NYLT, IOLS, position-specific courses and the trainers who ran them. These posts follow adults and youth learning to lead, and the people who taught them.
Todos los Scouts se merece un líder entrenado. In other words, "Every Scout deserves a trained leader." The statement is true in any language, and now, Scout leaders who are more comfortable speaking Spanish can take the highest level of adult leader training, Wood Badge, at a first-of-its-kind Spanish-language Wood Badge course.
I’ve been meaning to post about this training for a while now, but just now finally getting around to it. A couple of weeks ago our outgoing Cubmaster and I put on our first BALOO training. I have been wanting to do more training and finally discovered that if I want to do training, then…
I’m looking forward to the end of April as I will be putting on BALOO training for 6-8 scouters from our Pack. I’ve been asked by the District Training Chair if I would be willing to open it up to other Packs, and I REALLY want to, however, I’m fearful to bite off more than…
Send your Scouts to NAYLE, the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience , and watch their leadership skills soar. Who's eligible? Boy Scouts or Venturers (male or female) who are at least 14 but not yet 21, hold a unit leadership position, and have completed National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) are eligible.
Course Director Roger Tipley and the Sam Houston Area Council would like to announce their Powder Horn Course for 2012. This will be a six-day course covering two weekends. May 4-6 and May 18-20. More information can be found here.
The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), previously an all male leadership training course, is now open to all Venturing youth between the ages of 13 and 17. Yes, you read correctly. NYLT is open to male and female youth. The course focuses on what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what
Saturday was a perfectly beautiful fall day, great for being outside. The district had it's Camporee and I held Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills training at the same time and location so adult leaders could camp with their troops and spend their day getting trained while the scouts were doing 'stuff'.
Intro to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) training will be held in conjunction with the district camporee next weekend. I've cajoled a handful of scouters to present the sessions and now just hope it fits the schedules of enough untrained scouters to make it work.
At the battle of San Juan Hill over a hundred years ago, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt (later the first and only Chief Scout Citizen) didn't shout "Charge," or "Go Get 'em" to his Rough Riders! He shouted, "FOLLOW ME!" NAYLE is the BSA's premiere Outdoor Leadership Training for Scouts, Venturers and Sea Scouts-both young men and…
One of my Scouts was out last fall for a while playing football and was thinking about not coming back. His dad encouraged him, he came back, and in February he was elected Patrol Leader. This led to him participating in our Troop Leader Training Conference (TLT).
I am switching it up and posting the next morning because I do a lot of work into the night... An almost NON-Scout day, as in no meetings but plenty of work was done! - worked on the TLT Powerpoint for this weekend.
Last night at Round table I was asked to give the Scoutmaster Minute, go figure. Anyway, I had not really prepared as it was a last minute thing, but as the evening progressed a central theme hit me. We were talking about training.
[Author’s note: Throughout this article I am not referring to any specific Troop, this is more general.] I’ve had the opportunity to visit several Boy Scout troops during my time in Scouts, and the one thing I know for sure is that each one operates differently.
This is becoming a bit of a habit – I'm making a post a whole week after I did something. Last weekend I was on a young leader training course at Bradley Wood (which I seem to be spending a lot of time at recently). I completed 5 Modules (A-E): Module A, Prepare for take
Just in time for the start of the program year, Position-Specific Training is now available for Cub Scout leaders. The training courses have been updated to reflect the new Cub Scout delivery method, which Scouting magazine introduced to you in our May-June issue .
Troop Leader Training... One of the things that the previous Scoutmaster did that I loved was the TLT Weekend. At first it was JLT, then BSA changed focus and redesigned the program. We kept it a weekend though the new program calls for 3 afternoon type classes (or something like that).
26 Vote On Idea Recently, a volunteer went online to update his youth protection training since it had been two years. Instead of taking the entire course again, he simply took the quiz thinking "if i can pass the quiz and show that I still have the knowledge that should be good enough."
3 Vote On Idea For those who have completed the national youth leadership training. You have to take the patch off upon turning 18, and youth should be recognized for the training. Comments (0) Other
Troop Leadership Training is happening in November for our troop (more here ). In a very timely email, this link appeared from the email ether: Troop Positions of Responsibility The following leadership positions count toward Boy Scout advancement. For more information, see the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook (#32501) and Patrol Leader Handbook (#32502A).
