5 Vote On Idea Several chartered organizations have requested that the council notify them once a new adult's application has been accepted - so that they can restrict new adults from being active leaders until the background process is complete. Could the registrars' system somehow facilitate this?

Beginning in 1910, the founders of the Boy Scouts of America set out to create a program to enrich the lives of young people. It was no easy task, but their efforts paid off-big time. Each year since, thousands of Scouts and Scouters have followed in the founders' footsteps by creating a new Scouting unit.

Today I: Spent a lot of time thinking about the 100 Days of Scouting project. I wanted it to make a difference in Scouting, for my Scouts, and for me personally. At this point, I hope that has happened. We'll see what seeds sprout.
April 1, 2010 Time to carve: 4 hours Finishing:4 hours An extremely hard slide to carve since it has intricate materials that have traveled between here in Mass to Florida so many times... Sorry a late April fool's joke on my sister-in-law.
Early May 2010 Time to carve:2.5 hours Finishing:.5 Another slight diversion but a very useful one. While in Mystic, I picked up a book on carving Wood Spirits and with a request from my wife decided to give it a try.
Early May 2010 Time to carve: 1.5 hours Finishing: 1.5 hour ...meanwhile. This slide was carved from a 1 1/2 inch poplar dowel. The center is made using a "chip" method while the top and bottom is finished. Painted with craft paints then the seeds and stem (from a real apple) are glued in place.A…

1937 Jamboree Patch (Real) On June 30th, 1937 The first National Jamboree was held in Washington, DC at the invitation of President Roosevelt. 536 Councils were represented at this important moment in the history of Scouting. The patch for the first National Jamboree featured the compass design, much like the 1935 issue, however, instead of…
100 Days of Scouting has come to a close. It began with the centennial anniversary of Scouting in the United States. The original idea was to motivate people--and especially me--to make sure we did something to improve the Scouting universe each day.
Early 2010 Time to carve: 0 hours Metal work: 2 hours Finishing: 0 hours Also while in Mystic, I picked up a couple of arrowheads at a gift shop with a few different slides. I been waiting to make this slide for awhile now and the arrowhead was the last missing piece.
Mid May 2010 Time to carve: 1.5 hours Finishing: 1.5 hour With the deadline for the deposit for a Wood Badge class I am going to take, I had an idea for my next slide. Now I don't know just which patrol I will be in but this slide might my critter.
Once again, I find myself way behind in the maintaining the blog and once again, it is not for a lack of ideas, thoughts, or want to... well anyway, lets get on with it... Last night I had the pleasure of practicing one of the great truisms of Scouting..
When I was a Boy Scout in the mid 1970's we needed to earn belt loops called skill awards for the first three ranks. Each skill award was based on a certain set of skills, such as camping, hiking, or swimming.
Mid May 2010 Time to carve: 4 hours Finishing: 1.5 hour When I was looking for a piece of wood for this slide, I knew it had to be a hardwood but try as I might, I didn't have a thick enough piece.
The Citizenship Skill Award was probably the first skill award I earned when I was a Boy Scout in the mid 1970's. In fact, it was probably the first Boy Scout award I earned since it was required for the rank of Tenderfoot Scout.
As the Project 100 Days draws to an end I reflected on what has come before: - was asked (and agreed) to teach Scoutmaster Specific Training at Summer Camp for Main Camp Scouters this summer - made Facebook friends with several more Wood Badge participants - talked with CC about upcoming project for the Troop - worked on a…

After getting off to a great start in 1937, the Scout 1950 Jamboree Patch Jamboree was disrupted for more than a decade by World War II. 22 Vote On Idea It seems that with local Council cooperation, it should be easy to determine who the longest tenured Scout in the nation is. I'm sure it's some 102 year old gentleman in Iowa or something, but it would be great to get some PR on this fellow into the national news to…

In April 2006 I started this blog as a bit of an experiment to see what all this blogging stuff was about. Since then I have managed to write 500 posts which I'm quite impressed at! Back then it was very general, but now it's just about Scouting.

