Yup, it's true… At the end of this month, I will only be a Scoutmaster for Troop 1363. It may be short-lived, but nonetheless, I will no longer be an Assistant Cubmaster for Pack 4363. Yesterday, while I was at Cub Scout College, I got to see some old friends and catch up on things.
I really don't know where to begin. I haven't been blogging lately, due to the hectic schedule that I have had pretty much since the beginning of summer. A lack of True North shows, a lack of Scout Nation shows, a lack of Twitter, Facebook and blogging.
I got a message the other day from a reader and listener who was a bit disappointed in my lack of posts and podcasts. Well, I am really sorry. I really hate to make excuses, but I have been really busy, and I really haven't been able to wrap my brain around recording a show…
I haven't been hitting the blog lately, my head has still been swimming and I really can't contain my thoughts. I have so many thoughts going in and out of my head lately, that I haven't been able to concentrate on one thing without jumping to the next….SQUIRREL!
Today, in a little over 2 hours from now, I will be on my way to Bear Paw Scout Camp…a first for me, the Scouts and for my troop. We are a relatively new troop, signing our charter on February 3rd, 2010.
If you don't know it, I was never a Boy Scout. I never got a chance to go to summer camp, I never got a chance to do Scoutcrafts or learn ScoutSkills…I learned outdoor skills from my Grandpa and from other resources.
Today was an odd day…I did my usual tour of the blogs and other sites. I am not going to point out the exact links where I ran into my conundrum, but today just seemed to be filled with a few more scouters who don't get it.
So, pardon my mini rant from yesterday, but one of the things that bother me with the program is the "me" attitude that some scouters have. It's not about them…it's about helping the youth, those same youth that will be our future leaders.
Getting onboard with the Scout Nation Fit Club, I have decided to dust off my bike and start riding that a bit…seems as though it's accumulated about 10 years worth of dust and the pedal was broken. I took the bike to a local bike shop to have the pedal repaired, and they had it…
It looks as though the Twitter CSP Swap is starting to gain a little steam. I have received 3 patches from around the country…one from JTHoppe , one from OKCScouter and one from SM_Phil . I know that there are more coming, and I am really happy to see that we are still able to do something…
Wow, it's been a couple weeks since the end of the 100 Days of Scouting, and the beginning of 100 Days Strong. I have been doing pretty well, and I am pleased to say that I am 1/5th on my way to my goal…only 79 more pounds to go and I can make Philmont weight…it's…
I saw the tweet go out, so I thought that I would repost this blogpost from earlier this year I like patches, and I got inspired for a new idea. I have seen pictures of different Council Shoulder Patches on Twitter and Facebook.
And that's a wrap… In a couple of senses… First, the 100 Days blog…it's over for me, not blogging, but blogging everyday for 100 Days. I will try to post regularly, but for now, I will be scaling it back.
OK, so almost everyone else has finished up their #100 Days, but I started late, so I will finish a couple days after everyone else. Today, the #ScoutNationFitClub morphed into the #100DaysStrong…not that it matters, but it seems that some scouters from Twitter-land have decided that Dunlops should no longer be a part of the…
I got to looking more into JTE, the Journey To Excellence. I am sure that I am the last one in the world who doesn't really know what this is, but I decided that it's time for me to figure it out, if not at least investigate it a bit more so that I can…
Not a lot of motivation today…I don't know why. Sonia is actually off, but for the most part, non-productive, non-scouting day. I perused some scouting information, and looked at the PowerPoints for this weekends training, and I would imagine that I should do a little more to prepare myself for the training.
Service to others is a part of the scouting program, but I finding more chances outside of scouting. Last night, I did some service for my charter organization. Well, it's the troop's CO, but I am also a member of the Moose Lodge, and one of it's officers.
The past 3 days have been a whirlwind to say the least. It seems that with being unemployed, that I am making scouting my full time job, and pouring all of my time into it. Not that I mind, but I think about it, and do scouting all the time.
Now I can't hardly wait…the first of the communiques from the Wood Badge Staff…nothing major, but it's the first of many letters that I will be getting leading up to Wood Badge. The letter outlines what needs to be done, primarily needing a physical and sending contact information, along with the times and simple "ground…
Not a lot in the way of actual scouting happened, but I did put my entire archives of True North here on the blog. It should make it a bit easier to listen to all the shows right from here.
Well, the 100 Days Blog will be done on the 20th of May…it's been a goal of mine to blog more often and I can say that with certainty, I have. I started to do daily posts, but then started to fall short.
Well, I am just going to post when I can…too many thoughts running through my mind to put them into words and post them here. I have been a pretty hearty blogger at times, other times, not so much…and the task of doing the 100 Days has kept me a bit more on task.
I have had plenty of stuff going on this week, just really couldn't put things into words. Frustration with your surroundings has a tendency to do that to you. I have been out of work since January 1st, but I am getting calls about positions…just not offers or start dates.
Not a lot has been happening over the course of the weekend. Actually, I only did a brief update on the pack website and that was about it. Sonia is off this weekend and it is Easter weekend. I have remained pretty quiet on Twitter, but everyone have a great day.
