NYLT, IOLS, position-specific courses and the trainers who ran them. These posts follow adults and youth learning to lead, and the people who taught them.
Troop Leadership Training is happening in November for our troop (more here ). In a very timely email, this link appeared from the email ether: Troop Positions of Responsibility The following leadership positions count toward Boy Scout advancement. For more information, see the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook (#32501) and Patrol Leader Handbook (#32502A).
Patrol leader training is not an event; it is an ongoing process of coaching and mentoring. Good coaching comes from a solid, simple, shared understanding of the fundamentals. To my mind a trained patrol leader knows these fundamentals. Here's how I train patrol leaders in fifteen minutes.
Earlier this month, I served on staff for another Wood Badge course… this time as Senior Patrol Leader. What another great occasion it was to be surrounded by amazing people with a desire to do their best in a program that was designed to change lives (and I thought being a Troop Guide was fun!).
Time to open the mailbag and answer a couple more of your questions. First, from the chartered organization representative of a Cub Scout pack: We’re chartered by the Parent-Teacher Association of the elementary school that we serve. Up until now, the PTA has been a affiliated with the school, but they are separating and the…
We often talk about having all of our adult leaders trained. When we speak of training we are talking about the basics. Has the adult completed Youth Protection? Attended their Basic Course for the specific position? And according to the Boy Scouts of America, that's pretty much a trained leader.
Troop Leader Training... One of the things that the previous Scoutmaster did that I loved was the TLT Weekend. At first it was JLT, then BSA changed focus and redesigned the program. We kept it a weekend though the new program calls for 3 afternoon type classes (or something like that).
I’ve been meaning to post about this training for a while now, but just now finally getting around to it. A couple of weeks ago our outgoing Cubmaster and I put on our first BALOO training. I have been wanting to do more training and finally discovered that if I want to do training, then…
Intro to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) training will be held in conjunction with the district camporee next weekend. I've cajoled a handful of scouters to present the sessions and now just hope it fits the schedules of enough untrained scouters to make it work.
Every Cub Scout leader should be trained. It is hard to put on an effective Cub Scout program without trained leaders. As soon as a new Cub Scout leader is registered, he or she should take online Fast Start Training .
If you are considering hosting a troop JLT as our Scout Master is planning to do for Troop 483, there are amazing resources out there for you . For example, I'm providing you with just a taste of what I found on a website provided by Troop 659 dedicated to their JLT Training .
A Venturer from Pennsylvania who’s strengthening the link between Venturing and the Order of the Arrow. An adult volunteer from Texas who’s finding innovative ways to keep Venturing exciting and relevant to today’s youth. The young man who will become Venturing’s top youth leader next month.

A century ago, in a forest not far from London, a group of Scouting volunteers made history. Over a span of nearly two weeks, they experienced a course, devised by Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell, that offered “practical instruction as to how a camp should be run.”
An inventive new Wood Badge course, scheduled for January 2020 at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, will give participants a chance to experience the “linked troop” model used by many Scouts BSA troops. Everything about the course breaks the Wood Badge mold in exciting ways.
Venturing couldn’t exist without the dedication of young people and adults who plan events, recruit new members and help crews achieve their goals. Even more remarkable is that most of this work happens behind the scenes, with no recognition expected.
When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, it won’t just mean the end of 2018. It’ll also mean the end of any partial progress made toward position-specific training for Cub Scout leaders and Boy Scout leaders. (These courses, and many more, are found at the BSA Learn Center on My.Scouting.org .)
By now you’ve heard that everyone must take the updated, online Youth Protection training course in order for their unit to recharter. This includes any registered leaders who took Youth Protection training — online or in person — before Feb. 1, 2018.
By now, you should have taken the new Youth Protection Training course online to bring your training current. As we’ve discussed before, everyone must take the new course, which was released in February, regardless of the expiration date of your YPT.
As we have discussed recently , the revised Youth Protection Training is now available, and all Scouters are required to take it regardless of when your current training expires. If you have not taken the new course, which was released in mid-February, your YPT expiration date has been reset to September 30.