1 Vote On Idea So we all know that Youth Protection Training (YPT) expires every two years and with out YPT you're not a trained leader. In the Council I serve, many adults will take YPT, and the other training courses and say "PHEW!!
Senior Patrol Leader elections were last week with an 8th grade Life scout taking the reins for the next 6 months. The troop elects a new SPL in Sept. and March - then a mad flurry of training occurs. It's pretty fun and the training of scouts is one of a Scoutmaster's main goals.
17 Vote On Idea Currently there are 3 Den Leader training courses offered: Tiger, Cub, and Webelos. There is really only about 10 – 20 minutes worth of different materials across these trainings. Why not consolidate these into "Den Leader Training" and cover all levels?
I have been a strong proponent of leadership training ever since I went though my new leader essentials training as a Tiger Coach and that was several years ago and I have since learned through my interaction with my scout friends in other countries (I have been involved in communication with some 35 countries with…
Yesterday I helped with the BALOO training session, which was held at Camp Rokilio , and I am aways amazed at the number of people now jumping at the chance to take advantage of training made available by Bay-Lakes Council. Although the class size was one of the smaller classes, the attitude has recently changed from…
If you are considering hosting a troop JLT as our Scout Master is planning to do for Troop 483, there are amazing resources out there for you . For example, I'm providing you with just a taste of what I found on a website provided by Troop 659 dedicated to their JLT Training .
It's May, so we have to ask: How will the boys in your troop or crew spend their summer? If a boring summer job or hours of quality time with a PlayStation 3 look likely, listen up. NAYLE, the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, is gearing up for another summer of high-level training at Philmont.
On the stage, a spotlight shines on someone who is the center of attention because they choose to be. Scouter Spotlight is different because the people we highlight don't seek applause or praise. Instead, they work behind the scenes to make Scouting better for the kids.
0 Vote On Idea I've had lots of leaders suggest that an updated version of the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Training be created. They have lots of ideas on how to improve it and add to it. Perhaps even an advanced outdoor leader training could be created.
-1 Vote On Idea How about rescinding the decision to award Wood Badge beads to qualifying NYLT Scoutmasters and Asst. Scoutmasters (see the syllabus)? Perhaps Baden Powell did award the beads to trainers of other courses, but he doesn't have to deal with the furor of many of our Wood Badge volunteers.
0 Vote On Idea On the online Youth Protection Training course there is a slide that needs to be changed. It is in one of the sections where you have to identify which scenario would be right...if a youth could visit with a Scoutmaster in his tent.
Can anyone tell be the three tiers to the youth leadership training continuum. Let me give you a hint it begins with Troop Leadership Training. So Now that you know that the three courses our TLT, NYLT, and NAYLE. Lets talk about what each class is about.
It must be a fever that is contagious because my husband and I can't wait to get back to our high adventure training at Powder Horn in less than two weeks. We had a blast getting to know the PH leaders, other members in our Crew, as well as having the opportunity to form a…
Bay-Lakes Council, located in Wisconsin, will offer a week-long Wood Badge course this August, running from Monday through Saturday, to enable participation from scouters who faith practices do not permit/enable Sunday activities. It will be at Cub Scout World Camp Rokilio, near Kiel east of Lake Winnebago.
One of the leadership positions that is rarely used or if used it is commonly misused is that of the Junior Assistant Scoutmaster or JASM. The JASM is a youth leader in the Troop that has the primary purpose of serving as the youth leader and scout advisor.
The National Advanced youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) Website has been updated with information for the 2009 courses. What is NAYLE? The National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) is a course offered by the Philmont Training Center that is based at the Rocky Mountain Scout Camp.
Every Cub Scout leader should be trained. It is hard to put on an effective Cub Scout program without trained leaders. As soon as a new Cub Scout leader is registered, he or she should take online Fast Start Training .
When your pack has an overnight campout, at least one of the leaders in charge must have completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) training (No. 34162). BALOO training includes an introduction to outdoor camping skills as well as important BSA rules and policies to be followed on any Cub Scout campout.