Who is your CO? Does a good CO really matter? I can say that it does. When my son and I first joined the pack, we were chartered with the local school district. Then less than a year later, we lost that charter (separation of schools and scouting) and we were looking for another CO.
The Redcoats are coming, the Redcoats are coming!"… Not really, it was the British, but we all knew what Paul Revere was talking about. I am following up with my post from yesterday…I got a lot of feedback, and glad to see that I do have followers.
Bring your "A" game…that's what I was talking about with a Scoutmaster Bryan. We have a few issues with our district. In our district, we have what is commonly called the "old war horse" patrol…you know these guys. They are the ones that wear the red, wool jackets, have all kinds of awards and expect…
I am so bad about writing, or am I? I have written more in the last 2+ months than I have written over the last 2+ years. I have had some good words of wisdom, given some good advice and have gotten a lot of positive feedback.
Tonight's troop meeting wasn't what I had hoped for…smaller turnout. When 5 out of 11 aren't there, it sure makes a difference. We started working on lashings and I didn't really do a good job explaining it… The scouts got it and did well with it, but I think it was something that they didn't…
Kind of a slow day, so maybe some words of wisdom or something like that… Read twice, reply once…I am usually really good about making sure that I have a good grasp on a topic before I make a comment.
Not a lot of scouting on Sunday, committee meeting, done in about 45 minutes…new record for our pack, and yes, we had attendance. Discussed upcoming pack meetings and getting ready for summer camp…I also mentioned to some of the parents that they should encourage stuffing money into their scout accounts, as we in the troop…
Gonna be another 3-post day…I know that today isn't over yet, but I don't know if I will be around to post anything about today, and the fact that the highlights of my day probably happened already…so yea, this post will include today's info.
Still coming down from the booyah hangover…We still don't have the final tallies, but we should be in the realm of profiting about $1000. That means a good chuck of change that would go into the scouts accounts, right around $80 each.
Today started off with scouting…and booyah. Ethan and I got up, dressed and went down to the Moose Lodge to see if anyone who would be eating breakfast would want to buy some leftover booyah. We sat at a table, sold 2 containers, and had breakfast with our CO, which was nice.
Sorry for the lack of posts the last couple of days, but I have been a tad busy with troop stuff. You may or may not have seen my tweets or Facebook posts about booyah…no, not the slang term that Stuart Scott uses, but a dish made here in Northeast Wisconsin.
The tail wagging the dog. That's how I used to see our pack being run. The Cubmaster was trying to do what the scouts and families wanted to do, but the committee deemed it necessary to tell him what he was and wasn't going to do.
I have been wondering about my legacy as a Cubmaster. I haven't been in the role of CM for almost 4 years…yes, I am an Assistant CM now, but it's really not the same. When I came in as CM, I implemented a lot of different programs….summer camp, ISAs (individual scout accounts), more engaging pack…
Today has been a quiet day when it comes to scouting…we have our troop booyah coming up on Saturday, and are readying all the goodies that go into it. With any luck, we should do pretty well, and that will help offset the cost of camp and gear.
OK, really liking the new digs over here on WordPress…yes, I am a Google pureheart, but I figured that if Jerry liked it, I can like it too…. Which brings me to that point…I am Jerry's disciple. I don't want anyone to think that I can't think for myself, but I ask him for advice…
Day 44 – Even though I blog and podcast about Scouting, I am by no means an expert…I just know what works for me and like to write, blog, tweet and broadcast about it. With that said, I frequently ask for advice from other fountains of Scouting.
OK, so for today's post, not just a catch up of the last 2 days. On an upcoming episode of True North, I am going to talk about what I like to call, the "Cubmaster Team"… As you know, I am a Scoutmaster for Troop 1363.
Monday – nada lada stuff going on, move along, nothing to see here. Tuesday – attended the Tiger meeting with the Cubmaster, squared the leaders up on their required training. Braced for snowstorm of the year. Had a great chat with Jerry , who gave me some advice on how to deal with a couple of hot-spots in…
I thought that this was really cool…I have been a fan of Jason's since he did a show with Jerry, but I was looking back at some of his old posts…check his site for any other backpacking tips Gear Talk with Jason Klass: My DIY Pulk Project: Part 1
I said that I would post about the issues that I had at the Pinewood Derby…sorry, that's just too much negative and this isn't the place for it. It had nothing to do with scouting and to write about it would just be counter-productive.
I just couldn't get to writing anything...not that nothing has been happening, but it's been one of those weird weeks. OK, let's recap. Day #30 - Pinewood Derby - overall, success. My night? bad, details to follow in additional post Day #31 - Fallout from the Pinewood Derby, not all good, not all bad Day #32 - Not a…

Tonight, I got together with the Cubmaster of the pack, and another CM from a pack in a city about 30 miles to the south of Green Bay. I helped this CM awhile back in using Google Apps to make a pack website, and he repaid the debt with bringing his pack's PWD track and…
Realized that none of the boys have completed the BSA swimmer test. What does this mean? No boating No canoeing I think that I better get prepared for "Shawn? Can you call over to the high school pool and help us out with that?"
Many of us stay in touch with "the rest of the world" by using Twitter. What you're doing, what you're making, who you're with. One thing that I like about it, is how the scouting community has embraced it to use for ideas and for sounding boards.
