I've been offering Red Cross CPR and First Aid training to scout groups for the past four years. I figured it would be a good way to improve my skills and knowledge, make outings safer, and save the units some money since other people were charging a lot for the training.
If you are like me and kept putting off the day to buy the Boy Scout Uncirculated Silver Dollar, well, you are too late. According to coinnews.net : The 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial Uncirculated Silver Dollar sold out today, April 26, 2010, leaving only the proof option open for unrestricted ordering.
Update (4/27, 10:54 a.m.) : According to just-released sales figures from the Mint, only 19,398 coins remain (all proof). That's about 5.5 percent of the original 350,000-coin mintage. We warned you that the BSA Centennial coin could soon sell out, and that prediction has partially come true.
Somewhere I have a binder full of old troop newsletters that were our principal way of communicating for twenty years. Eventually, like most Troops, Packs and Crews, we set up a website and it became our principal means of communication.
Today I: Caught up all of the Scout accounts for the troop and the pack. Emailed each family with the total bill they owe for summer camp this year. Very painful with families where they have 3 or 4 Scouts in the program, and especially if Dad wants to come along.
Here are a couple of updates on the last two posts I've done. First of all, here is a message from Bear Grylls, the UK Chief Scout, about the recent increase in numbers of Scouts in the UK. Secondly, there is a report about the 350 new Queen's Scouts meeting Prince Charles and Bear Grylls…
Welcome back to the Scoutmaster Minute… In this show we get a peek around the camp table with Scoutmaster Jerry and the Assistant Scoutmasters plus a couple new Dads talking about Scouting and what they expect. Of course any good camp discussion would not be compete without a few good stories.
The Scoutmaster Minute Podcast Show 54 A listen in on Scoutmaster Jerry and his Assistant Scoutmasters as well as a few of the new Dads talking about what their expectations are in Scouting and of course.. no good camp discussion would be complete without a few great camp stories...
3 Vote On Idea Can a space be added to the Adult application for the membership number from unexpired certificate (presently on youth application). This would make it easier for youths that are applying as adults, adults that are taking on another position, or joining another unit. Comments (0) Other
0 Vote On Idea Please develop a CASS certification report that will have the option to list all addresses that are and are not cass certified. when entering new members a check box appears that shows if someones address is cass certified.
-1 Vote On Idea It has been suggested that the new forest green Boy Scout Uniform cap would be much more appealing if the universal symbol was more visable. How about a new color embroidery of the Boy Scout symbol on the uniform cap to make it more noticable as BSA apparel? Comments (0) Supply
Bookmark this great collection of merit badge resources
With 126 merit badges out there (including four for 2010 only ), Scouting offers something for every boy in your troop. But when a Scout comes up to you with dreams of Drafting or visions of Veterinary Medicine, how would you respond?

Video Game Belt Loop to mental fitness or addiction awareness
-7 Vote On Idea What if we discontinue the video game belt loop and replace it with an "addiction awareness" belt loop or "mental fitness" belt loop? Kids do play video games, but it is when it becomes an addiction that the problems begin.
Voluntold / vol-en-told/ adverb; Taking on a responsibility normally assumed voluntarily under some from of compulsion (typically a withering look from one's comrades). "Edward was voluntold to be the patrol cook."
Today I: Pulled together the list of awards needed for the pack meeting tonight. Went to the Scout store--still out of a lot of Academics and Sports belt loops and pins (primarily the new ones). Filled out the award cards--this always gives me a minute to remember each Scout and think about him for a…
How is your scouting unit celebrating the centennial? Are you including the scouts in the celebration? I think it'd be incredible to keep a board of 100 good deeds.
Anyone every notice how much driving is involved in Scouting? I keep an old 15 passenger van simply because it is the easiest way to move a lot of Scouts and their stuff. And it is paid for. But "The Beast" is getting old, and that will present a new slate of problems in the…
When we teach the Scouts about task organization and what right looks like, it is important to teach initiative. What I have seen and learned over the last few years is that most of our Scouts, or young men in general lack initiative.
April is almost over, and the arrival of May brings exiting new opportunities for the high-adventure-loving high-schoolers in your town. That's because new eligibility requirements for the Venturing program ensure that more boys and girls are able to enter the program with their peers.

0 Vote On Idea Right now we have "My scouting" for Tour Permits, Internet recharting and our council uses "Doubleknot" for camping registrations and email list. The council and the National council have different needs so we have different eystems, but leaders have just one need.
Download full-size version of timeline (link opens PDF) Keeping the Scouts in your unit safe is partly your responsibility, and that means much more than simply keeping a well-stocked first-aid kit nearby. It also requires you to know how to spot and prevent child abuse.
I almost wish I young enough to be a Boy Scout again. The merit badge I have been waiting for has finally arrived. Scouting Heritage is has been approved and is ready for Boy Scouts to begin earning. Since I am too old to earn it myself, I will be signing on as a merit…
Today I: Broadcasted the new Scouting Heritage merit badge information on Twitter, Facebook, via email to the troop, and other Scouters. Oh, asked the Scout store when we can expect the manuals. Reminded the crew about the new age and grade requirements for Venturing, effective Saturday.
4 Vote On Idea Why are all the slots for the Cub Scout Delivery Method Webinars during the workday? Many volunteers would be more able to participate if some were offered off-hours. Comments (0) Cub Scouting
6 Vote On Idea I was surprised to read the e-mail about changing the volunteer help desk number to a regular, long-distance number. Because local councils do not have access to MyBSA accounts, we cannot look up accounts or passwords in order to help them.
3 Vote On Idea For those who have completed the national youth leadership training. You have to take the patch off upon turning 18, and youth should be recognized for the training. Comments (0) Other

Today I: Had my Scouting derailed by a problem at work. Updated pack and troop accounts with summer camp deposits. That was about it. Sometimes work is the highest priority--and it allows me to keep Scouting a high priority the rest of my life. Work ever get in your way?
If a tree grows in your yard, does it make a sound? If you're talking about one of the Boy Scouts of America's Centennial Trees, the answer is yes. The sound it will make will resonate across the country. That's because all trees purchased through the Arbor Day Foundation and the BSA have a double…