The third of the skill awards (alphabetically) is the Communications Skill award. As I was looking over the requirements I remembered the Scouts completing one requirement during a court of honor opening in the early 1980's by introducing themselves to the parents and family members by using sign language.
14 Vote On Idea Is there any way to set the RSS feed to include the subject line? It's difficult sometimes to connect comments with their original subject, especially when you're required to log in to view them which brings you to the main screen rather than the article you were looking for.
First off thanks to all you who visited over the past 100 days. And thank you to "Scoutsigns" and all the other 100 Day Scouters (and Scouts) for sharing their journeys as well! As I logged on each day and recapped the previous day of Scouting I thought a) MAN this is more work then…
When the skill award program existed during the 1970-1980's there was one skill award that was not very popular with the Boy Scouts of Troop 68. The Community Living Skill Award was not the most earned belt loop of the twelve.
After a nine-month hiatus, we're bringing back our Knot of the Week feature for a special look at the Silver Buffalo Award , just in time for the BSA National Annual Meeting, going on now in Dallas. Each year at the meeting's closing banquet, recipients of the Silver Buffalo Award are recognized.
The "Golden Jubilee" Year Jamboree Patch Colorado Springs was the location the Scouts chose to celebrate their 5th National Jamboree and part of their 50th "Golden Jubilee" Anniversary. For this reason, the Jamboree was moved up a year. A dramatic flag raising representing 50 states took place in the morning, followed by fireworks.
We all know there is an oil spill in the Gulf. We all know it is still not plugged. It's been a month and it's no longer such big news, but more of an ongoing problem. It's sad how we get used to something so quickly.
Welcome back the Scoutmaster Minute. In this show we are revisiting an older show of mine, show number 4. It seems so long ago. This podcast focuses on Bullying. With the new Scout requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class all centered on Bullying, it was time to get a podcast out there.

1964 Jamboree Patch "Strengthen America's Heritage" was the theme for this Jamboree. The Scouts participated in a showcase of Scouting skills, such as camping, demonstrating how the knowledge a Scout acquires can help strengthen the country's heritage. The program's goal was to show how Scouting could preserve America's heritage of freedom and pass it down…

I got a Food dehydrator this year and have been experimenting with many new recipes for the trail. I found this cool video on You tube. Great ideas and great meal.. I tried it. Have a Great Scouting day!
In the past, our popular Name That Council challenge was just a fun Friday diversion. The winner's name was mentioned on the blog, but that was it. This week, it gets serious. Because starting today, one lucky winner each week will get a prize.
The Jamboree in 1969 took place in Farragut State Park, Idaho and featured a popular Jamboree Wide Game. If a Scout successfully completed the game, they earned a strip with the "Building To Serve" logo that could be added to the bottom of the attractive "Jambo" pocket patch for that year.

Did you know handmade alcohol stoves are against BSA policy? Did you know it is against BSA policy for your OA chapter to use handcrafted smudge pots? Did you know that huge closing bonfire at summer camp that springs to life quickly because of the liquid fuel 'starter' is against BSA policy?
This past weekend the OA lodge held their annual spring fellowship and induction weekend. This fellowship was held at our council's cub camp, Camp Kingsley. So I arrived Friday night with our lodge chief and his brother and we Began unloading the smudge pots and regalia for the ceremonies.
Does conservation come to mind when you think about Boy Scouting? It probably does to most people. Conservation has been a part of the Boy Scout program since its beginning in 1910, one hundred years ago. What we think about conservation has changed somewhat as a society and Scouting has been right there to lead…
After we posted the information and pictures of the damage supposedly caused by a Brown Recluse Spider bite, we were informed that the pictures are of the damage caused by a MRSA infection, which followed a probable spider bite, which in turn may or may not have been from a Brown Recluse.
We've been informed of a major change to the Youth Protection Training Requirements, in a letter from the Assistant Chief Scout Executive. New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training before they submit their application for registration.
Every Memorial Day, the Scouts of Troop 199 gather on Saturday morning at Oaklawn Cemetery to honor our passed Veterans. We take a small American Flag and place it at the headstone of every Veteran there. This year was a little different in that the SPL and Scouts actually ran the entire Service Project.
Learning to cook is an important part of the Boy Scout program. After all, a hot meal on a cool damp camping weekend helps to brighten the day. Besides, I do not know many teenage boys who do not like to eat.

Congratulations to Dale Coyne Racing team for finishing 4th at Indy. It was fun watching a BSA indy car race around the track in an event that was seemingly more a chess match than the "floor it and go!" racing I have seen recently.
