20 Vote On Idea It seems a little confusing that volunteers can't have one member ID number that follows them through their lifetimes like a social security number. Being in a district that borders two other councils, I have several volunteers with multiple IDs which creates more work for them in transferring training records, advancement…
17 Vote On Idea We have this new improved Medical Form that was supposed to be the one for all! But now we understand that the Philmont contingent must use a differant form. Can we go to one? Comments (1) Other
Our monthly Troop Committee meeting was last night. While a Troop should be Scout-led any very successful Troop has a well organized Troop Committee behind it. Last night's meeting was an odd one in the fact that the usual suspects were not in attendance.
This announcement only effects those orders that individual Scouts get online. This does not effect the Spring or Fall popcorn sale by Units. Beginning December 26, 2009, the first day of Trail's End's 2010 fiscal year, the commission from Trail's End online sales will change to the following structure: 2010 2009 Council 30% 30% Units…
Yes, it has been awhile since Buttons and Steve have posted an episode to the Around The Scouting Campfire podcast. But your wait is over. Show #10 is ready to download and enjoy. During this show Buttons, the radical Boy Scout, talks to Scoutmaster Steve about his next merit badge.
Around The Scouting Campfire #10 Saving the memories, a Scout Law song at camp, Buttons and Randall and jokes, a Thanksgiving prayer. Yes, it has been awhile since Buttons and Steve have posted an episode to the Around The Scouting Campfire podcast.
Tonight I listened to the BSA Centennial Kickoff program and I was pretty excited about the things to come within the BSA program and yet I was saddened to think that there would be no time to reflect back on scouting's past 100's .
Scouts serve their communities all year long but the holidays present many special opportunities for helping make the season special for everyone. Last year our Patrol leader's Council contacted a local service agency and committed to providing gifts for several families in need.
Scouting is something that stays with you all your life.
Service is a big part of Scouting, service to one's self, one's Troop and one's Community. This is the season of giving and many people do their annual thing around this time, be it a Giving Tree or Adopt-a-Family for the Holidays.
We are happy to announce the completion of a new process that allows for single t-shirts to be printed: Digital Printing. Customers have been asking for this for a long time now and, well… One of our first digitally printed shirts!
Well last night was, I guess, the "Official Kick off" of the Centennial celebration of the Boy Scouts of America!! Extremely exciting I kept thinking to myself as I listened in on to the online rally last night. Listening to the vision and excitement of the presenters.
Here is a post I recently made on the 2010 National Jamboree Group. The group was debating the whether or not youth should bring cell phones to the jamboree. I personally believe we should but then again many scouts are against it.
I missed the podcast last night, because I had a Scout function and dinner come up at the last minute. This is most unfortunate but I want to get the opinion of scouters and youth alike on how they think the audiocast went.
National Council has come out and suggested three trainings that are avialable online for jamboree staff should complete. These courses include: 1. 2010 National Scout Jamboree Staff Orientation This orientation course was developed to help you understand your role as a staff member, learn what you need to do to prepare for your jamboree experience…

Our lottery submission for a 2011 Philmont trek wasn't a winner. :-( Got a rejection email yesterday, saying we're on the waitlist, so it's a gloomy day. We had two crews worth of people ready to go. I hope some of you had better luck - let me know.
So we did not get a spot on the 2011 Philmont treks. For the past 6 years we have send 2+ crews to Philmont every other year and I guess our luck has finally run out. The fortunate thing is that our Council has 60 slots in 2011 and we can already easily fill 1…
Were you able to listen live to the 100th Anniversary Kickoff audiocast yesterday? For those following @scoutingnews you may have caught that I was unable to get the streaming media playing here at my location in Iraq due to network restrictions, luckily @boyscouts was "tweeting" the main points.
I should have put the link in for the audio cast of the Boy Scouts of America's Celebration Kick Off. If you missed it on the 10th.. you can hear the entire program at AUDIO CAST! Bravo to Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive Tico Perez, National Commissioner John Gottschalk, BSA National President Jack Furst, National…

Why don't we have a sewing merit badge? There should be a skateboarding merit badge. When will we have a hunting merit badge? Have you ever had or heard similar questions? Well, BSA has posted an email address where you can start the process of creating a new merit badge.

Today was the Eagle Court of Honor for 5 incredible Scouts. While I have just only been their Scoutmaster since March I have known and worked with them all for several years. It was a great celebration of several Scouting careers.

Read the latest Ask Andy column at http://netcommish.com/askandy198.asp and find the answer to this and other questions: Our troop's having a disagreement about Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chit patches. I've always though that these were like merit badges, that the card and the patch go together.
People from all 50 states and several countries tuned in to the National 100th Anniversary Audiocast Kick-Off Rally last Thursday. In all, 50,000 Scouts, Scouters, alumni, and parents were present for the virtual event. Were you at the big party?
Here at ClassB, the majority of our custom t-shirts are created using the screen printing technique. Screen printing involves the passing of ink through a mesh screen onto which a film image has been applied. Screen printing allows for large, bulk quantities of shirts to be produced at a single time.
When you have been a scoutmaster for as long as I have been, nearly 29 years, you see a lot of boys go and go through the Scouting program. Some do very well in Scouting, some not so well. Some boys stick with it until their eighteenth birthday, some only last for a few months.
Cub Scouts 2010 - if you're a Cub Scout leader, you really should check this out. It is a new step in the evolution of the Cub Scouting program that's been tested the last few years, resulting in huge increases in retention of scouts.
What do your Troops do for High Adventure. We do trips that are outside the 'traditional' definition of High Adventure, sure we do Philmont every other year and send Scouts to Boundary Waters and SeaBase either with the Council or set up by the Troop.

