Phones came along on campouts. Leaders reviewed the apps that tracked advancement, taught knots and found the trail, and shared what they kept on their home screens.
I'm starting a new feature here on Scouting News . With the increasing number of Scouting related applications for phones I've decided to feature a new one each week. This week I'm taking a look at an application called Helleniechsin . Helleniechsin is an English-Lenape Dictionary of the Lenni Lenape (Delaware Indian) language as spoken by the…
The Scout Association has launched the My Badges app which contains all the information and requirements for each badge and award from Beavers through to Network. This is an excellent idea which means we can have all the badge requirements available in our pockets on our mobile devices.
100 Days of Scouting: Day 60. Tuesday night, at the Scenic District Roundtable, a short discussion of iPads, iPods, and cell phones came up. Most of the troops represented stated they have a no-electronics policy on camping trips, similar to my troop.
I've done a few iPhone app posts before. As times change so do the apps. Here's my current top 20: BSA Handbook Troop Badges (Premier Ed.) Good Turn Flashlight Knot Guide SAS Survival Guide – Lite Pocket Universe: Virtual Sky Astronomy Pocket First Aid & CPR from the American Heart Association Coleman® Campfire Tales Classic
It is a gadget I would like to get, but I do not have one yet. Even my mother would like to have one after playing with the one my sister-in-law owns. I am sure many of you would like one if you do not already own one.
While I always have my phone on me, sometimes I prefer the real estate of a bigger screen. Fortunately a number of my ‘Scouting Apps' have iPad optimized versions. Troop Badges is one of my favorites. Think of it as …
Last year I put together a post of interesting HalfEagle Stats from 2009 and I want to continue the tradition! I think this was HalfEagle's sixth year online and clearly we've come a long way in that time. Let's see if anything has changed since last year.
I t looks like Boy Scouts with iPhones and iPod Touch's will soon be able to keep track of their merit badges on their devices. According to scoutingnews.org: Beginning in early 2011, Boy Scouts will be able to manage their merit badges with an interactive application for the Apple iPhone.
Beginning in early 2011, Boy Scouts will be able to manage their merit badges with an interactive application for the Apple iPhone. The application which will be available for $1.99 through the iTunes Store , will let Scouts review merit badge requirements, keep track of their progress by requirement, and even share their success on Facebook.
I recently came across this app for Android phones. It's a very simple (and free) one which shows the UK Scout Laws and Promises for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Useful, for example, for when a passing Group Scout Leader is randomly asked what the Cub Scout Law is!
Last month, we told you all about ScoutQuest, the high-tech, interactive treasure hunt in Washington, D.C. And now the wait is over. On Saturday and Sunday, you and your Scouts can "uncover the links between Scouting and some of our greatest national treasures in this interactive, citywide hunt," as described by the event's Web site…
Next month, Scouts from across the country will converge in Washington, D.C., for ScoutQuest , a high-tech, interactive search that anyone can play. ScoutQuest is held July 24 and 25; the 2010 National Scout Jamboree begins the next day. Players will be sent to several noteworthy spots in our nation's capital, including the Smithsonian National Air…
There has been a lot written about the Kindle vs. the iPad debate. My question is this, is either one useful for the wonderful world of Scouting? I do not own either one, but I do see possible uses for both gadgets.
So, you are a Boy Scout, or a Boy Scout leader, who has an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Did you know that there are a few apps available just for you in the Apple iTunes App store? Yep, that's right.
6 Vote On Idea Is there any way that we can get a guide to safe scouting app for the iphone like you did with the new handbook. Comments (0) Technology
Scout Tracker records individual rank advancement in a Scout's iPhone or iPod touch. The current version includes the January 1, 2010 rank requirements. This simple, utilitarian and welcome way of tracking advancement is another demonstration of how useful an iPod, iPhone or similar device can be in Scouting.
On Saturday, the BSA released version 1.1 of its Boy Scout Handbook iPhone app. The app, which we gave a favorable review in early September, gets even better with this update. One of only complaints we had with the original version of the app was the lack of landscape view.
Pocket Universe is the best (and least expensive) of several astronomy applications I have purchased. Pocket Universe has a simple to use yet a rich set of features. The planetarium-like display features a clear horizon, something other applications may lack causing a bit of confusion.
For years I always packed a portable CD player on car-camping trips with the Scouts (and on a couple of backpacking trips back in the dark ages when we carried 40-50 pound packs). I listened to music as I went to sleep and again in the mornings as I was waking up.
You know those iPhone commercials where familiar life situations are made easier with the iPhone? For example: "If you're an avid baseball fan and want to catch a game-winning run, live, there's an app for that." Or: "If you need to find a cab in a strange city, there's an app for that."