Even as Wood Badge prepares to turn 100 next year, it’s still charting new territory. Last month, a group of Scouters from across the country held the first Wood Badge course in the history of the Summit Bechtel Reserve. While the syllabus for this essential leadership training for Scout leaders was unchanged, this was a…
Scuba diving in enchanting aquamarine waters, sailing in a bay adorned with a lush mountainous backdrop, savoring a delicious fish and rice dinner cooked in leaves and bamboo. Sounds like a great vacation, right? It also sounds like Powder Horn at Hawaii’s Aloha Council .
Ready to take your council’s National Youth Leadership Training to the next level? Encourage one or more of your youth NYLT staffers to attend the NYLT Leadership Academy . To understand NYLT Leadership Academy, you must first understand NYLT. NYLT is a council-offered leadership training experience for young people.
The Philmont Training Center isn’t the exclusive home of high-level BSA training. Excellent opportunities await at the Summit Bechtel Reserve’s John D. Tickle National Training and Leadership Center in West Virginia. The center has a long name but a simple purpose: Help adults and youth make an even bigger impact on their unit, district or…
BALOO stands for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. It’s the introductory training Cub Scout leaders should complete before taking Cub Scouts on an overnight camping trip. Recent updates to this two-part course make the content more impactful, useful and convenient.
The BSA has announced bold, wide-ranging updates to its Youth Protection program as part of an ongoing effort to protect young people from child abuse. This starts with an enhanced online Youth Protection training course all volunteers and professionals must complete.
Update Your Training by October 1, 2018 The Boy Scouts of America’s updated youth protection training doesn’t just talk about the dangers of child predators – it shows how they work to gain access to their victims. In early February, the BSA introduced newly updated youth protection training that is required for all volunteers before October…
As anticipated, the Boy Scouts of America has issued some major updates to our landmark Youth Protection procedures. The program is being expanded and strengthened, and will include youth training in youth protection for the first time (aside from our traditional A Time to Tell and It Happened to Me programs).
On July 31, 1948, William “Green Bar Bill” Hillcourt served as Scoutmaster at the first official Wood Badge course in the United States. Seventy years later, Wood Badge has grown into an essential training experience for adult volunteers. You’ll find proud Wood Badge alumni — myself included — in every council in the country.
Registration is now live for a pair of 2018 national Wood Badge Pilot Courses that precede a 2019 update to the BSA’s premier leadership training program for adults. The update, known as the Wood Badge Centennial Update, will be released in 2019 for use in 2020 and beyond.
Every Scout deserves a trained leader, but less than 50 percent of direct-contact leaders complete basic training for their position. Scouting U wants to change that. The BSA’s training team has set its 2017 goal: at least 50 percent of direct-contact leaders trained this year.
Handing a Boy Scout a badge of office doesn’t automatically make him a good leader. He needs to be trained. He needs to take the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, or ILST. This training course is conducted in three modules — each 60 to 90 minutes.
Looking to add a dose of leadership training to your next big Scouting adventure? Integrate Kodiak Challenge into the plan, and you'll double the impact the trip has on Scouts and Venturers. Kodiak Challenge invites young people to step outside their comfort zones to experience hands-on leadership training.
Back in March, I read A Parent's Guide to Raising Successful Missionaries , the latest book by Brad and Sandy Harris. In addition to everything I already mentioned about this book, I also appreciated the personal accounts that were included from actual returned missionaries.
The life of a Wood Badge scribe: Great days, late nights
Late on Saturday night, the printer sounded an alarm: the cyan and yellow ink cartridges were running dangerously low. I turned to Brian, my assistant scribe, to help me make a life-or-death critical decision. "OK, here's the situation. We have two options," I said.
The Boy Scouts of Melrose Troop 68 sure like their disc golf. They like it so well that for the last few years they have planned a disc golf outing as part of their yearly program. Central Minnesota has several disc golf courses.
No doubt – Scout leader training is invaluable, as are the selfless folks who volunteer to train their fellow Scouters (thank you if you do!) I recommend you take advantage of every training opportunity possible. Trained Scouters are more likely to do good, and less likely to do harm.
