the Serve to Lead entry. Join me as we open up the questions and talk about how they make every leader a success.
Last Night at our Troop meeting we talked about leadership, among other things. I shared with the Scouts some questions that they need to ask themselves in the context of leadership. Now, these questions come from a book called Serve to Lead , by James Strock.
Unlike the Jamboree experience, which yielded a count down to the event (which everyone seemed to love), putting together a great Troop, heading out to the East Coast for tours and a fantastic week of the greatest single Scouting event I have been to, and memories for a life time.
The other day I was out and about and I ended up in the check out line at a local store. There was an elderly gentleman in line ahead of me waiting patiently as the check out clerk seemed to be struggling a bit.
We are all in Scouting for one reason or another. Some of us have been in Scouts since we were in Cub Scouts, our parents and grandparents were in Scouts and we have just grown up with the program. For others, it was an invite at a join night that fell out of the lunch…
#100daysofscouting – Time to brag on the boys a bit
Putting together the work sheet for the Top Troop Award for our District has been an eye opener this year. The Troop is bigger and 2010 was an incredible year for all of us in Scouting. Now, I put this together a couple weeks ago, but finally got to email it to the committee tonight.
Last night my son and I attended the "Touchdown Club" meeting at the High School. The Touchdown club is sort of like the boosters, but focuses 100% of its energy to the Football program. This is brand new at the School and is in its formation stages.
Yesterday was a fantastic Scouting Day! First and foremost it was Monday, so we had our weekly Troop meeting. The Troop meeting started like most others but then took a turn for the better, a Scout camp running through the door about 5 minutes late.
I am back from the Wauna La'Montay Lodge Rendezvous of the Order, an annual event our lodge hosts to celebrate its accomplishments, recognize the fantastic arrowmen of the lodge, and of course..have a lot of fun. Friday was an interesting day as most of you that are no longer living in caves knows..
Last night at Round table we got into an interesting discussion about many of the Scouts in our Troops and the jest of the conversation was how neat it was to watch these boys become men. You see our district is huge but many of our Troops are close enough together, and many of us…
The Internet has done amazing things for the Scouting community.. well no duh.. you are on it reading this or got it through the RSS feed.. But seriously.. the Internet has done amazing things to bring the World Brotherhood of Scouting into our homes.
The week on the SMMPodcast we talk about Den Chiefs and what an amazing asset they can be for your Troop. I am not going to blog a bunch about it.. listen to the show ! I will tease it just a bit to say that when your Troop uses Den Chiefs you have better developed…
This week at the Troop meeting we worked on Rifle Marksmanship. We will be shooting at our next camp out, so in order to spend more time sending bullets down range and not sitting in a class, we brought the rifle in to the meeting and worked on all of the basics in our meeting…
Today the Scouting Blogosphere has been pretty quiet, Been working on the next podcast. We are going to be talking about Den Chiefs, training Den Chiefs, and how Den Chiefs benefit your unit. Well we are talking about Den Chiefs anyway...
Right after I posted the last entry to the blog I looked over to the achieve section over on the left column. I rarely pay attention to it unless I am looking for something. But what I noticed and it is no surprise, but since we started participating in the #100daysofscouting activity, the number of…
The position of the Junior Assistant Scoutmaster is one that I find debated frequently. The debate ranges from what rank he needs to be to the age he needs to be and then as to what his job is within the Troop.
As Scout leaders we teach our scouts to learn and develop skills that will last their life times. Even in the mission statement of the Boy Scouts of America it states that The Mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by…
Even though we are not heading south to Philmont till 2012 it is never to early to get ready. Our deposits are in and we have secured our 2 crews, the excitement is building! The other night we met with many of the Scouts going, we are going to start our preparations this summer, more…
Last night I participated in a Scoutmaster Conference for a new Scout. It was obviously his first Scoutmaster Conference as a Boy Scout and he was trying to earn his Scout Badge. Here is why I am posting this... The excitement that he had was over the top and its not just him, but I…
Courtesy –noun 1. excellence of manners or social conduct; polite behavior. 2. a courteous, respectful, or considerate act or expression. 3. indulgence, consent, or acquiescence: a "colonel" by courtesy rather than by right. 4. favor, help, or generosity: The costumes for the play were by courtesy of the local department store.
If you are not following the 21 or so Scouters that are journaling the #100days of Scouting.. Then I would throw a friendly reminder to do so. Doug Metz is a Scoutmaster, I got to meet him at Jambo this last summer..
Earlier this year I talked about increasing the community as one of my Scouting goals for the year. I receive a fair amount of emails from listeners of the Podcast and readers of the Blog, and I really love to hear from you.
