Philmont treks, Northern Tier canoe routes, Sea Base sailing and The Summit. Crews came home with stories, gear lists and training plans, and wrote them all down.
The busy summer season at Philmont Scout Ranch has ended. Though the high-adventure base remains open year-round to host conferences and fall and winter programs, this could be considered a slow time. That makes it the perfect time for new renovation projects at Philmont, such as the camping dining hall kitchen, seen above.
Believe it or not, they actually pay people to work at Philmont. And it gets better: They're hiring. Now's the time for anyone 18 or older to submit an application for next summer. Technically, they accept applications any time of the year, but officials say that applying by Oct.
Experience the beauty of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in the winter. A silent snow covered landscape, with no bugs or people around you. At OKPIK you can: - Cross country ski and snowshoe in the back country. - Camp comfortably in below zero temperatures.
One way to beat the workday blues is daydreaming about spending a week at one of the Boy Scouts of America's three (and soon four ) excellent high-adventure bases. If it's Philmont Scout Ranch that fills your daydreams, today is your lucky day.

The following is an excerpt from the journal I kept during my Boy Scout troop's trek through Philmont Scout Ranch in 1986: Ute Springs Camp was the smallest of the various camps at which we stayed. The site we chose was quite small.
I've been offering Red Cross CPR and First Aid training to scout groups for the past four years. I figured it would be a good way to improve my skills and knowledge, make outings safer, and save the units some money since other people were charging a lot for the training.
Greg, our ranger, left our crew today, August 7, 1986. Before he left he had us sit along the ridge line that overlooked the valley and talked to us about how Philmont is able to stay beautiful and bountiful. He described some of the ways the camp staff preserves the wilderness for future crews to…
Philmont and Northern Tier require Wilderness First Aid certification in each crew. The American Red Cross has offered a course for this certification for a few years, developed by an ARC chapter in North Carolina. This spring, an entirely new, national ARC course titled Wilderness and Remote First Aid takes its place.

Some folks from the Charles L. Sommers Alumni Association have lost their bearings and ended up down at Sea Base for a few days. While I'm sure all of us with snow on the ground would love to be in sunny Florida, we have the next best thing – videos!
-1 Vote On Idea In addition to working for the BSA I am also an assistant scoutmaster with my sons troop. Our Patrol Leader's Council wants to go rafting through the Grand Canyon in 2011. A couple of us dads are looking into the costs and services provided by several of the river outfitters.
As the year 2009 comes to an end, it suddenly dawned on me that this year was the 25th anniversary of my first trip to Philmont Scout Ranch. It was not a trip to partake in a twelve day trek, but to spend a week at the Philmont Training Center (PTC).
What do your Troops do for High Adventure. We do trips that are outside the 'traditional' definition of High Adventure, sure we do Philmont every other year and send Scouts to Boundary Waters and SeaBase either with the Council or set up by the Troop.
The Philmont Staff Association has an informative post about the seasonal staff hiring process to help alleviate any concerns prospective applicants are having. "we do not have a deadline on when applications need to be submitted. Received application information is entered into the database and placed under the department of the first choice, for review.
So we did not get a spot on the 2011 Philmont treks. For the past 6 years we have send 2+ crews to Philmont every other year and I guess our luck has finally run out. The fortunate thing is that our Council has 60 slots in 2011 and we can already easily fill 1…
Our lottery submission for a 2011 Philmont trek wasn't a winner. :-( Got a rejection email yesterday, saying we're on the waitlist, so it's a gloomy day. We had two crews worth of people ready to go. I hope some of you had better luck - let me know.

This week marked the 10 year anniversary of the Texas A&M Bonfire tragedy. The bonfire was an Aggie tradition since 1909, and was a symbol of the burning desire of Texas A&M to beat the University of Texas longhorns. On November 18th, 1999, at 2:42am the stack of logs collapsed killing eleven students and one…

I am missing Philmont and starting to think it is time to go back to Scouting's paradise. Here is a short excerpt from my 1992 Philmont journal: Harlan Camp is a welcome site. My right foot has just joined the left in protest.
Climbing pioneer Royal Robbins was the first to solo climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, but he conquered another mountainous hurdle long before he ever donned a climbing harness: the mean streets of Los Angeles. After a crime-riddled start to his childhood, Robbins found a new passion: the Boy Scouts.
I just received the 2011 Philmont registration packet. It looks like the nice folks at Philmont are making an effort to be a bit more flexible with their height/weight limits for youth, and maybe adults. From the packet: " For participants under 21 years of age who exceed the maximum acceptable weight for height, the Philmont…
As we previously reported, Cracker Barrel is attending the 2009 National Outdoor Adventure Summit all week at Philmont Scout Ranch. We'll be blogging infrequently but Twittering often. Click here for our Twitter page. It's quiet today, so we're meeting to discuss ways to make Scouting magazine even better for readers.
OK, prepare to be jealous after we tell you this: Cracker Barrel will be spending all of next week at Philmont Scout Ranch. We're heading to the 2009 National Outdoor Adventure Summit, an outdoor forum for professional and volunteer Scouters.
This past weekend, the PLC decided to add Philmont to the 2011 calendar so I was online checking for registration dates. If you want to receive a registration packet, you should send a request to [email protected] now. It's also not too early to gather interest from scouts so you can request the right number of…
I recently moved up to a Flickr Pro account so I am playing around with some of the features, one of which is the ability to embed slideshows into blogs and websites. I thought for the first one I would start with the pictures from my first trek to Philmont Scout Ranch with the Boy…

A prime trek in Philmont, the crown jewel of Scout Camps, under crystal blue skies in moderate temperatures with no bugs and five star meals becomes a slow death march with a dysfunctional, poorly prepared, poorly led crew. Likewise a few days hiking in less inspiring environs as it rains day in and day out…
Training and skill development is important to the success of a Troop based high adventure trip. Adult Advisor and Youth Crew Chief Training - All trip leaders should take advantage of online courses offered by the BSA . Troop Based High Adventure - Vision and Leadership
Enough Lilliputian arrows will eventually fell Gulliver just as a phalanx of tiny details can deflate a vision. It is important to establish and protect the vision, to build anticipation and excitement that will motivate Scouts to work their way through to its realization.
Philmont, Seabase and Northern Tier are the three most familiar national High Adventure Bases, there are dozens of other Council Based Programs. Thousands of Scouts participate in and enjoy the big three high adventure bases each year. I have colleagues in Scouting who recommend them highly.
This weekend I completed my 16 hours of Wilderness First Aid training.
