Late June 2010 Time to carve: 6.5 hours Finishing: 1.5 hour Aye, I been looking forward to carving this one. Carved from maple it is a mix of a chip and finished carving. Though roughed out on the band saw, there was quite a bit of carving involved with this slide.

As driver of the No. 19 Boy Scouts of America IndyCar , Alex Lloyd has a built-in fan base of millions of Scouts, parents, volunteers, and alumni. And when he finished fourth at May's Indianapolis 500, he wooed many more fans who have never been involved with Scouting.
Allow me a self-congratulatory moment as, with this post, the Scoutmaster Blog reaches the 1000 post mark. I started writing the blog almost five years ago (here's the first post ) as an exercise in sorting out my own thinking and in the vague hope that someone may find it useful.
Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent. The 12 points of the Scout Law. Words to live by. We all know them and as scouters, want our scouts to not only be able to recite them, but to live their everyday lives by them.
What a crazy month it has been! I have been so busy with work and Scouts that I need just a day to sleep. But we do not have the time to just relax sometimes. We have Summer Camp right around the corner.
Local units, districts, and councils have been celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Scouting all year. But on July 31, it'll be time for everyone in America to come together for one "Shining" moment. Organizers are calling "A Shining Light Across America" the one moment of the 100th Anniversary Celebration "not to be missed."
Here's a shoulder patch shape you don't see often. The unique design of this patch complements the striking eagle that takes up most of the patch's real estate. It's up to you to Name That Council . We've removed the council's name.
This weekend, there's a good chance many of you will be heading to the outdoors to enjoy time with family and friends celebrating our country's independence -the 4th of July. I tried explaining exactly what the 4th of July was all about to my young children this morning.
Have you checked out Leave No Trace's Online Auction yet? This unique experience is bringing members of the Leave No Trace community from around the globe together for the first time, to share in their support and advocacy for the Center's mission.
So it's been a while since I've had any gear to review but this week that changes. So way back in January I won the Coleman gift card contest that Scoutmaster Steve or @stevejb68 on twitter was having over on A Scoutmaster's Blog .
The National Boy Scouts of America has issued a statement about President Barack Obama and his relationship with Scouting. I can only assume it is in response to a series of columns by Chuck Norris titled Whitehouse vs. Boy Scouts ( part 1 and part 2 ).

Friday's challenge was perfect for the Fourth of July weekend. From the red, white, and blue colors to the iconic eagle, this patch screams patriotism. But were you able to Name That Council? Because the patch features no geographical clues, the key was noticing the large red heart in the center.
Jamboree leaders and parents sending their boys to the 2010 National Scout Jamboree can now view daily, meal-by-meal menus online. SMM 59- Building a High Adventure Program in your Troop
Welcome back to the Scoutmaster Minute Podcast. In this show we talk about High Adventure programs in your Troop. Building a High Adventure program in your Troop does not require a Trip to Philmont.. You can do it in your own Council area and in the State you live in.
The Boy Scouts of Troop 68 used to like to song songs, mix them up a bit, and write new lyrics to them. They would then perform these "new" versions at campfire programs or during their annual Laughs For Lunch Show.
Winning a state football championship, especially in Texas, makes you a local legend. Earning the Eagle Scout Award puts you among Scouting's elite. Doing either is impressive. Doing both is unbelievable. But that's exactly the feat accomplished by nine Scouts from Abilene, Texas.
Can you name the three current high adventure bases of the Boy Scouts of America? Everyone can name Philmont Scout Ranch. Most people know about the Florida Sea Base. But did you know there is also a high adventure base in Minnesota?

Our Name That Council challenge is becoming more popular each week. Something about adding the incentive of a free patch has really made it take off. Who would have guessed that Scouters love free patches? The patch changes each week, but the formula stays the same: We remove all text from a council shoulder patch.
When we debuted a completely redesigned Scouting magazine last summer , we wanted readers to notice the easier-to-use design and more accessible content. A year later, we're happy to learn that readers weren't the only ones who noticed our new look.

Part of being prepared for an emergency means having the right tools. When dealing with a victim of cardiac arrest, there's no better tool for saving a life than an Automated External Defibrillator, or AED. There's no debating the effectiveness of one of these devices-defibrillation within three minutes lifts the victim's chance of survival to…

This is probably one of the most unusual titles that I have come up with but there are several parallels the Boy Scouts of America have in common with the railroads of the United States. Scouting like the American railroad began with humble beginnings and it grew through blood, sweat, and tears.

This edition of Name That Council turned out to be tougher than we expected. We received a record-low 12 correct answers, giving each person who entered a much better chance of winning the patch. There can be only one winner, though.
Last night, I talked to a friend of mine, and he asked how things were going in the troop. I told him that I had to do some "soul-searching"…it's not that I am having all kinds of troubles, I just need a minor course adjustment.
Seth Godin writes Type 1. You can take a class where you learn technique, facts and procedures. Type 2. You can take a class where you learn to see, learn to lead and learn to solve interesting problems. The first type of teaching isn't particularly difficult to do, and it's something most of us are…
Some say there is a fine line between being the Scoutmaster and a Dad when your boy is in your troop. I think this is an interesting discussion and one that I live with every day. I have two sons that are in my troop and my Jamboree troop also.

Though the organization's values have remained largely unchanged in the past 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has always evolved with the times. From introducing new merit badges to expanding the program to include young women, the BSA knows the importance of staying current.

Scouts are pretty comfortable on trails of all kinds. Whether it's a hiking path through a massive forest or the Trail to First Class, they'll find their way. Those instincts pay off in Boston, where following the city's famous Freedom Trail is a rite of passage for Scouts.