Yeah.. along with a bunch of online (some close, some far) Scouting friends we are trying real hard to maintain a daily log of our "Next" 100 days of Scouting. I have been pretty good at going about it.. but as activities like a Troop camp out etc get in the way..
Tuesday February 22, 2011. Founders Day and the Anniversary of my marriage. Founders Day. Today we celebrate our Founder, Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell. Born on this day in 1857. Number 7 of 10 Children. Chief Scout of the World, founder of the greatest peace movement the world has ever seen.
The harder the challenge the sweeter the reward.. I grew up with that little phrase deeply embedded in my brain and this weekend the Scouts of my Troop learned a bit about it. Friday night we camped at the trail head of Barlow Pass Road and the PCT.
Cross my heart and Hope to die" was second only to "Scouts Honor" when I was a kid. And you know those words meant something and no matter who you were.. Scout or Non Scout.. those words stuck like glue to the person making the proclamation.
There has been a lot of discussion lately about how much time and the toll Scouting takes on the life of a Scouter. And while this is true in some cases, I think it is all about priorities and taking the time to stop and smell the roses.
In an effort to learn something new every day I have been a quest to learn more about some merit badges. I have a sash that belonged to my Father in Law. The merit badges are mostly Type D and E merit badges, so they range from 1942 to 1960.
Day 7 of the #100daysofscouting project ended at our Troop meeting last night. Final preparations for this weekends camp out and Scoutmaster minute that left many of the Scouts wondering if they were ever going to be Eagle Scouts. Ok let me explain...
Well really nothing much today... spent a great day hanging with the family. Did a little work on the blog, but really not a Scouting day. I posted earlier today about the FISH program. I really encourage you to follow those links and see what they have to offer.
Days 4, 5, and 6 were eventful and plenty of good Scouting Moments... Unfortunately I have not taken the time, till now to sit down and jot down the thoughts... well I am going to claim that time and space was the reason.
I received a phone call yesterday from one of my Scouts.. the name is not important, neither is his age, he is a Scout and has enough confidence in his Scoutmaster to give him a call when he needs an answer to life's pressing questions.
Another Great Scouting Day. Round Table tonight was fun, I made an announcement for the up coming Wood Badge course, answered some questions regarding Wood Badge. Promoted the 2013 National Scouting Jamboree. Assisted in the Boy Scout break out.. we talked about planning and preparing for a 50 miler.
Patches have been a long lasting tradition in Scouting.. not only are they fun to trade, sew on a patch blanket, or wear on a jacket or uniform.. they are the colorful story of Scouting. Each patch designed to represent the area, the event, the flavor of a time.
There are a group of Scouters out there that have real nice Blogs (and Podcasts).. they have individually yet collectively decided to keep a running log of their activity that celebrate the next 100 days of Scouting... after all, just because it's not the centennial anymore does not mean we should not kick off the…
Its Wednesday, to many in my neighborhood all that means is it is garbage day, hump day, or just another day... But today is another opportunity for me to learn, grow, and live the Oath and Law. Its going to be tough, I know, but by tonight hopefully I will be able to lay my…
Nope.. not a class at Scouting University.. its the 101st Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Over the hump and into the future. I had such a great time celebrating the 100th Anniversary last year. Jamboree was terrific.. but now we are heading into the future with the BSA.
Here is something I picked up from my Wood Badge course back in 2005. I stumbled on it again the other day as I was going through course material in preparation for the upcoming Wood Badge course... thought I'd share it.
Today is Scout Sunday .. yes there is also a big Football Game on today.. but before kick off.. just remember that a Scout is Reverent. "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.
It's been a busy week in my neck of the woods, but a great Scouting week that ended with a Scout in my Troop participating in his Board of Review for the Rank of Eagle Scout. I had the pleasure of sitting in on his board and remaining relatively quiet.
Just a quick note on the great camp out we had this last weekend. There were three things that really stand out as the hallmark of this last Troop camp out. And before I go further, I think that each and every camp out, event, project etc.
Snow shoeing is a great Scouting activity. Giving you the ability to go where you can't wearing a pair of boots. Snow shoes open up trails and adventures that make memories. But there is a lot of confusion when picking the right pair.
One of the biggest obstacles in winter camping with Boy Scouts are worried parents. The Scout is being placed in a "High Risk" situation, and parents get the willies when they are faced with the prospect of their little precious getting frost bite and having his cute little nose fall off.
Last night at our Troop meeting we had two groups of Webelos Scouts pay the Troop a visit. When their leaders called to set up a "Good time" to do their Troop visit, I gave them my standard response... we meet on Monday's...
A few years ago when I started this blog it was all about getting some of my Scouting ideas written down and maybe just maybe helping some one out with an idea or two. I blogged a lot that first year and the second year too, but then it tapered off a bit, I never…
