Pack meetings, den adventures, pinewood derbies and blue and gold banquets. Den leaders and Cubmasters swapped ideas for keeping younger Scouts busy, happy and learning.
I'm starting a day late, but "100 Days of Scouting" wagon's moving slow enough I figure I can climb on. Day 1: Had two scoutmaster conferences in the afternoon. One was with a neighbor Webelos scout fulfilling his Arrow of Light requirements and thinking of joining our troop.
American Cultures Merit Badge Wednesday is still the most hectic Scouting day of my week. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, email, calendar corrections, meeting plans, trips to the store, and merit badge counseling. Oh...and blogging, confirming appointments for other Scouting events, Blue and Gold updates...you get the idea.
“What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” -T.S. Eliot Today marks the 101st birthday of the Boy Scouts of America! I know how we’ll be opening our pack meeting tonight, maybe with a little singing?
Tonight is our Blue and Gold dinner...I still have an active role in the pack, as the 2nd Assistant Cubmaster. I took on the role after seeing some issues with a couple of the younger dens, and asked the Cubmaster if he needed a hand.
Tomorrow is a big day. Scouts--and Scouters--all over America will celebrate the birthday of Scouting. 101 years strong and already taking on a new century. It is also the beginning of 100 Days of Scouting . Tomorrow is Day 1, where each and every day I will log in what I've done for Scouting that day.
ClassB® celebrated Pinewood Derby® season this year by launching our own Pinewood Derby event last week. All staff were invited to design and build their own car, with prizes being awarded for "best design" and "fastest." Cars were built using official Pinewood Derby kits and had to weigh in at 5 oz.
Today I am posting another den meeting plan for Webelos Engineer activity badge. This meeting plan, along with the first meeting plan, completes all of the requirements.
Webelos Engineer Activity Badge Den Meeting Plan Part 1
When we were working on the Engineer activity badge, I told my Webelos that engineering is all about looking at a problem, considering the resources at your disposal, and then finding a solution.
It is a gadget I would like to get, but I do not have one yet. Even my mother would like to have one after playing with the one my sister-in-law owns. I am sure many of you would like one if you do not already own one.
One of my favorite memories from Boy Scout camp-outs was gathering around the fire and listening to the assistant Scoutmasters tell campfire stories. I loved movies and books growing up, but there was something about those live stories that was more compelling than the printed word or images on a screen.
Last night, Tuesday January 25th, Cub Scout Pack 68 held their Pinewood Derby. Six Cub Scouts competed in the event. Each of the Cub Scouts took home a trophy. Three Boy Scouts of Troop 68 also held separate races for the fun of it.
Last night at our Troop meeting we had two groups of Webelos Scouts pay the Troop a visit. When their leaders called to set up a "Good time" to do their Troop visit, I gave them my standard response... we meet on Monday's...
It's Pinewood Derby season again and to let the good times roll, we've compiled a series of blog posts based on the popular Cub Scout activity of building and racing wooden cars. In this final post, we thought it would be fun to showcase some of the coolest cars we've encountered on the internet.
In Part 3 of our blog series to help get you ready for the Pinewood Derby, we wanted to post some of the finer points of the Derby's history. Used by permission. Boy Scouts of America® All Rights Reserved. The Pinewood Derby was approved as an official Cub Scout Activity in 1955, but the first…

BSA Tiger Den Meeting 1 – Bobcat and Making My Family Special
For the most part, I like the new BSA Program helps. Sometimes the helps are a little light on specifics or you have to hunt around in another publication or online for some additional resources. So I've included some additional information I think would be helpful.
Photo (cc) via Flickr, Peter E. Lee It's Pinewood Derby season and we want to share some tips that will help you and your Scouts have a great time at your pack's Pinewood Derby. In part 1 of this 4 part series, we're going to offer some tips to consider when trying to build the…
This is a crossword puzzle I made for a gathering activity for a den meeting. It's purpose is just to familiarize the Cub Scout with the 12 core values
The core value for January for Cub Scouts is positive attitude. This Cubmaster minute uses a story about Gandhi to demonstrate what positive attitude means. You could even have a few den chiefs act this out while you tell the story.
Wolf Den Meeting Plan for Achievement 4 – Know Your Home and Community
Wolf Achievement 4 - Know Your Home and Community - helps Cub Scouts learn how to take care of themselves and be safe. This den meeting plan covers requirements a, b, c, d, and e.
Have you checked out the PTC Media podcast site yet? ( http://www.ptcmedia.net ) The PTC Media network is a collection of eight Scouting related podcasts, seven audio and one video. They are produced by several Scout leaders from across the United States.
It has been a long time since I have been involved with a Pinewood Derby . I was never a Cub Scout so I did not participate in one as a youth. I do remember acting as a judge for one in the 1990′s for the local pack.
If you have a pet, have your Cub Scout check out the Pet Care Belt Loop from the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. He will have to take care of the pet for two weeks (a positive from any parent's point of view) and learn about his pet.
The process of moving from a Cub Scout to a Boy Scout can be a little daunting for both the Cub Scout and the leader. Join us as John Powell, the associate director of the Center for Professional Development in Westlake, Texas, explains how to make this transition a special event for everyone involved.
Our Pinewood Derby is next weekend and my den are putting the finishing touches on their cars (hopefully). I've told them they can count their cars as a Craftsman project if they did a significant amount of work on the cars themselves.
