Two years from now at this time, scouts from across the country will be at the National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia… What can they expect? What will be the experience? Will it all be worth it?? Listen to these perspectives from an LDS Troop who attended in 2013:
I attended the 2001 National Jamboree as the scoutmaster of Troop 1417. I had a great time. I had a great troop. And I collected quite a few patches from the event. In fact, I still collect patches from the event when I find some for a reasonable trade or cost.

One of the fun traditions of Scouting is patch trading. I have been acquiring patches now since about 1978. I would like to say that I have a ton of patches, but I really don't. You see, I did like most Scouts and Scouters do and did, I got a patch for going to Camporee…
In reading some comments on a Bryan on Scouting blog post, someone lamented that President Obama did not attend that National Jamboree while “every other President attended Boy Scout Jamborees while in office.” I was curious as to how accurate that statement was, as I’ve heard it several times prior to that comment.
For this week's installment of Throwback Thursday, check out this group photo of the 1987 National Jamboree contingent from Northeast Ohio Council (now part of the Greater Western Reserve Council). This was Troop 1912. As I recall the number was important in the history of scouting, possibly when the first units in the area were…

I know many of you collect patches, be they council strips, Order of the Arrow lodge flaps, or activity patches. One of the several patch collection I have is of the 2001 National Jamboree. I collect from that event because I attended it with nine Boy Scouts from my troop.
Maybe I should not have done it. After all, it has been 13 years since that event was held. But I had a good time and a great group of Scouts along so I will always remember the 2001 National Jamboree fondly.
Here are a couple of snapshots for Throwback Thursday. The year was 1989. Times were different then, though maybe not much. Cameras shot pictures on film. Scouts had red epaulets. And George Bush was president. The first Pres. George Bush, the one with the extra H.
Here's some other Jamborees that would be awesome to go to. If only I were independently wealthy... It would be warm at the 15th Caribbean Jamboree . Probably cooler at the International Jamboree in Iceland which just concluded. Of course you can always plan for the World Scout Moot in Icleand in 2017 And of course…

Better transportation, more time off, a staff village and maybe, just maybe, warmer showers. That's just some of what's in store for volunteers at the 2017 National Jamboree. They're in for an even better experience than staffers had last summer.
Steve Fox's list of roles and responsibilities in Scouting spans five decades. Only three of these patches were ever made. Baden-Powell's granddaughter sewed each one by hand using thread from a jacket once worn by James E. West." Does that patch-trading pitch make your Spidey sense tingle? In the past, you might have just laughed, said "no deal" and walked away.
The 2001 National Jamboree may be ancient history to today's Boy Scouts but it is not to me. Not yet anyway. That is the Jamboree I attended as a scoutmaster of one of two troops sent from the Central Minnesota Council.
