OK, so back in January the blog over at Scouting Magazine put out the information on the Historic Merit Badge Program. Unfortunately this information was put out before the program was ready to roll and caught most of the scouting community off-guard (including me) when they posted that the program was being postponed.
2 Vote On Idea From: James Welch, Troop 66, Palo Alto, California [email protected] As a Troop Committee Chairman and a merit badge counselor, I have often wondered why the content of the merit badge pamphlets is not available online. This week's merit badge is one that fosters lifelong skills that scouts can use in their every day lives. While working on this merit badge scouts will get the chance to learn one of the most valuable skills they can, how to cook.
Do you recall the post at Scouting Magazine that got everyone excited about the Historic Merit Badge program? Carpentry, Signaling, Tracking, and Pathfinding merit badges are being resurrected for 2010 only as a part of the centennial celebration - a great idea!
You may have heard rumors that the Historic Merit Badge Program has been canceled. Not true. What is true is that the BSA is putting finishing touches on the program now, and the end result will be well worth the wait.
A few Councils have started releasing the requirements for the much anticipated Geocaching Merit Badge. This was originally discussed as GPS/GIS Merit Badge. Keep in mind the Geocaching merit badge and pamphlet are not finalized yet, but these appear to be close to, if not, the final Geocaching Merit Badge requirements.
A little fun from Scouting magazine--what is wrong with the merit badges on the left? The ones on the right are the current* version. So why were they changed? Answer (scroll to the bottom). *Beekeeping is not a current merit badge, this was the last version of it.

This email came from a listener/reader. I answered it in Podcast number 4 as well as in this post; Hi Clarke- I really enjoy your thoughtful blogs and podcasts, and I'm interested to learn about your views on merit badge days.

-2 Vote On Idea I put this idea together from "Merit Badges and Scoutmasters" as well as from the comments posted in that idea then inserted some information from my past experiences and slammed them all together as such am putting out two ideas; this one and one on "Improving Scout, Volunteer & Unit Retention Rates".
-4 Vote On Idea We have many merit badges that focus on different career paths. What about the multimedia career path? The idea here is to bring about what multimedia designer do. The finished product is to be a video, interactive website, or print brochure.
According to the good folks over at U.S. Scouting Service Project News Blog, the historic Merit Badge program is on hold . There had been a few rumors about the program happening, but it looked like everything was in the bag when the Scouting Magazine blog introduced the program on Jan 12, 2010.
WE've gottten a note from BSA that the Historic Merit Badge program for the Centennial has been delayed. Although a notice was placed in the Scouting Magazine "Cracker Barrel" blog, it was premature. The requirements we posted were DRAFTS, and have bnot been finalized pr approved yet.
Here is a snapshot of January 2010 here at Scouting News. First, I'd like to thank our September Sponsor: BoyScoutStore.com Boy Scout Store is an independent website, not affilated with the BSA, Girl Scouts of the USA, or the World Scouting Movement, and has provided Scouting collectibles since 1996.
Last evening I completed a review of the new BOY SCOUT REQUIREMENTS 2010 booklet and uploaded information on all of the known changes to Merit Badge and Rank requirements. I also included the new definition and explanation of he procedure to be used for identifying "ACTIVE" Scouts.
This week's merit badge focuses on skills that are vital in being ready for emergency situations. The Emergency Preparedness merit badge or the lifesaving merit badge can be used for the eagle required merit badge but you must only earn one.
5 Vote On Idea Perhaps we could create a system by which units manage their own Merit Badge Counselor listings for their Troop and recharter them as a unit. Thereby a District Merit Badge Coordinator would only be responsible for tracking and rechartering those Counselors that are district-only.
The BSA recently released four historic merit badges that were around when scouting was founded for scouts to earn during 2010. These merit badges will allow scouts to learn things that some of the first scouts learned. The requirements will be the same as the originals except were safety or social standards dictate otherwise.
1 Vote On Idea Learn the process of predicting how an action will influence other things. Systems thinking is a problem solving approach that looks at how changing one element influences other parts of the whole over time. Use tools, games, and activities to collaborate on solving real-world problems using a Systems Thinking approach.
1 Vote On Idea Learn the complexity associated with the management of renewable natural resources. Understand how one eco-system impacts another and how you can change the environment by what you do. 1 Vote On Idea Conflict is normal between and among people. Conflict resolution helps build character and responsible citizens. This Merit Badge would allow scouts to learn practical skills on how to recognize it, different types, strategies, and how to resolve conflict.
Four old-time merit badges are being resurrected for the BSA Centennial celebration. In 2010 ONLY, scouts can earn Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking - the last three being dormant since the 1950s! Of all the planned hoopla, I think this is about the coolest - not many scouts will be able to show off these few patches.

Historical merit badges help Boy Scouts celebrate Scouting's past A merit badge called Computers would sound just a crazy to a 1910 Boy Scout as a merit badge called Tracking sounds to Scouts today. That's because the BSA's list of available merit badges has evolved through the years as the interests of boys have changed.
