Philmont treks, Northern Tier canoe routes, Sea Base sailing and The Summit. Crews came home with stories, gear lists and training plans, and wrote them all down.
The National Scouting Museum – Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico will open to the public beginning June 8 — just in time for trekkers, families attending conferences and visitors to be among the first to venture into this 19,500-square-foot home of BSA history.
If you’re the man or woman who tracks advancement for your Scout unit, here’s an opportunity to get trained, have fun and spend a week at one of the greatest places in the Scouting universe. When you’re on a list that includes Neil Armstrong, Hank Aaron, Gerald Ford, Bill Gates and Walt Disney, you must have done something right. But “something right” doesn’t begin to describe the 10 volunteers who join the list of Silver Buffalo Award recipients this year.
Ashton Kutcher, star of TV and movies and the original social media influencer who in 2009 became the first account to amass 1 million Twitter followers, was a Scout and hiked at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The star of That ’70s Show took to Twitter on Thursday to offer his support for the…
The Philmont Training Center isn’t the exclusive home of high-level BSA training. Excellent opportunities await at the Summit Bechtel Reserve’s John D. Tickle National Training and Leadership Center in West Virginia. The center has a long name but a simple purpose: Help adults and youth make an even bigger impact on their unit, district or…
From left: Hartley, Darcy and Mykal Phinney went on a Philmont trek together in July 2015. On May 12, 2012, Darcy Phinney’s life changed forever. Darcy and her entire family were headed home from a golf tournament when a teenager who was texting while driving hit their minivan head-on.
Cheerful service doesn’t take a week off — not even for spring break. Arrowmen from as far away as Minnesota and Colorado traveled to the Florida Sea Base in March to complete a week of hurricane cleanup. They called this giant spring break service project SeaBreak.
Six conferences being offered at the Philmont Training Center this summer are about training. Getting trained on training at the Philmont Training Center? Now that’s meta. If your Scouting job involves training other leaders, you should consider attending one of these volunteer development conferences, supported by ScoutingU’s Learning Delivery Team.
The six young people selected to serve on the 2018-2019 National Venturing Officers’ Association will play a critical role. With the support of adult volunteers and professionals, they will shape Venturing’s future, make important decisions and serve as Venturing’s public face.
Please join us in congratulating Chasity McReynolds, who will serve as Director of the Office of Philanthropy at the BSA National Service Center, effective April 1, 2018. Chasity has served with distinction in this department as a major gift director since January 2010.
Photo by Clay Helfrick Those dense crowds, long wait times and expensive ticket prices can take a hike. This summer, choose the ultimate family vacation. Choose Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Philmont Family Adventure , new for 2018, gives families the chance to experience Philmont however they want.
You and your entire family (yes, you read that right – the whole family!) are invited to experience the best that Philmont Scout Ranch has to offer by attending this summer’s new Philmont Scout Ranch Family Adventure program! Whether you’ve been to Philmont or not, this summer experience is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced in Scouting.
Leave your good jeans at home. The Summit Bechtel Reserve’s Polaris ATV Trek , a new offering for 2018, puts Scouts and Venturers in control of their own all-terrain vehicle for a gritty week of riding the trails. Participants get hands-on-handlebars training in safe ATV operation before heading out for 60-plus miles of riding.
Photo by Kaitlyn Chaballa It’s one of the most relaxing, affordable and memorable ways to get to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. And thanks to a new federal grant, the Amtrak Southwest Chief will continue transporting Scouts to Philmont for the foreseeable future.
When you hear the word “adventure,” what comes to mind? Maybe it’s a trek across new terrain. Perhaps it’s the wide-open sea. Or maybe it’s even a journey through the world of STEM. Everyone has a different idea of adventure, and just as every adventure is unique, so is every family.
To show our thanks to all adult volunteers, unit leaders, and BSA staff members, the National Jamboree and Outdoor Adventures teams are excited to announce the first Adult Adventure Weekend, planned for June 20-24, 2018 , at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve.
Throughout your time as a Scouter, you’ve helped young people shine. You’ve watched them plan trips — and then driven them safely to their destination. You’ve mentored from the sidelines as they take on top leadership roles. You’ve smiled with pride as they enjoyed one life-changing adventure after another.
A Boy Scout from Washington, D.C., and a Venturer from Cincinnati were selected to join a leg of National Geographic Fellow Paul Salopek’s 21,000-mile walk around the world . Christopher Sherman and Miciah Thacker penned thoughtful essays reflecting on their experiences at Philmont and the 2017 National Jamboree, respectively.
Sea Base Capt. Steve Cansler, who ran the Bahamas-based sailing adventures at the BSA’s Florida Sea Base, died Dec. 24, 2017. He was 65. During Capt. Steve’s time in the Bahamas, countless Scouts and Venturers arrived with high expectations but little sailing experience.
They’re carried on Philmont’s trails and clipped to canoe thwarts at Northern Tier. You’ll find them on every Florida Sea Base trek and Summit Bechtel Reserve adventure, too. But you might be surprised to learn that Nalgene water bottles were created as lab equipment — not camping gear.
Editor’s note: This guest blog post was written by Suzanne Tiernan, communications director for the Sea Base Alumni and Friends Association. First, there was Hurricane Harvey. The news was full of damage reports and people helping each other. Then came Hurricane Irma.
Escape the chill of winter while acquiring the latest tools to help your Scout unit succeed. That’s the promise of a volunteer training conference at the Florida Sea Base. Pick from five weeklong conferences, each held in January 2018 at the BSA’s Florida home.
At first I thought it was a misprint. In several places on the Northern Tier website, participants are told not to bring waterproof boots. The Northern Tier National High Adventure Program involves canoeing around the beautiful lakes and rivers of Minnesota and Canada.

