Ticket items, critters, beads and the Gilwell song. Wood Badge left a mark on almost every Scouter who took it, and course participants and staff wrote about it often.
Would you like to serve on Wood Badge staff?" It was one of the easiest questions I've ever been asked. It sounds sentimental, but the truth is I had never really left Wood Badge, at least in my mind. That made saying "yes" to Debbie Sullivan, course director for the upcoming Wood Badge course this…
For those of you that have been to Wood Badge you understand the great training, the lasting friendships, and the spirit of Scouting that comes in every Wood Badge course. You get idea that every Scout deserves a trained leader and that in Wood Badge you are participating in the Advanced Leadership Course of the…
I used to be a Staffer, a good old Staffer too, But now I've finished Staffing, I don't know what to do… I just finished my first Wood Badge course as a member of the staff. What a great spirit that is felt during those few days of training.
Wood Badge Wednesdays, Vol. 5: Leading to Make a Difference
It's amazing how quickly a whisper turns into a roar. Take Wood Badge tickets, for example. Each one leaves a lasting legacy, but 50, 500, or even 5,000? That kind of impact reverberates across the Scouting universe for generations. At my Wood Badge course in August, 50 Scouters each crafted five tickets.
In Scouting, as in life, change is inevitable. You've got new merit badges, new locations for campouts, new roles in your unit, new health and safety regulations, and more. That makes change the only fact of life guaranteed to never change.
I attended Wood Badge in 2005. I was in my 2nd year as a Scoutmaster and the troop was growing. I had a real strong group of Scouting friends that all encouraged me to get to Wood Badge as soon as possible.
As Models for Success go, it's tough to top course Scoutmaster John Stone (left) and Senior Patrol Leader Bill Hemenway. As anyone who's watched Survivor can attest, grouping a bunch of people together and giving them a name doesn't make them an effective team.
I'm one of those guys that thinks every Scouter should go to Wood Badge. It is fantastic training that will bless the lives of not only those who take the course, but all those with whom they interact afterward. I believe it made me a better person and helped me improve my Venturing crew more…
Wood Badge Wednesdays, Vol. 2: Bringing the Vision to Life
I've been involved in Scouting for more than 20 years, and I love trivia. At Wood Badge, those two forces collided, resulting in one giant, flaming ball of disappointment and public shame. I don't want to say too much and spoil a Wood Badge surprise, but let's just say that my Scouting knowledge was put…
Growing up, one thing always perplexed me about our home: What's with all the owls? We lived in an owlery, it seemed. Owls in every room. I saw owl belt buckles, owl clocks, owl paperweights, owl postcards, plush owl toys - pretty much everything short of a real bird in a cage.
Wood Badge is Scouting's premier adult leader training. It was a mystery to me before I took the course, but it turned out to be simple to understand and very useful to my work in
I'm sure anyone reading this post has heard the term "super-scouter." It may have even been applied to you. I think there are some who are starting to apply it to me and I'm not sure I like it. The term almost always comes across with a slightly negative connotation.
Todos los Scouts se merece un líder entrenado. In other words, "Every Scout deserves a trained leader." The statement is true in any language, and now, Scout leaders who are more comfortable speaking Spanish can take the highest level of adult leader training, Wood Badge, at a first-of-its-kind Spanish-language Wood Badge course.
On Saturday I attended my first staff development meeting for this year's Wood Badge course. I get to be a Troop Guide for the second year in a row. Which means, I already have all my presentations basically ready--I just need to do some tweaking.
Well its been about a week since the last post.. Gilwell called, and I answered! I got back last night from a week out on the Oregon Coast for Wood Badge W1-492-11. It was the first session of the course and my first shot at staffing Scouting's best training course.
Horsemanship Merit Badge Wood Badge is finally over. After all these years, waiting for the calendar to sync up with an available slot in the class, yesterday we left Gilwell. I have to admit, it was nice to make new Scouting friends, and get to know more people that have our kids best interest, and…
Golf Merit Badge Illness is finally passing by. Just worn out now! Wood Badge fires up at bright and early in the morning, so I'll be pulling out of the driveway by 5:15. Am I finished and ready to go?
Unlike the Jamboree experience, which yielded a count down to the event (which everyone seemed to love), putting together a great Troop, heading out to the East Coast for tours and a fantastic week of the greatest single Scouting event I have been to, and memories for a life time.
This is the site that I have been using lately...especially now that I have paid my fees. I am getting really excited... Wood Badge - Advance Training for Adult Leaders
Days 4, 5, and 6 were eventful and plenty of good Scouting Moments... Unfortunately I have not taken the time, till now to sit down and jot down the thoughts... well I am going to claim that time and space was the reason.