I heard an inspirational message from Lou Holtz, former great Football Coach. He took great pride in teaching young men to be outstanding athletes, citizens, and gentlemen. He shares three keys to success in life.. this is time tested and true.
The Boy Scouts of America and parades go together like New Year's Day and the Rose Bowl. In January, all four unite in a moment you can't miss. To celebrate the BSA's 100th Anniversary, the Orange County, Los Angeles Area, and San Gabriel Valley councils have joined the National Council to create a one-of-a-kind float…
2 Vote On Idea One item we now present to an out-going council president is a hard bound photo album. Many options are available online and offer considerable ease in building an album visually showing the key highlights of an "administration".
0 Vote On Idea Very soon, if it hasn't happened already, The Post Office is going to require that all bulk mail addresses be verified through the National Change Of Address database (NCOAlink). This database confirms that an address is current for an individual based on the change of address information the Post Office receives.
I got my Christmas present early, and decided to do a quick review on it God Bless my mom, she got me some new gear for my pack, a Brunton Lucy Lantern. It's lightweight and runs on the fuel canisters that I am already carrying in my pack.

Bears, Bears and more Bears….and not the Cub Scout kind I had the opportunity to record a presentation with Cliff Jacobson, avid outdoorsman and canoeist. He tells some stories, some jokes, and how to protect your food and yourself from bears.
Last night was our annual Holiday Party. 70 Scouts gathered for the meeting, broke into Patrols to finish planning for our Lock In Saturday and then came back in for our Holiday Party. Every Scout brought a gift for a needy child, every Scout brought a gift for the Troop Gift Exchange, every Scout brought…
1 Vote On Idea Maybe it is time to offer membership to youth who's families are dropping out due to busy schedules by expanding the Lone Scout & Counselor program. Families could be given the opportunity to continue in Scouting for a year or two while their son is not in a Pack.
Post a short caption for this photo. Captions should be funny and entertaining. Friday, at 5:00PM, a winning caption will be chosen. Winners will receive a $50 coupon good for custom designed shirts for a group, or a digitally printed shirt. Have fun! We look forward to the captions!
At some point on Monday, i recorded my 10,000th hit on my blog! This figure is based on the Wordpress stats that have been recorded since January 2008, although my Feedproxy stats give a totally different figure! So to everyone who has stopped by and read or listened to what I have to say – a…
My Group's Assistant Scout Leader popped round to see me last night to drop off some Christmas cards and let me know how the Troop was getting on in my absence (I'm taking a break from day to day Scouting for the next month or so for obvious reasons).
According to the Scout Law, a Boy Scout is "Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent." But does he stay that way as he grows up? That's a question never scientifically studied — until now.

ABC 4 News has a story about some Scouts in Utah who teamed up with Mr. and Mrs. Claus and a handful of pilots: Instead of a sleigh – Santa is using a Cessna. And Santa has a lot of help - a half dozen boy scouts and a handful of volunteer pilots.
You tell your Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers that Scouting will help them become better men and women well beyond their adolescent years. What's your proof? It's mainly the anecdotal evidence of 100 years of great Scouting alumni and their profound impact on the country, right?
Of course, you've probably already heard all about the Boy Scouts of America celebrating it's 100th Anniversary ! But just in case you missed out, here are a few of the many BSA 100th Anniversary programs: The Generations Connection program was launched in April 2009.
17 Vote On Idea It would be great if the councils could save each years tour permits and start each new year out fresh. It would be easier to find the new ones submitted since they seem to be sorted by month and day only. Comments (0) Other
This is an Eagle Scout! Tonight at the District Eagle Boards of Review this Scout passed with flying colors. When the his Court of Honor rolls around we will talk about his time in Scouting, his Merit Badges, the Leadership he provided, his Nights Camping, the High Adventures he went on, etc.
Well, the food was great, the Scouts received their well-deserved awards, and the bidding at the Scout Bucks auction was intense. This year, we had several tables of goodies for the Scouts to bid on. The bids came quickly and furiously, with no quarter given.

2 Vote On Idea To address the problem of displaying more than one Silver Arrow Point on the Cub Scout uniform shirt, why not have a "Bronze Arrow Point" to stand for "Three (3) or more Arrow Points." This would require only three arrow points to be displayed for each Cub Scout rank, thus allowing…
John Alline, the Jamboree Division Director, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on December 19, 2009. Mr. Alline was 58 years old. Mr. Alline was a 36-year employee of the Boy Scouts of America and was currently the Director of the National Jamboree.
APPRECIATE THE JOURNEY…………… Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vintage point.
At its most elementary level then we can define game as an exercise of voluntary control systems in which there is an opposition between forces, confined by a procedure and rules in order to produce a disequilibrial outcome." Avedon and Smith Play and games are valued as vital contributors to our development as humans.

I was looking in my bookcase the other day and came across a book by a hero of mine that I'd forgotten I had. 'Great Contemporaries' by Winston S. Churchill is a series of essays he wrote in the late 1920's and early 1930's about famous people (Douglas Haig, Adolph Hitler, Franklin D.
