Pack meetings, den adventures, pinewood derbies and blue and gold banquets. Den leaders and Cubmasters swapped ideas for keeping younger Scouts busy, happy and learning.
This is the third of a five-part series, Part one Understanding Cubs | Part two Understanding Meetings I've been a Cubmaster, and a den leader for Wolf, Bear, and Webelos dens. Volunteering as a Cub Scout leader ought to be a lot of fun, and it is, most of the time.
This is the second of a five-part series, the first features thoughts on understanding Cubs , the third post will discuss understanding volunteering. I've been a Cubmaster, and a den leader for Wolf, Bear, and Webelos dens. Volunteering as a Cub Scout leader ought to be a lot of fun, and it is, most of the time.
You’re probably accustomed to receiving supplemental roundtable content the first week of each month, but we’ve decided to release this month’s roundtable early. (Keep an eye out for “Voice of the Scout” survey information at the beginning of the month!)
I've been a Cubmaster, and a den leader for Wolf, Bear, and Webelos dens. Volunteering as a Cub Scout leader ought to be a lot of fun, and it is, most of the time. We had a "normal" Cub Pack, (if such a thing exists).
Nicole sent in this question I am looking for a little bit of info. I was also "volunteered" into the den mom position (which I totally didn't mind) but have no clue about any of this cub scout stuff. We made it through most of the year (thanks to google!)
Since this blog was started as a way to share my family's scouting adventures, I thought I'd add a new feature called "Meeting Mondays". All our den and troop meetings are on Mondays (along with other stuff like which makes them Mega-Mondays).
Training as a Scout comes in handy. Sure, knot tying and kindling know-how are awesome, but let’s not undersell how valuable time as a Scout can be. For these Scouts, BSA skills are a life saver: Alrick Johson saved his co-worker from choking, credits his Boy Scout training for life-saving skills.
Jessica sent in this question: I am a Committee Chair & a Den Leader and my husband is Cubmaster. We are a month away from our Blue and Gold Banquet. We have already planned into the ceremony for each rank of scouts to earn their rank badge.
Cub Scout Pack 68 held their annual Pinewood Derby on Sunday, January 25th, at the Melrose American Legion. Ten Cub Scouts and their families attended along with friends a several Boy Scouts. Everyone seemed to have a good time. I have been to several derbies through the last few decades, usually as an observer.
Mark sent in this question: I wanted to get an idea of how other Cub Scout packs handle Blue & Gold/AOL/Crossover events. Traditionally, our pack has held this entire event on one night with a dinner, cake decorating, and mainly used it to recognize our Webelos 2's who are moving on to Boy Scout troops.
I just wanted to say "farewell" to all the Webelos II that bridged over into Boy Scouts tonight. You've completed and awesome journey and more adventures await. The pack will miss all the fun and crazy energy your den had.
The three-minute video's title — "A Brief History of Cub Scouting" — says it all. It's a nice overview for new Cub Scouters and Cub Scouting veterans alike.
Building a birdhouse is such a great opportunity for our all of our boys. They learn about taking something simple, such as wood, and turning it into something useful. They learn about using tools safely. And they learn about helping other creatures. In the new Cub Scout Adventure program, our Tigers will build a birdhouse
I went to our district Roundtable meeting tonight to hear about the Cub Scout program changes schedule to go into effect on June 1 this year. Cub Scouts as we currently know the program will significantly change the advancement portion of the program, and modify the ideals slightly.
So the big day final came, the Pinewood Derby. Now, this wasn't my first rodeo, I've run the event since 2010 for my son's pack. But this year I helped train some other guys and let them run the show, which was a pretty big relief.
So with the Pinewood Derby tomorrow we themed the pack meeting by bringing in a real race car driver and his car. Now, we aren't talking NASCAR, but a local SCCA driver with his totally suped-up Honda Fit. The kids still got real excited about it, particularly when he was talking and answering questions and…
Tomorrow is the Pinewood Derby for Thing 2's pack. Just put the final touches on his car and marked in the wheels. We'll see how he does. He never wants to put that extra effort in to really sand it down smooth, go crazy with the paint, or put that extra glossy finish on it.
Jake Pritchard, an 11-year-old Cub Scout from Fair Oaks, California, didn't panic when his dad fell and seriously injured his head during a rappelling trip to Putah Creek State Wildlife Area. Instead, the boy kept calm and called 911, and now his father - though seriously injured - is recovering at a hospital.
A new Cub Scouting program is launching June 1, 2015, that will be more fun and exciting for boys, and easier to implement for unit leaders. To ensure you are ready to make the transition, a series of webcasts will be hosted on January 17 to outline the coming changes, how to prepare, and when…
Minecraft-themed pinewood derby cars are super popular this year. In pinewood derbies across the country, Cub Scouts are racing Steve, Enderman and Creeper cars inspired by the Minecraft video game. Take a look at these awesome Minecraft pinewood derby cars, and then send us a photo of your pinewood derby car using the form at…
So I have what is close to a 5-year plan. And I've had one for several years, and it slowly evolves as the years tick by. But I've often wondered if it is a selfish plan, you see most of it simply involves what awards I can earn for myself.
The Christmas holiday is over and the new year is just a day away. The year of 2014 is coming to an end and like a lot of people I am looking back at its highlights. There are a few that stand out in my Scouting world.
Like most packs I imagine, ours is bad about keeping records and passing info along. I hope our website and handbooks do some of that, but some details get lost over the years (for instance, just about anything prior to 2009 when our first son joined is unknown to me).
I would like to see Cub Scout Pack 68 earn the 2015 Journey To Excellence (JTE) award because I think we can do it. I made this statement during last night's pack committee meeting, and than reviewed the requirements. By the time I finished I believe the committee was in agreement with me.
How to use science to make a faster pinewood derby car A former NASA engineer explains how you can use science to succeed at your next pinewood derby. For seven years, I worked at NASA on the Mars Curiosity rover.
While the Scout Oath and Scout Law will be used in Cub Scouts beginning next year, the current Cub Scout motto, sign, salute and handshake won't change.
Tis the season for all units… in the Central Minnesota Council to complete their recharters. Begin the caroling and pass the eggnog. The new committee of Cub Scout Pack 68 is about to learn how it is done. The recharter was one of the things on the agenda at last Monday night's Pack committee meeting.
It has been an interesting fall as we work to reorganize the leadership of Cub Scout Pack 68 and carry out the new program. It has also been fun and rewarding. The boys have been telling their parents they are having fun.
Cub Scouts Help Paralyzed Dog Get Moving Noah, a 1-year-old Beagle/Dachshund mix, had just hours to live. The poor guy had likely been hit by a car and had lost the use of his back legs. Animal Control workers in Atlanta say he was dragging his back legs around, creating multiple wounds and making his…
I know I’m a hopeless romantic, and I’m aware that I shouldn’t let what I think and feel be the empirical measure for the thoughts and feelings of others. But, I love to share, and the memories of my Den Chief, and much of Scouting, are embodied in Norman Rockwell’s paintings.