I have been invited to serve as a Troop Guide for the upcoming Wood Badge course! I am extremely excited about the opportunity, yet another way to influence and share my love for the Scouting program. I tried to serve on the last two course, but because of the National Jamboree schedule of training, outings…
Its been over three years since I became an Assistant Scout Master in our troop. That entire time I have been effectively stalked to go to Wood Badge. Each time it came up, there was something always in the way; which didn't entirely disappoint me.
Sept. 2010 Time to carve: 3 hours Finishing: 1.5 hours Now if you follow my inconstant posts, you might have wondered where have I been? Well the answer is that I've been busy with Wood Badge. In fact I write this on the eve before my second weekend.
Welcome back to the Scoutmaster Minute… In this show we talk about Wood Badge for the 21st Century. Scott and I are both proud members of the Beaver Patrol and in this show we share some of our Wood Badge Experience as well as talk about what Wood Badge offers to all Scouters.
I used to be an Eagle... I went through Wood Badge in 2008. I always wanted to do it and finally found the time. I was very glad I did. Not only did I get the usual RECHARGE that many Scouters in the program get, I also made some life long friends.
What an incredible week of Scouting: Wednesday: arrived at Camp Belzer in to help finish up set up for Wood Badge C-33-10 - attended Wood Badge Staff dinner - received my 3rd Bead, then the Course Director gave us all a gift of Wood Badge Beads from Gilwell Park!
Today was the first day of Wood Badge course. I was very happy to get a great group. They are enthusiastic and energetic. My 1st presentation went off well and I was very relived. Day 2 starts in 6 hours so off to bed.
I took the Boy Scouts of America's Woodbadge training course for adult leaders in 1988. I was a member of the Bobwhite Patrol. I was the patrol's historian so I took a lot of pictures over the three weekends. I finally found time to scan my Woodbadge photographs this summer.
-1 Vote On Idea With the emphsis on Scout Leaders going to Wood Badge, especially Jamboree Leaders, please bring back the hiking stick medallions AND the Wood Badge Afghan. Comments (1) Volunteers
4 Vote On Idea Having a knot for those of us who have completed the training, and be able to distinguish the difference between two, three, and four bead recipients. This can be done a couple of ways: 1) Have a "base knot" for just compleating the course, and devices for staff and scoutmasters.
I did my Woodbadge course in the fall of 1988. Yes, that was long before the current "Woodbadge for the 21st Century", but I have a feeling the core training is still pretty much the same. The course was held at Camp Stearns in central Minnesota.
I have been a strong proponent of leadership training ever since I went though my new leader essentials training as a Tiger Coach and that was several years ago and I have since learned through my interaction with my scout friends in other countries (I have been involved in communication with some 35 countries with…
The Friday that I had been both dreading and excited about had arrived. It was time to go to the first weekend of Woodbadge training at Camp Stearns in central Minnesota. I was dreading it because I did not know if I would know anyone in attendance other than Paul, the culprit who signed me…
I was beginning to feel a little burned out after serving as the scoutmaster of Troop 68 for six years in the fall of 1987. I told Paul, a great Scouting friend of mine, how I was feeling about Scouting.
Be proud of those Wood Badge beads around your neck. It was no small task to earn them. But now we bet you're hungry for even more high-level leadership training. Until last year, your options were few and far between, but not anymore.
-1 Vote On Idea How about rescinding the decision to award Wood Badge beads to qualifying NYLT Scoutmasters and Asst. Scoutmasters (see the syllabus)? Perhaps Baden Powell did award the beads to trainers of other courses, but he doesn't have to deal with the furor of many of our Wood Badge volunteers.
Yesterday I attended the new Nationally required Trainers EDGE course. It is a requirement for all Scouters that wish to Staff for Wood Badge. It was just what I needed to get my Scouting Batteries charged and pumped to take another path on Scouting's amazing trail.
Bay-Lakes Council, located in Wisconsin, will offer a week-long Wood Badge course this August, running from Monday through Saturday, to enable participation from scouters who faith practices do not permit/enable Sunday activities. It will be at Cub Scout World Camp Rokilio, near Kiel east of Lake Winnebago.
Last spring I went to Woodbadge, I thought about my ticket items for nearly a month between weekends. I have items that enhance me and ones that enhance the program. I'm not struggling with my ticket items but i'm not progressing really well either.
-4 Vote On Idea I suspect that the time for Wood Badge has run its course in the BSA. The fraternal format of the program acts more as a social program than productive training. Let's pull the valuable and effective leadership materials that are in the course, and infuse it into a new format.
Per our council : 21ST CENTURY WOOD BADGE Wood Badge is leadership training for all Scout Leaders who are involved in the programs of the Boy Scouts of America – Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing, as well as council and district leaders, and professionals.
There is a website that is starting up from the Scout Association (SA) in the United Kingdom (England). My friend in England, Nick posted about this on his blog , so I thought I would get the word out to more of our American readers.