Introduction to Leadership Skills Training (ILST), for some of you it means JLT others remember TLT.. either way it amounts to training your youth leaders to make their troop better. Each year we conduct our youth training with the goal of getting the youth leaders of the troop all on the same page, giving them…

How do you identify a young person who has attended National Youth Leadership Training, the council-level course also known as NYLT? You can look for the Scout or Venturer who is confident in his or her leadership role. You can look for the Scout or Venturer who practices servant leadership, valuing the team above the…
Like most three-year-olds my granddaughter is a expert learner – she soaks up everything around her like a sponge. There's a new discovery every hour of the day, it's a challenge keeping up. How do three-year-olds learn? Through a process of discovery.
It’s back to school season in Scouting, folks! And no, we aren’t talking about dashing to your first class or memorizing your new schedule. Adult volunteers in Scouting are gearing up for a unique educational experience with Scouting University (Scouting U).
Everyone has heard the mantra about how “every boy deserves a trained leader”, yes? …and many of you reading this may automatically associate that phase with adults and Wood Badge , right? Have you ever thought about that phrase applying to your youth leaders as well??
The Greater NYC Council is hosting a bilingual Wood Badge course in Spanish and English, August 8 – 13, 2015. Scout leaders from all Scouting programs are invited to attend the course, located at Alpine Scout Camp in New Jersey. Hear from course staffer Bishop James Tamayo, as he invites Scout leaders to partake in this…
Beginning in 2015, NAYLE, National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, will be offered at all four Boy Scouts of America national high-adventure bases.
We often talk about having all of our adult leaders trained. When we speak of training we are talking about the basics. Has the adult completed Youth Protection? Attended their Basic Course for the specific position? And according to the Boy Scouts of America, that's pretty much a trained leader.
Ask the Expert: Wood Badge course numbering, decoded
W2-590-14-8, C6-160-14-2, S4-83-14-2, N4-527-14. Are those nuclear launch codes? A paranoid person's computer password? Some sort of weird locker combination? Nope. Those four sets of characters describe the numbers of actual Wood Badge courses being offered in 2014. And in reality, the code - found on every modern Wood Badge course - isn't that difficult to crack.
Every Scout deserves a trained leader, and every leader deserves an opportunity for high-quality training. Well, there's no better training for adults than Wood Badge, and that philosophy of "No Scouter untrained" led Utah's Great Salt Lake Council to create a Wood Badge course tailored for both deaf and hearing Scouters.
Ensuring every youth member is led by a trained leader is critical when it comes to providing "life changing experiences you can't get anywhere else." The year-end figures for the 2013 Journey to Excellence show that 71 percent of the councils in the BSA improved their JTE score in direct contact leaders trained.
So who here has a perfect Troop? A group of Scouts that get along with no issues? A unit that has a culture of absolute peace and harmony? Yeah? If you have that Troop, please let me know what side of Utopia you live on and I will come and check that out..
Well, I just finished my second staff assignment on a Wood Badge course this past weekend. While I liked being a Scribe on my first staff experience , I really enjoyed interacting with the participants as a Troop Guide over the Bear Patrol this time.

I wanted to do a follow-up to a blog post that I wrote in January about our TLT. It's about time for another TLT session, because we hold them within a month after each troop election. It helps to refresh the Scouts who were on the last PLC, and obviously, help the new Scouts find…
Six Online Training Courses Every Scouter Should Take
In addition to the program-oriented courses offered through MyScouting.org completing these six online training courses are a worthwhile way for any Scouter to improve their safety IQ. As a young Scoutmaster I was much more reluctant to have anyone impose any limitations on my Scouts.
Why are you here and what do you expect to get out of this course?" That's a pretty different way to kick off a BSA training course. Truth is, I signed up for the Philmont Leadership Challenge after learning these five things: It was at Philmont It builds upon the training you receive during Wood…
Spent some time going over the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook this weekend. Along the same lines as the Patrol Leader Position Specific Training, I've gone through the SPL Handbook and outlined a training module for use with initial position specific …

As I posted yesterday, we have a tremendous month of September coming up, most of it Scouting related. Swimming and band will take up some of October, and more Scouting… Before I get to that, what's a little disappointing is that once again Woodbadge training for me has been postponed.