Left and middle: Sea Base staff members inspected Big Munson Island on Monday. Right: The storm surge washed a boat ashore Big Munson Island. There were no people inside, and Sea Base staffers reported its location to the Coast Guard.
Each time I share an update about how the Florida Sea Base is recovering after Hurricane Irma, the comments pour in. Everyone wants to know how they can help Sea Base get back to doing what it does best: offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences for young people.

Guest post: This story of an Eagle Scout’s heroism at Philmont Scout Ranch was written by Jane Parikh, public relations manager for the Michigan Crossroads Council. Josiah Bakker isn’t a doctor, but the Eagle Scout from Suttons Bay, Mich., knew exactly what to do when a Philmont hiker showed up on the front porch of…
Photo by Evan Winter Scouting’s programs and values are best delivered outdoors. It’s been that way since the worldwide youth movement was just a twinkle in Baden-Powell’s eye. But things have changed since Baden-Powell invented the program that became the Boy Scouts of America.
It was the kind of once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ll only find in Scouting. Five Venturers from Crew 999 of Plano, Texas, spent a week in the U.S. Virgin Islands earlier this summer. The five young women, joined by three female adult leaders, sailed to beautiful beaches where they hiked, swam, snorkeled and toured historic sites.
On Wednesday, some 25,000 Jamboree participants will join the 6,000 staffers already onsite at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. Volunteer staff members, who expended their own money and vacation time to be here, have spent the past weeks, months and years preparing for this quadrennial event.
The 2017 National Jamboree will be the most-shared Jamboree in history. Scouts, Venturers, staffers and visitors will write blog updates, stream live video and post to a number of social networks, including some that were relatively unknown four years ago at the 2013 National Jamboree.
It’s hard to believe, but the 2017 National Jamboree is less than a month out. If you’re heading to Scouting’s main event in the hills of West Virginia, (or even if you’re still on the fence about making the trip as a visitor to spend a day or two at the Summit Bechtel Family National…
Dan Moore, a volunteer in the BSA’s Montana Council, has seen his share of first-rate trails for all-terrain vehicles. He even helped build five miles of ATV trails at a Scout camp in Montana. All this experience means that if you want to get Moore’s heart racing these days, your ATV trail better be world…
It could be the most epic summer in Scouting history. Ben Pycraft, a 19-year-old Eagle Scout from North Ridgeville, Ohio, will travel solo to all four BSA high-adventure bases this summer. But, true to Scouting values, the trip isn’t all about Ben.
Some have names you know: Robert Baden-Powell, Charles Lindbergh, Hank Aaron. Others are Scouters whose names are less universally known but whose impact on Scouting has been just as transformative. Their common bond: the Silver Buffalo Award — the Boy Scouts of America’s highest honor for adult volunteers.
Philmont is a land of starlit skies, aspen-covered hills and wind in whisp’ring pines. That’s how John Westfall, who wrote “The Philmont Hymn,” described the Scouting paradise in New Mexico. Westfall was a teenager in 1945 when he wrote the song.
If you have a passion for Scouting and love to take photographs, then make plans to attend the Visual Storytelling Workshop at Philmont Training Center, August 6-12, 2017. There, you’ll learn how to capture and share decisive moments in Scouting to help with recruiting and retention.
Consider for a moment how many images you come across in a single day. Add up each post on Facebook and Twitter and Snapchat and Instagram and Pinterest and … That’s the cluttered online landscape into which those of us who want to grow Scouting must venture.

Scouting Heritage merit badge requirement 4B asks Scouts to write or visit the National Scouting Museum in Texas. As the museum prepares to relocate to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, the procedure for completing this requirement has changed. Effective April 1, 2017, Scouts seeking information for this requirement should send correspondence to Philmont at…
Fifty years, to the day, after an Eagle Scout was the first human to set foot on the moon, the Boy Scouts of America will create a permanent high-adventure base there. Tranquility High Adventure Base — the fifth jewel in BSA’s high-adventure crown — will open July 20, 2019.
We’re mere months away from the summer, aka the Greatest Scouting Season. And while it’s too early to pack your bags and load the trailer, the time is right for one essential step in summer Scouting preparation. It’s time to get your physical.
The Scouts of Troop 251 — now full-grown adults with Scouts of their own — wanted to host a reunion of their 1981 Sea Base crew. They read the Bryan on Scouting post about the Philmont crew from Tennessee that re-created a photo taken 34 years earlier, and they wanted to do the same.
