Quote of the Week- Time Management (opens in a new tab)

Scouting Maniac ·

Ordinary people think merely of spending time. Great people think of using it. Author Unknown Once you have mastered time, you will understand how true it is that most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year - and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade!

What's in your Backpack?

The Scoutmaster Minute ·

My latest podcast is all about gear and what's in your Backpack. A good discussion with the Assistant Scoutmaster's of Troop 664 and me. We had a blast recording it and think that there is some good information in the show for you.

legal name vs nickname: searching

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea As with viewing multiple addresses in a search, I believe it would be beneficial to also see a Nickname for an individual. Many times a person submits their legal name for registration, but is submitted for FOS using their nickname.

Merit Badge Requirement Updates

BSA Innovation Engine ·

2 Vote On Idea I had a leader ask me about how to know which merit badge books and their requirements are up to date and which are out of date. I told him that probably the easiest way would be to look in a current edition of the merit badge requirement book and take…

Sweep Potato Game (opens in a new tab)

The Trainer's Corner Blog ·

Hello fellow Scouters, One game that my two dens used to enjoy playing was a game we called "Sweep Potato". It was a fairly easy game to play, and the boys always enjoyed it. I picked up a couple of cheap brooms from a discount store, and a couple of large, similar-sized potatoes (one broom…

Scouts get the EDGE (opens in a new tab)

ScoutSigns ·

The new BSA rank requirements will have the Scouts using EDGE to train less experienced Scouts. EDGE is taught in the National Youth Leadership Training course. This is offered in councils all across the country. EDGE stands for: Explain, Demonstrate, Guide and Enable Explain--tell the Scout what you are going to do, how you will…

International Good Turn

BSA Innovation Engine ·

1 Vote On Idea How about the BSA or the World Scout Association partnering with Rotary International on its Polio Plus project to eradicate polio in the world? Rotary has made great progress and is working to meet a challenge grant from the Gates Foundation.

End of the day...

Commissioner's Corner ·

It's 11:30, end of another great day...the boys really came together as a patrol, I am so lovin' this job! One downside...had an adult leader from another unit try to over-ride my authority of the boys...the boys were fine, he decided that it was his call to step in...needless to say, I don't think that…

This is totally a non Scouting post.. but it speaks volumes about Character. I got this in my inbox today and it asked to forward it and keep it going. Well... I hate doing that.. so I thought I would use my blog to fufill the promise of " Fowarding it".

The digital divide (opens in a new tab)

Bryan on Scouting / On Scouting · archived copy

Technology: You gotta love it. It allows Scouters to stay connected and helps the BSA reach new audiences in interesting ways. Most importantly, without technology this blog wouldn't exist. But when it comes to enjoying the outdoors, many packs, troops, and crews choose to limit or ban most high-tech items.

Scouting News ·

Twenty Enterprise Rent-A-Car employees turned out for a work day at Alpine Scout Camp on June 19th, where they spent the day painting the interior of the pool shower house, in preparation for hundreds of children this summer. The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation funded this and another project to take place with additional Enterprise volunteers on…

Website Errors should not be such a BIG DEAL

BSA Innovation Engine ·

0 Vote On Idea BSA must improve communication between departments! This is especially important with regards to volunteer/national office/website development communications. When massive website changes occur such as the change June 1st to user id's, more should have been done to notify volunteers beforehand to prevent the overwhelming number of helpdesk requests for login assistance.

Family Friends of Scouting

BSA Innovation Engine ·

-1 Vote On Idea To enhance the council's 2009 Family Friends of Scouting campaign we designed a family specific pledge form and envelope. The pledge form contained suggested giving amounts each connected to helping to support a Scout. Pledge forms were personalized for each family using the data from MyBSA fundraising.

Handbooks available electronically

BSA Innovation Engine ·

7 Vote On Idea With the increasing popularity of e-book readers such as Kindle, Sony, etc. we should make the purchase of an electronic version of our handbooks, merit badge pamphlets, etc. available in these formats. Many other devices such as the I-Phone can be used to read e-books.

Wow! The Davis Mountains are absolutely beautiful. I think my favorite view was when the early morning sun came creeping around the edges between peaks. Nothing Ventured... Nothing Gained

The Scoutmaster Minute ·

Nothing Ventured... Nothing Gained.. That is pretty much how the advancement program in Boy Scouts works. If you don't do the work..you don't get the rank. It's that simple. Unlike advancing in Cub Scouts where the Group works together to achieve, Boy Scouts is different in that it challenges the Scout to do the work…

Made in America

BSA Innovation Engine ·

23 Vote On Idea As millions of our countrymen lose their jobs to unfair labor practices overseas, it seems less than appropriate that our uniforms are made in China. If cost is an issue, maybe we could provide an American made product alongside the foreign product, and give everyone the option to "buy America".

Improve Reporting of Training & Advancement for District Volunteers

BSA Innovation Engine ·

4 Vote On Idea We really need to be able to give our volunteers report updates on a regular basis that we KNOW are accurate. The reports in MyBSA for Training are never accurate for everyone, and we don't have a report that shows what Advancement Chairs need.
